I’m on my city boy/japanese americana era and i’m so glad you’re covering it so much on youtube and tik tok, not enough people make practical content about pursing this style!
I really like how you show actual photos/fits as examples. There are content creators who just talk and hold up maybe one item the entire video, but this is so helpful for inspo - thanks!
I have basically let Popeye magazine dress me for the last 10 years and when you showed that colour palette, I laughed so hard. Because that's my whole wardrobe.
This is the style I've been slowly working towards for around 2 years now. I'm poor as hell and have been able to fill out my wardrobe pretty nicely almost exclusively at the thrift. Lots of wide-legged, pleated grandpa slacks and loafers. Vintage golfing knits also fit well here, you can find them in cream, beige or tan with great details.
One important thing about shoes in Japan. You are frequently taking them on and off during the course of a day - not just before you enter a home. Examples are: going to a bathroom in a restaurant (toilet slippers), going into a changing room in a clothes shop, eating in a restaurant where there is floor seating, only clean indoor shoes in a gym or school. Because of this, certain shoes are really popular because they are taken on and off really easily. New Balance is one because they keep their shape but are soft. Converse is another because they are low. These are shoes you can just slip off and back on again with no effort. Once you’ve bent down to lace and unlace your heavy boots a few times too many, you start to change your tune on just wearing the trusty new balance 😂
My kid is in a place where they're finding their own personal style and they're really drawn to this style cause its not too jean forward. So this'll be fun to help them find inspiration. This video is very helpful. 🖤
I’ve been dressing like this for the past couple of years but I literally never knew what to call how I dress 😭 comfortable, casual, but fashionable? Idk but this video describes my style to a T, so I wanted to put in my two senses for some recs . If your looking for pants I found this brand NLT( no less than) has really good pants called the long denim lantern pants that I have worn EVERYDAY since I got them(about a year and half ago) I have two back up pairs they are amazing. Xxl button ups from target and check the sleepwear too I’ve had luck finding really boxy button ups that are technically sleepwear but no one would know unless you told them😭
I was going to say oversized plaid shirts, cargo pants, and pullover sweaters have been staples in my “cityboy” wardrobe rotation. When I mix in a blazer or bomber jacket it kind of gives more of “Black Ivy”/academic feel to my outfits. I’m also kind of surprised that oxford and/or derby shoes didn’t make it on the list; I think when it comes to the city boy aesthetic those styles of footwear to lend themselves well.
Living in Japan, one thing that blew my mind was the old road worker’s pants! They are wide, have a light workwear vibe and the fabrics are SOLID! It was for sure something that brought me to look more into Japanese City boy style!
I would also say that in the winter/rainy season a technical rain jacket is a key City Boy item. You can go the Goldwin, North Face Purple Label route for expensive stuff but Uniqlo generally puts out a few good quality jackets that are similar. I also see a lot of vintage Hilfiger, North Face, etc rain jackets
i’ve been using my trader joe’s canvas tote for years! it’s really sturdy, has good structure, and super east to do repairs on. totally recommend it if you want a cheaper alternative to the boat & tote
One of the best style guide on Japanese Americana style I've found. Cheers to you and I'll give it a go as my working attire! Sending props from Thailand! 🔥
Watching this dressed in striped t-shirt and reworked vintage military pants, not to mention chore coat I had on earlier in the day… am I unconciously being a city boy my whole life?
Hi Percia! Would be nice if you could go more descriptive about shape and cut of the clothes you are showing. Because I don't have access to buying online from where I live but I would like to identify what shapes and styles I should be looking for when I try to buy for this kind of look. Thank you for your videos ❤
"as a community, we aren't really wearing new balances anymore". Meanwhile, New Balance might be at it's popular right now in the "American streetwear" community right now. especially with all the collabs with "urban" artists and designers like Salehe, Action Bronson, Kith, and Teddy Santis.
