DIGITAL vs ANALOG Comparison (Bouncing to Tape)

  • Today I am at Fuzz City and we are finishing up the new song by Doris Melton - "Turn a Blind Eye" which we released yesterday as a teaser for her upcoming solo album that she is working on. Everything was recorded to the Tascam 388 except the vocals which were recorded digitally. We are going to be bouncing the final mix down to cassette tape to gel everything together and add texture to the final mix. Let me know what you prefer, the sharp clarity of the digital, or the warm texture of the analog tape?

    Could you make a video comparing the 1/4" tape of the 388 to the 1/8" tape of the cassette and highlight the differences? Great video man keep it up

      i’ll tell you right now.
      normally, 1/4 inch is better, but the 388 is 8 tracks on a 1/4 inch of tape.
      cassettes use 4 tracks of 1/8 inch tape.
      4 tracks 1/8inch and 8 tracks 1/4inch tape is the exact same fidelity. the only difference would be the noise reduction running at 7 1/2 ips rather than 3 3/4 ips.

    The tape is definitely an improvement and fills out the mix. Love the band too. Reminds me of Stereolab and some retro 60s instrumentation added. Will stream it.

    It depends on what the album, song, or even just an individual part needs to your taste. All digital can be amazingly clear and recorded perfectly and easily, but not every part should be completely clean if that's what the song needs, or doesn't need. That's what is so beautiful about music as an artform, it's gotten to where the technology needs to be, to where your inspiration takes you. I'm excited to see where your art goes.

    Hi Matthew, great video. I thought the analogue was definitely better by far. It was warmer and moreike I remember records used to sound back 8n the 1970's. I love your work. Kind regards. Paul.

    I like your comment on setting the record level on the cassette deck. At 6:19 you said "you can see here, I"m playing it real safe, I' m "CLOCKING IN" just below zero on the peak level meter" (as if it had a "clock" that you were using to sync the units together).

    Bought an old TEAC V350C deck to record some cassettes to give away as promotion. I soon learned that theirs a nice quality to the cassette sound. I have some more experimenting to do. My next one being I’ll use better preamps going into the cassette player.

    Matthew, in my youth when I read guitar magazines it was all about home demos, the Tascam portastudios had just come out. One idea they had was to master ( and bounce) onto a video tape recorder because a) sound quality - do you hear any hiss on a movie tape? b) They have a tape counter, therefore easy to access the track you want. c) some models have an insert index mode, so you can >> or

    Interesting! I much prefer the analog sound for this style of music in particular! Got me thinking; My mixes tend to lean on the bright side with not enough bass so I wonder if this approach would bring some balance. The difference is not subtle. There was a multi year gap between the time I recorded in the analog world (Tascam Portastudio 424) vs my entry into DAWs(GarageBand/Logic) so I never really carefully compared the 2 mediums. The stock compressor in Logic has a setting called "Platinum Analog Tape". I wonder how that compares. How lucky we all are to have all these options these days.

    Cassette definitely sounds better. The low end gets all tape compressy and the hiss is honestly where its at, I say.

    I'm being sincere here so don't take me wrong, but if you did this on a non-garbage cassette using a better tape deck, nothing extravagant, but a bit better than what you had there, you'd be amazed how much better it can sound. Well done cassettes can give you the best of both worlds...digital clarity, but with a hint of that vintage hi-fi tape sound. Kinda what draws people to vinyl tbh. Cheers, from 2024.

    I think the vocals actually sounded better digitally in this case. To me, the cassette sounded very midrange and the cymbals were almost non existent. I usually like analog better, but in this case, I think you're limited to the headroom on the cassette and the limitation of whatever cassette you were using (that may be the biggest variable). It's just my opinion, but that's what I hear. If you could blend or mix the two together, that may liven things up. Thanks for sharing. It still gets a like from me.

    • @justinbrown8214
      @justinbrown8214 2 роки тому

      I agree, the cymbals get lost completely on the cassette mix. I dig the lo-fi sound, but the original digital recording had plenty of grit for my taste.

  • @paulmessis1985
    @paulmessis1985 4 роки тому

    This is just my own opinion, I have used digital and tape throughout my own recordings and I have recently found I am enjoying Digital recording more and more and can get a very analog sound, just from using different mics and positioning them in non-conventional ways.... I think mics and positioning is more important than the recording gear at times. I have used Tascam 488 cassette, reel to reel and now am really digging using the Tascam DP-O3SD and I love it.
    Ultimately nothing will sound truly vintage cos the pressing plants are too scared to master the vinyl hot.

    The Analog version was louder so its unfair comparison. You need to get both the levels perfectly correct. (Using a VU meter) Also you obviously may not be aware of all the amazing digital plugins that are out there that can emulate tape to a very high degree. Not to mention analog preamps and stages etc..Tape is not necessary these days. I get where you are coming form for sure. I own 4 tape machines still but tend to use them for converting analog to digital for clients. Some of the tape plugins are amazing. You can set speeds from 1 7/8 to 30 ips and get the range of sounds that offers. You cannot do that with your Tascam for example. You can push the drive elements or hold them back etc. This is what is great though. You can put SOME of the tracks in your DAW only through the analog processes and others not and get a combination of analog and digital sounds. Tape is expensive in Australia now and hard to get as well. What used to cost $20 for a 10 1/2" reel is now $70 to $100. They are over charging because they can! If the music is really good enough the recording medium is really not that relevant.

    I liked your videos till I saw your fox TV interview where you defend horribly racist ideas. The things they're doing to people in those ICE detention centers is torture, and you and your wife seem happy about it. You're sick and you should probably see a therapist to try figure out why you're directing your self hatred toward others who are just coming to the US trying to make a better life for themselves.

    • @dreammachine432

      Hey Simon! Thank you for expressing your concern, however, neither myself nor my husband have ever said anything regarding ICE detention centers. Please do link to the article in which we were "racist". I myself have immigrated from war torn Bosnia to Holland (thanks for the bombings, Americans!) and then to this horrid and corrupt and political cesspool called the United States of America (🤢🤮) which I cannot wait to promptly leave thanks to people like you. I think I would know quite a bit more about immigration than you, a white American male, but since you seem very self righteous in your beliefs, why don't we set up a quick live stream debate so we can clear some things up? Let me know! Send me a message here or e-mail fuzzcityrecords@gmail.com and we'll set up a date! Also, please leave my husband out of the Fox news thing, as I was the one defending my stance on feminism. Give women a little credit for their own opinions, you sexist pig!
