I lived in Bozeman about 15yrs ago and know this herd too, I was late to work one morning because they were crossing the road ahead of me. Montana definitely stays in your heart!
@@mikebeesley3150 In Montana, it's illegal to shoot game animals from your vehicle (assuming he even had his Elk tag for the hunting season, which would be another crime if he didn't, poaching)

dean nelson Like I said earlier, wolves have to make a living too. And from the elk point of view, I don't have to run faster than the wolves, I only have to run faster than you.
We were in Yellowstone some years ago and came across a huge herd like this one. I was hoping that the last guy was going to figure it out that he needed to get a run at it to clear that fence.
I experienced a crossing like this one in Jackson Hole Wyoming. Being from Florida, it was a awesome experience. In Florida we usually see thing like alligators, opposum and racoons, so see a elk migration was pretty exciting.
The guy that filmed this said he was heading out of his vehicle to help (and you can see the vehicle across the way, that person is also getting out to help). However, this little elk finally figures it out. Give nature a chance first. If they can't do it in the end, then that's when we step in. I love how the other Elk wait for him and once he catches up to them, they continue on their journey. :-)
H0PL0N There are lots of things we unfortunately built in the wild. But we still need to give them a chance to figure it out and then we help. Bottom line, we should always help when necessary.
This was the first elk encounter I had ever had so I didn't quite know how to act, I was going to help the elk but from what I've heard I probably would have gotten quite hurt.
this reminded of me when I was a kid...my family and I went on a bike ride and my father went in front of me with everyone else... and as he was getting further he forgot that I existed and I was screaming real hard for him to wait and I screamed to the top of my lungs and he just forgot that he had 1 more extra kid... so finally after going for so many miles he turned around and I wasn't there... so he sent my brother to come back and get me... I was so relieved yet so tramatized at the same time cause they just left... so it was refreshing to see how some elk waited for the last one...lol... that made me happy :)
I hope you're okay now though even though your father's lack of consideration has burned a traumatic experience in your memory. I'm happy that the elk wasn't left behind and there were actually a few waiting for him, whereas there was no one waiting for me... but I'm still here and alive and well, so that's something to celebrate :)
When I lived in eagle canyon ranch I had to take the frontage road past the old Oxbow ranch on my way to Helena, and there was a herd of elk there every AM around 6:00 that numbered around 300. I always caught them then and around 4:30 PM. It was amazing and the lead Cow and Bull would stand in the road until the entire herd went across and down to the missouri river to drink. I was so happy that last one made it!!! I live in northern NM and I actually did rescue an yearling that was stuck in a fence...she was upside down with her front leg wrapped in the top 3 wires...I cut the bottom wires first and then the top ones. she fell down and I rubbed her shoulder for a bit, afraid she wouldnt be able to walk...then she slowly got up and then walked off. I hoped she learned a lesson, where she jumped over was a hard spot on a hill...and just down the fence line, the fence was only 2 ft high. Elk are really hard on fences, they tear them down all the time getting stuck in them and yanking themselves loose. poor elks
why did you say that? how was it supposed to kick me when it was hanging upside down in barbed wire and exhausted???? If it had been a full grown elk, maybe a different story, but it was a little one. I still feel special about helping that poor elk. If I hadnt helped her, someone else might have just shot her. so you know what I want to say to you? go away and be mean somewhere else
after exhaustion struggling in the fence it is easy prey for wolves, bear, coyotes where it can be ripped to shreds alive. shooting it would have been the humane thing to do. when that happens they do internal damage that may not be apparent to you while they are surging with adrenalin. you touchy feely folks are a riot, you pat yourself on the back and call it a "rescue", it aint. next time put it in a freezer and grill it like ya mean it. Elk are here for people to eat, they arent pets, they arent cuddly. watch some videos sometime of wolves dragging them down and ripping their guts out while they are alive, go rescue that.
It would be good to create an elk crossing corridor on this road, since elk have to migrate. It would be easy enough to make a gap in the fence for the young and the mothers so no elk would be left behind. I have seen too many bruised and bleeding hocks of deer and elk who have to jump a fence like this twice a day. They also make collapsible fences for wildlife that spring up again afterward. Let's be conscious of the needs of forms of life that share this planet with us.

Slenvr If you understand the basic concept of "herd mentality," you'll know that they were not "all" waiting for that one elk. Four were waiting, but some are waiting for the other four, which causes another chain reaction where another group is waiting for the other group. This in turn turns into the "bandwagon effect." Maybe you should do some reading and research before trolling on youtube and making yourself look like an idiot.

This is a beautiful sight. I think the park should have an opening though to prevent injuries. Though the last elk did make it, nobody knows if it injured itself. The way it got stuck in the fence at first...I would think it scraped up it's legs and if not, that's wonderful but it was traumatized regardless. Poor elk. The mass crossing though was one of the most beautiful sights I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
The Elk at the end of that Huuuge herd is really smart! Reminds me of a scene in the movie The Great Escape, where Steve McQueen is escaping the Germans, while on a motorcycle. He's looking for a place that's lower in the barbed wire fence he plans to jump. He Almost makes his escape. The Elk running and jumping the fence reminded me of that great scene in a Classic movie.
Phew! Wondered if he might try jumping the wooden structure, which looked a bit lower. Do elk use the same routes each year? If so, farmers could maybe build in slightly lower sections of fencing?

The way it got stuck in the fence at first...I would think it scraped up it's legs and if not, that's wonderful but it was traumatized regardless. Poor elk.
The mass crossing though was one of the most beautiful sights I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
That last one - sadly, that's my animal spirit.
The Elk running and jumping the fence reminded me of that great scene in a Classic movie.
i was rooting for him.
i knew he'd figure it out eventually :-)
Phew! Wondered if he might try jumping the wooden structure, which looked a bit lower. Do elk use the same routes each year? If so, farmers could maybe build in slightly lower sections of fencing?
All the related elk videos are about hunting/killing these magnificent creatures, many thanks for this!!
lol his buddies were waiting for him on the other side!
Fantastic video
That was an awesome site.
A really interesting thing to see the rest of the herd waited for the one left.
Still here bitch
Когда нибудь да но незнаем когда а может и через миллион лет , уже миллион раз говорили что уже близок конец света , это всего лишь обманчивые догадки .
I love this video, cheered when he made it. His family was there waiting for him when he got over too!
The little Elk that could :3
That's as large a herd as I have ever seen in Idaho.
If Moon Moon was an elk.
