- In today’s video, we are tackling a very iconic anime among the Shonen Fandom, Rurouni Kenshin Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story We will talk about the history of this show. I hate that it didn't end. I hate that it got spoiled by fillers. I hate that they had to make 2 OVA to showcase Kenshin's origins and End. In the manga the story is very different. In the OVA Kenshin dies.The live action is good but still doesn't match up to the original Anime
I started watching this with fan translated and subtitled imports before it hit toonami. Even the subtitles still called him hitokiri battousai so hearing some call him murder battousai still sounds wierd. The first i watched was the movie involving Shigure Takimi, revolutionaries, and a corrupt military officer. I got hooked. For a long time this became my favorite series and one of my favorite movies, aside from Vampire Hunter D. A great series that even the live action movies are good.
I loved how when his battousai persona took over, not only did his appearance change his speech patterns did as well. I felt it was great storytelling.
Not sure if this is significant that while Yahiko wanted to be strong like Kenshin, he ends up learning kenjutsu from Kaoru, Kamiya Kasshin Ryu. It was also confirmed by the writer that Shishio got his warship from Enishi because Enishi became the head of a criminal syndicate in Shanghai that supplied many things in the black market.

Sorry to bother you 4 months after you made your comment, but a question on your fansub experience. Did it have additional information to give context? For example, I remember during the firefly scene when Kenshin tells Kaoru "Sayonara" before leaving. The (fan)subs included that "Sayonara" was a final goodbye and that Kenshin didn't intend on returning (they just had to twist that knife for those of us who didn't know the full meaning). Was that your experience as well?
@@Hit0kiriMik3 no need to apologize. My experience did not give additional context. It was just straight up translation. It didn’t explain how his speech changed. I didn’t know anything about the character at all. At best some translations said hitokiri was manslayer but that was all. It didn’t even note that his speech changed other than they translated gozaru to mean that it is. They showed that his voice was deeper and he stopped using this phrase. They didn’t even point out how he stopped using certain honorifics like -dono.
The only background info I remember, and it’s been years, is when they were on a train in one episode and Sanosuke was saying it was a teapot being moved by kitsune magic, they added a blurb of what a kitsune was.
I still remember watching Slayers way back when and Lina commented that a circlet she wore was like the monkey king but there was no further elaboration. I had to independently look it up. Some additional contextual information would have been very nice.

Back in the day, I had also dropped this show not long after they took down the mummy.
It got bad quick after that and now I know why
Yeah they really should have stuck to the manga and don't kill me, calling him the mummy is hilarious
Overall it's a good video but, unless there is a difference between the manga and anime and you're taking the view point of over the other, you miss represented a few of the characters.
Saito didn't "agree" to work with Kenshin, he was directed to stop Shisho by the government and was also sent to evaluate if Kenshin would be useful or not. Saito's original response to the evaluation was "Kenshin is useless but the Battousai is very useful". This just shows that Saito works with Kenshin because he is ordered too, not that he really wants to.
Aoshi, you left out that he was actually on Shisho's side at first, because it was going to give him another shot at a 1v1 with Kenshin. After Aoshio lost that second 1v1, he does attack Shisho in support of Kenshin but that was after Kenshin basically lost to Shisho, it's not as straight forward as "Aoshi puts his past with Kenshin aside and agrees to fight Shisho with Kenshin".
Again, the video is very good overall and I bet you and I can agree the character's complicated relationships are part of what makes Rurouni Kenshin such a stand out anime.

I’m trying to figure out Kenshin’s past timeline.
He starts as an orphan. Around the age of 8. Next 10 years is a mess. He learned swordsmanship, sets out across Japan and earned the name Hitokiri Battōsai, then began his journey of redemption.
During which time he takes a wife; lost his wife, and set out again within the following 8 year window before the main series take place.
Maybe it’s just me? But, he should be messed up in the head by now!
