Thank you so much for making videos for grown ups!! Please continue to make videos explaining and deconstructing the emerging evolution of single-wheel skates 🙏 for those of us who want to jump onto the joyride of these amazing devices in a well informed way. Thank you!!!
This is a great video! Loved hearing it all put together like that, sort of a state-of-the-industry (or community) to help sort things out. Nicely done.
As I age I start looking at faster PEVs as dangerous. Not sure when this happened but wow I'm getting old. Great video breaking down some info I hadn't known about. Looking forward to how the floatwheel handles everything.
Having started with the original FunWheel kit, I still call mine a FunWheel even thou almost none of the parts are the same. Once I got it tuned and running I got out of the loop for a while, happy to just be riding. Got back into it with a new iteration of my build using an XR hub only to discover things have progressed so far beyond where I left off.
VERY awesome video. I've been watching a ton of vids trying to find the information and reviews and everything that you've summed up in ONE video. Thanks!
I had a diy VEsc one wheel. It had a 12s battery and a 1200w motor. The problem was that I’m 6’4 220 and way beyond the 175lb rider max. It wasn’t a problem until the speed controller started misinterpreting braking and the damn board would make me faceplant on even the slightest hill. Decided I wanted a board that would “just work” and bought a GT. Are they worth $2500? Not really. Has this board ever failed me in more than a year of riding? Nope.
Nice view of it all! Still think the work you do is so OCD I love it, some of the battery your builds are works of art, so wish we could get this in the UK.
Enjoyed hearing your thoughts. Big question for me is 'whats next' in the single wheeled board story. Vesc has certainly opened up the field for some interesting development.
im enjoying finding this channel.. i have yet to purchase a fat tire one wheeled PEV... ive ridden a onewheel pint enough to know that I do want one.. and its nice to see a channel thats not just about how they can ride railings or curbs or such.. because really I have zero interest in tricks.. OK riding curbs.. thats a useful skill ill want to learn.. but my interest is in a PEV for well tooling around in towns and cities when I just dont feel like walking that day.. im glad there is innovation in the industry I also like how there is DIY.. after all being a software and hardware engineer.. building my own stuff or at least modding things is really in my blood..
Thanks for the video. Great insight into the different boards. As an older rider and someone who still enjoys his OneWheel XR+ I've only recently started hearing about (and looking at) these other boards just to see if they might be of interest to me. I've got a few mods/upgrades on my OneWheel XR+ which make it a great board for me personally. Though, would love to hear your thoughts on the new OneWheel GT S-Series board (launched 10-27-2023) vs lets say the FloatWheel board which I'm hearing some great things about lately. Would love to see Future Motion upgrade their OneWheel App to include some of the data we're seeing in these other boards (just seems like a no-brainer to me but doesn't seem like Future Motion wants to give riders more data in their app). Anyway...great video!
VESC is the future. It’s used in everything from e-bikes to to skateboards and I’m sure it’ll eventually be used in e-foils too. Just a matter of time.
I would rather floatwheel success brings other companies up to the plate selling onewheel competitors at various price points,, and who cares what happens to FM at that point. I know not likely but one can hope..
I've been struggling with this name especially having my Floatwheel on the way. This is the best suggestion I've seen (outside of just stealing OW from FM the way Q-tips and Jello were from their owners). The only concern I have with Electric Balance Board is that it also is applied to those toy hoverboards. But I don't think anyone really gets that confused.
Mario great video! Having many PEV's such as eskate, and EUCs I am interested in the vesc based platform but I am not sure that the build quality of FW is there yet to drop $ in that direction since there is a lot if issues that I have heard on FB and the discord. I am about to purchase the FW but think might be premature at this point, what's your take since you have rode OW for a while? Or... Should one just build a vesc like you did out of the XR platform?