I think we still are but the ones that are rarely seen. I have about 2 pairs left in my collection , I always get compliments on them but I do rarely wear them and they are getting too much hype. Or the proper way to say it, they are at there peak which is great for brand exposure and comfort . I think the new balance that is being worn forsure is a huge difference, the 991 classic colorways which are overly expensive versus the 553 that are burnt out now
Thank you so much . I was looking for the outfit that only for my casio watch suits haha... and this concept City Boy is perfect! looks so comfy as well.
Your last video had me coming back for this one! I’ve been reinventing my wardrobe as sustainable, handmade, lasting, and heritage as possible and I have just about everything I need. Now it’s time to branch out the silhouettes while staying with that ethos
I unconsciously have city boy staples in my wardrobe lol. I have: 1 short sleeve stripped top from Pimkie (white and red) 1 pair of vintage cropped Lee mom jeans with square pockets (off white) 1 pair of leather loafers made in Spain (black with gold accents) 1 Mafalda tote bag from pull&bear (off white) 1 paisley bandana necklace from Stradivarius (black and white) 1 denim chore jacket from GAP (faded navy) 1 Zara stripped oversized long sleeve shirt from my mom's closet haha (blue and white) I'm petite and a bit plump, I wonder if this style is for my body type, I'm willing to try it. Sorry If I sound a bit robotic, I'm learning English.
Loving your recent videos on Japanese fashion. I've been digging this style after my trip to Japan and leaving impressed on how immaculately dressed people were. And they seem to have the most wide-ranging set of styles, like minimal is another I gravitate towards a lot aside from americana, but even avant-garde is something you'll casually see in Tokyo. Even in London, where I'm at, that would be a bit more difficult to pull off without some stares.
I came across city boy style on my recommendation tab (Pinterest) and no other style has ever made more sense in my life than this. Been following Popeye's, Cluel, Fudge and Mina magazine for inspiration (some have more of a feminine vibe) and honestly, as a tomboy nothing has ever felt more right and on par with how I wanted to dress.
It's so interesting to hear about these style staples from someone coming at these pieces with different associations. As someone from the American South, some of these pieces feel unbearably frat-bro to me, while others, due to my own personal style and background, feel like such automatic parts of my wardrobe that I'd never even thought about them as *choices* (I have ALL of my father's oversized dress shirts, for example).
I love loafers, and can understand why people don't find them comfortable. The break-in period for them takes a while before it feel enjoyable to wear, especially in places where walking in prevalent. Brands I'd recommend are weejuns(gh bass) or even the brand that did the collab with sperry's that you mentioned, blackstock and weber. Weejuns are much more affordable, but blackstock provides a lot more variety in style. Go for the lug soles for the all-weather purpose. Be careful with sizing of course. Most brands I've bought from, you need to buy a size down so just look for the sizing guides. The ones I mentioned, a full size down gets the job done!
Thanks for doing this vid! I've always liked this look but on a female so I could never really figure how to cultivate the style but u have articulated it so clearly. I was so limited with wording that I tried to just search Japanese female fashion which has a really broad brush. Also cheers on the aspirational brands!
I wanted to learn about the city boy style and you spent the whole video just describing my wardrobe. Even the Yuichi Toyama glasses. Job done. I guess city boy ametora is my style.
Hello from Tokyo 👍 Picked up two pairs of Karhu sneakers a couple weeks ago and I love them! And I happen to be wearing my Orcival shirt as I'm watching this video 😆
blue and white striped button downs vans old skools / authentics baseball shirts / collegiate sports gear native american jewelry high socks approach/hiking shoes denim jackets anoraks some ideas i had while watching
Love your channel, and I really relate to your way of seeing clothes. I enjoy feeling like a comic book characters when I dress up. And as a French person, "Petit bateau" is a superb brand for quality basics with a very nice fit.
