    4:58 *"magical without being flowery"*
I haven't read A Darker Shade Of Magic but I did read Victoria Schwab's Verity duology (This Savage Song and Our Dark Duet) and I have to agree with this.
She really does know how to make something sound magical yet not flowery. 🖤

I really love both ADSOM and AGOS and I'm really looking forward to ACOL. It's interesting you mention you really enjoyed her world building and magic system. I've watched multiple interviews with her where she talks about where she builds her worlds first and really emerges herself in them. She also says that she loves to make her magic systems as close to reality as possible because she loves to believe that magic is real and she just hasn't found it yet.

This is one of my favourite series ever! I love the worldbuilding, Red London is described so well that I feel like I've been there. It's just so magical. When I first read it, I was in the process moving out of my god-awful hometown and I think that really helped me connect to the story and to Lila. I can't wait to eat up the rest of V.E. Schwab's work.

I also read this book super fast and loved it so so much! I agree, her to the point and concise writing style helped me get every detail SO much faster and completely than other fantasy books I've read. I just started AGOS last night and I'm sooooo excited for ACOL!! I'm glad you loved this book too!

AH The thing you said about Nostalgia hits the mark so perfectly for me. I recently read this and I kept feeling like I was reading an heir of Alice in Wonderland or Neverwhere (Neil Gaiman), but not in a "this is so similar" way. It was like this book was pulling on those same strings, and I actually got super sentimental about it (I read it literally three days ago, so it was a bit odd). I've been trying to figure out a way to articulate how I felt about it, and you just saved me a lot of brain pain :P

Great review Hannah! I finished this book last month and I really enjoyed it! Tbh I expected a bit more but it was still a great read :) The thing I actually had some trouble with were the characters, especially Lila Bard, who I found a bit annoying at times because of her recklessness. I often was like, girl, this shit is serious, why are you acting this way?!?! Haha anyway I can't wait to read the next book because I'm very curious to know how this story will continue!

I think the thing about Victoria's writing is kind of the way that vanilla ice cream exists in a sundae--it's simple if only to draw attention away from the language and toward the plot which I found absolutely refreshing as I usually tend to enjoy stuff that's on the more Valente-esque side of things too. Loved this entire series!

I guess I have a very different idea to most people about what constitutes a fast-paced book. I thought this book was extremely fast-paced to the point of almost ignoring character development. Then book two decided to dial back the action to focus on the characters and how they were recovering from the events of book one. Then book three tied everything up with a healthy mix of both character development and action.

I bought the box set bc I started a project of good male protagonist in YA (mostly but it blossoms to any genre) and I was recommended this series by the same person who recommended me to other books like ‘Lock In’ and ‘The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue’ and The Summoner trilogy and bc she gave me a lot of recommendation, I was like “why not?” I started this book about 3 weeks ago and it was one of the reasons why I didn’t liked this book at the beginning bc of it’s slow pace and plus I don’t have the time to read books like I use to bc I work and I’ll buy an audiobook. Now that i gave it more chance to develop, I actually love the book (as much as I read) and I kinda live the format of how it is and I love the rules, the characters that they were developing for the plot and it was just a book that I don’t mind reading it again if I wanted to bc I’m someone who’s into action adventure , mystery, thriller/suspense with sci-fi or fantasy...fast pace kind of books, and once it started , I got completely hooked on the book and so yea...ready for book 2

I don't have time to physically read the book so I chose to audio book it. I am really liking the story and the characters the whole world in this book. I'm just not liking Lila's character. She's really getting on my nerves and is making it hard for me to enjoy this book. Maybe is just and the narrator's choice of voice for this character. Part of me just wants to have the story without her character in it. Is it just me? I wonder if I should just stop and wait until I have time to physically read the book. Maybe I like her character better with my own voice then with the narrator's voice.

I'm asking because I really liked the first half of Vicious, but I found the second half very generic and unfortunately it was a big let down for me because everyone loves that book. We usually have the same taste in book series so I'm very much willing to give it a try. :)

Quite late to the game, I read this book a couple of weeks ago and, despite the fact that I did like it, I honestly think it isn't as flawless as "the hype" wants it to be.
Yes, the writing is cool, and the worldbuilding too, but the only interesting character in this book is Kell. Lila gets a bit of deepness in the second book, but honestly, in the first one it's like she's there just to have somebody who doesn't know magic and stuff in the play. As for other characters, they're not really depicted at all, so I can't see how you felt them being real, but ok :)
Actually my only real critique with this book is more of a question. In which way is this book not a YA?

    • @Jujutear91
      @Jujutear91 7 років тому +6

Davidhook not sure either why this is adult instead of YA....there doesn't seem to anything very graphic or more violent then the Harry Potter books (and those are considered middle grade if I'm not mistaken). Maybe the publisher's wanted to be safe, but from what I'm not really sure.

DNF this book in Chapter 1. I was knocked out of immersion by such a glaring stupidity that it stunned me, for a minute and totally diverted me from any interest in this story. In chapter one, it is clearly stated that, 'In order to pass between these worlds, you must go through a door made with a symbol drawn in your own blood. The exact same symbol needs be on both sides of this door and both sides are essentially the exact same location in two parallel worlds.' So, in oder to go to World B from World A you have to already have been to world B and set up a door mark. ?!?!? So, HOW did this ever start??? How did anyone ever travel if you need to have been there in order to go there? >FACEPALM< If the author meant to say that the 'Best' way or the Easiest Way or the Preferred way... she didn't So my confidence in this author whom I had no prior experience with drops to Zero.
If you are the kind of person who doesn't notice such things or prefers to overlook them, enjoy! I just cant spend my time on such things.

Er, if you continue reading, this just happens to be one of the ways. The other way is that you travel within the same London in two places or you travel between two Londons in the same place. Example being The Thames (called by different names in all the Londons) flowing through the geography. Thames isn't used all that much, but yeah, it follows the similar idea. The magic is nuanced and you did mention you are particular about these minute things so yea, hope you find the book that suits your liking!

I am a Victorian Schwab fangirl after 3 books...but I really hope she puts people that aren't white and straight in her books....cuz I'm feelin' the guilt reading her.

cool beans, thank you. I have read The Archived, This Savage Song and Vicious and they are all so amazing and amongst my favorite books. I want to marathon this series as soon as my copy of the 3rd book gets here.

Personally I don't care about the sexuality or ethnicity of the characters. (Unless it's important to the story.) I just want to read a good story with likeable characters.

Ioa Zam really? I mean our dark duet has non binary and gay characters while a darker shade has two highly important characters that aren’t straight, and I believe Rhy and his family to be people of colour. But hey I wouldn’t complain to see more diversity. Although I really don’t want forced diversity either.

I really wanted to like this book but i just wanted lila to die. She is a horrible character, like seriously, Kell's interactions with her are so eyeroll worthy. 🙄🙄🙄
