The Train goes to Roaring Camp in Felton, CA which is in the Redwoods. It's like a 1800's camp with a scenic Redwoods railroad, exhibits, special events and the train you saw that runs between the camp and Santa Cruz. It's actually a really cool experience.

I live five minutes from this place, been going since I was a kid, and over the years it's become one of those things that just kind of fades into the background because it's always been there, and it's always packed with tourists, but watching you guys walk around and marvel at the history and everything it has to offer really stirred my pride in this place, so thank you for making me smile, and thank you for visiting and appreciating our special spot. The Giant Dipper was the first coaster I ever rode, and she's a legend to this day :)

I use to go every memorial day weekend with my grandmother from 1967 to 1972, riding the greyhound bus form the San Francisco bay area to downtown Santa Cruz. We always stayed at an old 2-story hotel just a block away and straight up ocean street from the Merry-Go-Round. Every morning they would walk the track first to inspect it and then run the coaster trains empty for awhile to make sure it was OK before opening the ride. I saw many changes in just those 5 years. The first time I went they were just putting up the poles for the overhead tramway.
The bumper cars with the small steel track coaster on top is where the old funhouse was. That had a giant wooden slide and a huge rolling barrel you TRIED to walk through and much more. LOVED it as a child. By the time they tore it down I was out-growing it anyway. We already had a bumper cars attraction down near where the haunted castle is now, so for some years we had TWO bumper car attractions. I think the original was where that swinging FIREBALL ride sits now.
They also had a shooting gallery to the left of where the funhouse was but that was torn down some not long ago to expand room for some new rides. The current steel coaster up there (with the spinning cars) is the third steel coaster to sit there. The first was the JetStar. I can't recall what the second one was named. There once was a WILD MOUSE wooden coaster ride at the east end of the boardwalk that was really fun and scary. That was removed when they made the log flume ride in the late 1970s. A shame they could not save it. They also removed the Disneyland-like gas-powered "Autorama" cars in the late 1990s that I rode many times as a small lad in the 1960s. Many things have changed but some never do. At least the Cave Train survived all these decades.
That real diesel train you saw while crossing on the Skyway tram is on a very old rail line that takes you up to "Roaring Camp Railroad" up in the nearby Santa Cruz mountains. They have a vintage steam train up there that takes you on a beautiful looping ride deep into the California redwoods. Just beautiful. Google "Roaring Camp Railroad" for details.
By the way, today I live only 3 miles from the boardwalk. It's mid November right now and when I rode my bicycle over there a couple of days ago I saw that everything is closed and shut down but you can still walk around on the nearly empty boardwalk and access the beach. Very calming there when all is quiet except for the surf, the now-stilled Big Dipper coaster looming over your head. Such a wonderful place. Glad you got to enjoy it too.

What an amazing and beautiful theme park. I just love theme parks that provoke memories and happy days like this park. It’s so well designed and laid out. Love a good woody coaster. That Wipeout ride reminded me of The Black Hole ride at the now defunct and long closed American Adventure in Derbyshire. The dark rides here are some the best I’ve ever seen. TPW you must return here in the future it’s fabulous 👌

I got to visit the boardwalk once! Unfortunately I didn’t get to ride anything, but the atmosphere was so great I didn’t even mind! I’m definitely going back someday. When you guys go back in the future you should look into riding the train through the redwoods out to Roaring Camp in Felton. The beach train goes to the boardwalk and at Roaring Camp there’s a narrow gauge steam train up to the top of a mountain! It’s a great time! Back in the day you could take a train direct to the bay area from right outside the park. When my grandfather was a kid one of his best friends almost died jumping off the train bridge next to the park lol