I believe I overcharged the battery on my vesc with little focer. Power light is still coming on but boards not activating. Voltage not reading in app. Just duty cycle fluctuating in app boards still communicating, if that helps. Just trying to correct this error if possible. Thanks in advance
Hey I just saw you built a DIY Board using a Focbox Unity. Thought I ask you if you've ever experienced this issue. I also built a DIY Board with that VES C and loved riding it all summer (last year). One day though the Unity just turned off for no reason while cruising. Pushing the power button will only work briefly/momentarily. And although it will stay on after a while of pressing the button, the board will only run for a while before shutting off again. Any feedback work be appreciated. Thanks
Hard to say. I would try reflashing the firmware, or updating to main branch VESC FW (start with 5.03, and then flash to 6.02), and see if that fixes any of those issues. If it doesn’t, the Unity may be damaged. In that case, I’m aware of one or two people who repair VESCs, so it’d be possible to have it fixed. Barring that, if there’s no way to fix your issue, you can replace the Unity with something like the new Maker-X DV4S, which is smaller than the Unity and has comparable/better specs. And Maker-X is a good vendor so far it seems. Best of luck.
Just like any plastic food storage is referred to as tupperware, a sealable bag of any brand is zip-loc, etc, etc....a single wheeled board will be referred to as a one wheel. Future motion can't sue the public for calling it a familiar name depite who makes it. Competition is good for everyone and pushes innovation and value.
Fun Wheel? DIY is it the largest wheeled/ most powerful Vesc/fun wheel/electric adventure vehicle thats currently available? best offroad and up hills.
@@sandorszabolcsi who's the governing body on such things? There are EUC's that you can't sit down on but they're still EUC's my point remains stance doesn't make it a new technology.
"tribalistic nature"... I'd noticed it, but never really found a great way to put it. Well said. Also, welcome back. It'll be interesting to see what the community eventually settles into with the nomenclature of the boards as diversity actually becomes realized. FOr now, I'm basically just putting a little "v" in front, as most of the VESC-based builds are using former FM parts, so the XR+ becomes the vXR, but really, even that doesn't work very well, considering how heavily modified many of those are, with different rails, footpads, bumpers, tires, and even batteries. It might be best to go fully generic, like SBES (Self-Balancing Electric Skateboard). I dunno. Hey, have you seen the Dragonfly "hyperscooter"? I know scooters aren't really your bailiwick, but there's a lot of skateboard in that design. I was wondering what you thought. Been thinking about getting one for my daughter (she's 22 next week). Lastly, I hear ya when it comes to the cooling of opinions on stuff that I once held most vehement. This month, I not only turned 50 but also had my sixth surgery to remove some sort of cancer or tumor, so my perspective has mellowed, a lot, as I'm taking a larger focus on health and figuring out how much time I can spend with my grandkids and remain employed.
The new term is Float Wheel. And this wouldn't even be an issue if FM hadn't discontinued the XR. The GT isn't the same, it's lower quality, and considerably more dangerous.
If you go on the Onewheel VESC Builders Facebook group, there are shops there doing custom commissions and things like that at a variety of price points depending on the parts they use. Some builds are entirely comprised of custom and aftermarket parts, some are rebuilds and refurbishings of formerly nonfunctional XRs and Pluses that avoided being thrown away.
There are many threads in the esk8news forum that show that this isn’t really as cut and dry as you’re saying. I have no interest in getting copyright or trademark strikes from Trampa (as one of my colleagues has), and so that’s where I’m leaving it.
I don't have cash ATM so my point may be moot, however I'm super stoked for the floatwheel. I like the gts and if it was same price i would have a little issue. But Fm is so greedy and overpriced. Is there a way for me to vesc My GT because it is set up with rails and smaller hub and awesome tire with fins. That would definitely suze me for the next year. Until I can afford a float wheel. Stay riding
Am I the only one that refuses to ride on anything but trails and MTB tracks because pavement for me is so umrewarding compared to the trade off of eating shit on concrete. Done both alot... lol prefer the dirt.....
Building a DIY electric skateboard is a complex and fairly dangerous thing for most people, and making one that won’t put the rider in the hospital, or burn their house down, is not as simple as replacing a faucet. As for what I did, the point of the video was pretty clearly expressed in the description. Thank you for watching.
