Good try, might want to get one of those motorcycles helmet. 25mph on that terrain is impressive! Do you feel you have a massive advantage using the remote vs no remote on that race?
Definitely an advantage! The extra control is a game changer and really helps with maintaining speed through whoops, rollers, and table tops by allowing you to get the nose up without braking and really pushing up uphills. Honestly, I see more of a need to separate Remote vs. No Remote into its own classes, rather than FM vs. VESC classes. But when a race calls for any board goes, you gotta bring the right tool for the job 🛠
Amazing vid. Dusting people in the start, losing the board at the end, it was all sick. Just wondering, what helmet do you use? Looking to get a full face as my racing game levels up.
Fox ProFrame! Couldn't recommend it enough, it actually big time saved me here as the last bail was a pretty serious faceplant, worse than the video makes it look haha. But it never gets in the way and I never really notice it while riding, it's awesome. Other good options are also the TLD Stage and the IXS Trigger. I'd recommend going to a shop that holds these helmets and trying them on yourself, the best helmet is gonna be one that fits you best 👌
You are great Nico, I know this may sound weird but would you like to take up Onewheel GT again. I know VESC got so many potential but it seems like safety vice OW might take an edge? Sorry about the eye I wish you a speedy recovery.
Thanks man! Luckily no crazy slams, continued riding that day and every day since, that's just racing 🤙 I have zero interest in taking up GT again haha, I consider it at least for me significantly less safe. My bails here weren't due to anything VESC related, they were related to my own endurance, skill, leg strength, and the fact that we are racing on trails at 20+mph. The way GT handles trails, especially for a lighter rider like me, is the exact reason I went to VESC in the first place and dedicated my year to pushing VESC to be the viable alternative it is today. I am WAY more comfortable, faster, and feel way safer on the XR platform than on GT, not to mention I have way more fun on it. How my board is safer than GT's for racing: 1. Much more stable due to thinner rails/lower platform (plus I personally find the GT footpads tippy feeling) 2. Way more shock absorbent not only due to the 6" XR rim allowing more sidewall than the 6.5" GT rim, but also the option for extended rails allowing me to run a bigger and softer tire that has an even BIGGER sidewall for suspension. 3. I can tune it to be as predictable as I need it to be on trail, one of the biggest things being having no pushback at 20mph. Pro's know the limits of the board already and don't need pushback to know this, but pushback can result in some nasty tail drags when it comes at the wrong time. But in general, I can properly tune it for trail racing, rather than the one-size-fits-all stock tunes on the GT. 4. I'm personally using Remote Tilt, allowing me to adjust my board's angle in realtime. This allows me to run a lowered setup that maximizes stability in exchange for clearance, and then deal with that clearance by carefully adjusting my board's angle as needed to avoid taildrags or nose scrapes. With a GT on these trails, tail drags are inevitable at these speeds and can be real sketchy to deal with sometimes. 5. While I personally don't use them, there's tons of ways to add alerts with VESC that are WAY more accurate at warning riders than the pushback on Onewheels. Pushback kicks in at a set speed (around 19.5mph for GT), and isn't dynamic to the board's power headroom. With VESC, you can base alerts around Duty Cycle, which is basically the motor load, and have pushback kick in when you have let's say 15% power headroom left. Or you can use a buzzer and have that go off, or set up audio alerts on your phone! And its dynamic to your board's actual power headroom, so you can trust it and use that knowledge to be a better informed rider and ride accordingly. There's way more to this board than pure speed, especially when it comes to trail racing. We're obviously not hitting 30+mph out on the single track trails, at least not yet, so that's not really the issue for safety. It's about actually handling the trails at the speeds we do hit them of 15-25mph and keeping the board connected and under our feet, staying in control. And I have never felt more comfortable, confident, and dialed in than on the setup I'm running currently, in ways that I could never accomplish with a GT just due to the nature of the platform its built on, between the thick rails, weird (to me) concave footpads, thinner tire sidewalls and limited tire options, and more.
Pretty similar to a CBXR! With how light I am, I can get 20-25 trail miles out of it, bit less if I'm really pushing it. On street, probably 40-50 miles or so, but I'm on trail 99% of my riding haha

These videos keep proving to me that VESC is for those who live and breath onewheel, Not everyone… At this point I expect a VESC to absolutely blow a normal GT out of the water but as you can see, was it really worth all the hours “beasting” up the board… I’m not seeing it. GT is still eating the trails. VESC does a few things right tho. People want more speed but then bash Onewheel (future motion) for being unsafe 😂 This dude about to actually achieve his goal someday of blowing a normal GT out of the water and then he’ll be sitting in a wheelchair… What a story. (I’m waiting for the reply that it’s not about speed)
TL;DR: It's not about speed 😉 VESC is absolutely for the enthusiast, not the average person, I think most people agree with that. Was it worth it? Hell yes! I got into VESC because I just couldn't enjoy the GT and how it rode, especially with how light I am and the struggles I already have keeping control over the board. The GT just pushed that over the line; I couldn't maneuver it like I wanted, was bailing way more often, and just not having the same fun as I did on XR. So I went VESC to allow me to keep riding the board I fell in love with (XR frame), but with the power needed to push things the same way GT's can and beyond. And now I'm having some of the most fun I've ever had riding, hard to argue against that. I think you're taking things at face value a bit too much and assuming everything revolves around the boards here. Racing on trails is still majority rider-dependent regardless of the board, especially when it comes to an endurance race like this where endurance and fatigue become major factors. After my first bail (failed to see lip in ground that bonks you), combined with my legs already being worn out, it became tough to push the board like I wanted while maintaining stability, so I dialed it back a bit in order to stay on the board, and that's the first time you see people pulling away from me on the trails. That has nothing to do with the board, that's all the rider. My main point being, my goal isn't to blow a GT out of the water. Hell, even if it was, I honestly think I've proved that with the performance in this race despite the unfortunate bails, as well as with placing 5th overall out of nearly 200 riders for the main 7-Stage Enduro Race that weekend, a race that had nearly every single top rider in the world in attendance. But all I personally care about is being able to push the board sport and continue the opportunity to ride on the board that I love, that I feel the most comfortable and safe on, and that I have the most fun on. And I'm doing it! I couldn't be more stoked about where things are at, and I know tons of pro riders are stoked to see what's going on with the VESC side of things even if they're still riding GT. Things aren't quite as conflicting or antagonistic as you might think, I'm just out here doing what I love and having an absolute blast doing it man 🤙
@@nicoaleman I couldn’t quite understand how the board is safer tho. What safety features does it have that Onewheel doesn’t? I was gonna say general safety considerations and reliability, but damn, I've seen too many GT's fail before my eyes in the last few months to give them that 😅 But either way, FM has a place and the GT has a place. I just hope they're able to look at what we're doing and take notes to make their own product better so everybody can have an overall safer and more enjoyable ride.

Get some prizes going and people would probably really tune in to see some extremely exciting (but also kinda deadly…) races. Nobody’s accountable. Anyway, you know what you’re doing 👍🏽
@DeZ H Appreciate it man. Long term, I'm hoping we see more open races over the years that allow for pushing the sport like that! It's definitely out of my organizational skills hahaha, but I'm just gonna keep doing what I love and pushing the sport however I can 🤙 At the end of the day, I just want to make sure people have the opportunity to ride the board that they're most comfortable on, feel the most safe on, and have the most fun on. That's what it's all about for me 👌
