    You are my favorite fashion UA-camr at this point and I have many, many followed. This is THE philosophy, and the way you approach it is so casually and pedestrian in the best way.

  • @gustaveii
    @gustaveii 2 місяці тому +17

    This may be my favorite of your videos.
    For me, the foundation is trusting that whatever you have on hand is something that already navigated a gauntlet to get its spot in your closet. You needn't second guess yourself when composing the outfits because the building blocks are all solid. It frees me up to trust my judgment in the moment.
    Re: the unexpected element, it isn't too much work to take a familiar outfit and add/swap one thing that has never been worn with it before. You can get a lot of the striped bag sorts of results. It is almost never bad, but maybe 1 out of 10 times you stumble onto something charming enough that you feel like you are really onto something.

    I love talking about the philosophy of daily fashion like this... and I'm so guilty of it, which makes me feel like I have three outfits total, when I have a closet full of clothes!! I'm on a fashion discovery journey in general, but that requires some purchases; however, I can implement these ideas right away! (btw that Taylor Russell pic has been ON MY MINDDDDDD)

    You make a great point about blokette-core and why I'm not a huge fan of Pinterest/Depop/UK thrift girl fashion. Everything is juxtaposition, which removes the element of surprise. Just as throwing together a cohesive look isn't reflective of the whirlwinds of daily life, stringing together a bunch of random pieces isn't practical because most people still like the predictability of a base silhouette you can alter with shape, color, texture, and juxtaposition.

    The part where you talk about how everything going together brings you comfort because you feel a sense of control is so relatable. I think I get stuck sometimes with my outfits because I want something fun and creative, but I have these arbitrary and rigid rules about how to properly dress. It's kinda silly. I think letting go and allowing yourself to choose things outside of those rigid rules, whether for the sake of practically or creativity, although it's scary at first, it's ultimately freeing.

    This is an incredible video. As a person who has recently become so invested in fashion, in trying to be "intentional" in everyday wear, I find myself being so anxious everyday, trying to stick within that "rigid style"mentality and trying to stay pure to a particular style (or be intentional with the surprises). I constantly wake up and think, oh if I have this item, which is in this style, what color should the other items be or what vibe am I trying to emulate, and before long I am spending like an hour to get ready, and then I basically reach for whatever feels comfortable instinctively. I love your conclusion in the end which is to treat your closet as an entire unit...very well made video!

  • @jaylovesqc
    @jaylovesqc 2 місяці тому +2

    your video and some of the comments below are totally striking a chord for me. i've been spending a lot of time second guessing my outfits and it really takes the fun out of the whole experience. i think it really boils down to self-acceptance/love: if i like the way i look, does it really matter if a certain piece doesn't look quite right with the rest of the outfit? if i can look in the mirror and go, hm i like this guy, does it matter if i fit in?
    fashion can be a delicate thing behind which we hide ourselves, quite literally

  • @user14210
    @user14210 2 місяці тому +1

    I couldn't agree with you more. I really enjoy discussing current topics in fashion because I feel they’re closely tied to underconsumption and the backlash against fast fashion. I had a similar experience of 'let loose' when I was an exchange student in another country. With a limited wardrobe and the cold weather, my daily outfits were quite unusual and not my typical clothing choices, but I realized they still worked and felt just right.
    Sometimes it feels like fashion trends and some haul videos make me believe that clothes should take over my life if I want to style them 'right'. But at the end of the day, clothes are meant to be functional, something we utilize, and that purpose often gets overlooked when we focus solely on styling. Because of this I think we don’t need to treat every item of clothing as a symbol of a specific style-something fashion trends or certain 'style' often make us believe.

    Thank you for putting this into words! I've been thinking a lot about ease of dressing while still wanting to feel like I'm wearing something expressive recently, and I think this is the key. I don't want to have a lot of pieces that seamlessly fit together in a perfectly co-ordinated wardrobe, I want to be able to grab a combination of whatever feels fun and practical for the day I'm having. My favourite outfits are always slightly mismatched, but always practical.

    Thank you for the video, it's the most inspiring and thought-provoking one I have seen in the last few months, at least to me personally!
    I know how to create those elements of surprise and often employ them in my personal or commercial styling works but struggle to use them for myself. I drift between vintage-boho-hippie and all-black-goth-industrial without really mixing them together, mainly because they reflect changes in my general mood. Therefore, I struggle with my Instagram page, as it needs to be more consistent and cohesive. However, my few most beloved outfits indeed mix my goth and hippie vibes - and thanks to you I will challenge myself to move in that direction.

    Hey🎉so love listening to you think this through..but yes the idea of grabbing the bag and coat etc is kinda how we dressed before social media. It's how many people still dress and the styling becomes a thread that runs through a group of outfits. I've tried for the last year to really consider all the elements in an outfit..and it's exhausting 😂 for sure Amy Smilovic is a queen 👑. Her take on fashion is so interesting and I love how as a queen of industry she is so free with her experience. Keep on keeping on and exploring 🌟🐨🌿

    I love your videos! Your one cooking show metaphor reminded me of how wine and Sake are evaluated differently, wine additively (e.g. color, notes are a plus) and Sake subtractively (discoloration, bitterness, etc are a minus). I also think your ability to form cohesive fits with ease comes from your great closet creation, I really admire this ability and I'm glad we're able to take a peek into your process (esp with some of your other vids)!

    Percia, I've been thinking about the bifurcated closet issue for so long. Coming from Asian households, you have your outside clothes, and then you have your inside clothes that you change into right when you get back home. This causes SO MUCH EXCESS. Of course don't use your contaminated outside clothes inside bc that's gross (ie: shoes in house), but that doesn't mean you can't use a clean pair of trousers or your favorite button front just to lounge around in before using it outside that day.
    I also play golf, and to me, there is so sense to have golf clothes ONLY FOR GOLF if you already have nice polos, pants, hiking shoes, whatever to go play on a public course with.
    There is so much more intersectionality to the things we own than we think, and it's so hard to practice getting out of that mindset. Like, of course we should treat our clothes with care, but if they're just sitting there on a hanger, what's the point to them??

    Interesting, I had the 'do less' thought I while ago in interior 'design', realizing that design is in a way staging life. Especially in magazines, there's always shoes standing somewhere as if someone just took m off etc. Now that I have stopped curating so much and just lettings things find their own order, I'm seeing that exactly that is the personal that is interesting and pretty. I hadn't really put it to fashion yet, so thanks for that!

    I really resonate with the things you were saying about using what you have on hand or putting things together that don't necessarily go together. Been using a similar thought process to get dressed recently with these shoes that I spray-painted. The shoes are gray/silver so I have just been throwing them on with some outfits that I would normally wear with white sneakers. Not sure if it always works but I've been enjoying the experimental aspect of doing that
