In the novel, when Richard tells Murray to get Damien from the school, Murray's face goes hard. After Damien comes out of the museum, Murray opens the door and both Paul Buher & Sgt. Neff are also in there. Murray's expression earlier shows that he is one of Damien's followers, too.
What was also significant about the novel is that both Sgt Neff and Paul Buher carried the mark. Both had received the calling and were responsible for informing Damien about his destiny. When Damien saw the mark on his head, the same mark appeared, Neff on his forehead and Buher on the ring finger of his right hand.