as an american I am curious as to how buying secondhand can ostensibly support workers in japan. however, i also paused at the statement of one having a god-mother in paris and might be confused about online fashion culture in general.. as a fan of a lot of japanese brands i am very grateful for overall qc and attention to detail
About loafers I almost exclusively wear true heritage style welted footwear. I’ve never worn anything more comfortable than any of the boots or shoes I’ve had made for me. I think the difference is not everyone has the same feet. My feet are shaped differently than some so I have shoes made to measure after a lot of discussion with the maker to make sure the last fits my feet. Sneakers are soft and blobby and for almost everyone. Also I need that firm support and arch contour. Most sneakers are too soft and flat and it tires my feet out. If you do a look book I think I’d obsess over it
i love the photos where it’s the model wearing some joggers with socks tucked into the joggers with some new balances or running shoes then an oxford shirt tucked in to the joggers then a jacket over that then also a sweater over the shoulders and also a baseball cap. sounds awful but they always look so amazing. uniquely popeye to me
i really like the look of those Todd Snyder japanese selvedge chinos you mentioned! I first came across them like 6 months ago but unfortunately they don't make any in my waist size
the LMSM chore coats have had my attention for a while now I've just been scared to pull the trigger for some reason. (The seasonal "Viseu" blue patchwork jacket in particular is insane)
for glasses i literally get all of mine by searching brands that i like the design of on ebay, vinted etcc and buying them second hand. I just replace the lenses either with my prescription or plain lenses if i wanna wear my contacts with it. Got some dior and fendi frames that i really love by doing this and paid max 15 euro for each :) still gotta pay for the lenses on top but way cheaper in comparison to buying new. just a little tip for my fellow blind people
omg when you've been wearing this aesthetic for years and only today I learn it's a city boy aesthetic 😭😭🤭 I feel so proud of myself haha! one that bcos i really don't follow trends and wear whatever I feel comfortable and nice on me. I didn't even look at any Pinterest board that has this aesthetic to be influenced?? like wow I'm so lucky I guess. those colour palettes too are the ones in my wardrobe 😮 shoes also!! city boy is very very niche I think. even when I search on youtube, all I get are BL drama scene 💀

When the world (of city boys) needed this most, Percia came to their aid💌
Hi from Japan! I was surprised at your knowledge about Tokyo style. Great video.
Finally someone who has unique style. Enjoy your videos. To be honest a bit tired of grey and beige basic wardrobes.
how is this unique lol
It’s unique because compared to other people nowadays, not most people have this style. You just mostly see tiktok fits.
@@Ant1quedoll Unless you're in Japan, where every other person is wearing this style
This is the style I've been slowly working towards for around 2 years now. I'm poor as hell and have been able to fill out my wardrobe pretty nicely almost exclusively at the thrift. Lots of wide-legged, pleated grandpa slacks and loafers. Vintage golfing knits also fit well here, you can find them in cream, beige or tan with great details.
absolutely all of this can be thrifted 100%
So happy to have found your channel! This fashion geekery is what the world needs. (I am a former menswear designer and a design professor)

Yes THIS! Certain shoe types are a no no in Japan 😂 I remember my friend came and was having to awkwardly unlace his converses all over the place.

City boy style has intrigued me for a while so it was about time UA-cam suggested me a video on how to dress in this style, great video! Subscribed
augh thanks for the guide i've always wanted to dress like this since i was a teenager, i just didn't know what kind of clothes to get.

Omg. I rarely comment. So happy that your other video got a part 2. 😊🙏
I unconsciously have city boy staples in my wardrobe lol.
I have:
1 short sleeve stripped top from Pimkie (white and red)
1 pair of vintage cropped Lee mom jeans with square pockets (off white)
1 pair of leather loafers made in Spain (black with gold accents)
1 Mafalda tote bag from pull&bear (off white)
1 paisley bandana necklace from Stradivarius (black and white)
1 denim chore jacket from GAP (faded navy)
1 Zara stripped oversized long sleeve shirt from my mom's closet haha (blue and white)
I'm petite and a bit plump, I wonder if this style is for my body type, I'm willing to try it.
Sorry If I sound a bit robotic, I'm learning English.
For tote bags I would recommend bleu de chauffe, I have their canvas with leather version and it’s handles are excellent
Search for baker pants too aside from military or cargo. For the NBs the 990 series is a staple for cityboy style.
