  • Heathrow Pods ULTra trip to British Airways Terminal 5
    British Airways Terminal 5 London Driver-less Pods
    Pods at Heathrow airport are driver-less pods that transport you from the thistle hotel and parking area directly to terminal 5.
    The Pods began operating at London Heathrow in 2011.
    Unlike all UK road and rail traffic, which drives on the left, the PRT system drives on the right.
    Taking the pods at heathrow is one of my favorite ways to reach heath-row for an early morning flight. Alternatively you can take the free bus back to the airport.
    The pods time is around 5 minutes and costs around five pounds for the journey, so if you think about it, that's a pound a minute which does sound expensive.

    As a wheelchair user i encounter some trouble with public transport, wouldnt go near a bus, taxis are ok, and i like the local tram system as long as the trams arent packed, it can feel a bit claustrophobic sitting there with others stood around me. This would be the perfect solution, private, automated, A to B without stopping, futuristic, what more could you want !! lol. I would have one of these as my own personal transport if i could.

    • @Whenitraveltheworld
      @Whenitraveltheworld  5 років тому +3

      I think these would be a great replacement for buses and traffic. If you could get bigger versions of these into cities that would be amazing.

      ua-cam.com/video/TiMyvtIcw74/v-deo.html if you watch this documentary they even talk about it. The pods can actually transport more people per hour than a bus or tram. These are the future.

    I arrived in terminal 1 at Heathrow in the evening from America. I went looking for the Pods. My mistake was that the pods are at terminal 5. An information expert at the airport helped me realize my mistake. Once I go to terminal 5, I found the Pod and made my way to the hotel very easily. The next day, I took the Pod back to terminal 5. Once found, it was very easy to use...just like the video showed.

    They are super cool! I do not particularly believe that they will replace cars completely, but they are ideal for business centers and airports (connecting terminals and etc). The design is exquisite and elegant, the controls are super easy and the smart solutions might help in the future as well.

    • @archstanton8421
      @archstanton8421 7 років тому

      I just use the pods when I get to Heathrow because I have time to kill before my flight. Five minutes to the car park, five minutes back. It amazes me that I very rarely see anyone else waiting for a pod!
      I did try and work out if there was another way in - I walked from the terminal all the way to the Premier Inn opposite the Thistle, and also inside the whole of the car park - but it's inaccessible from that side unless you buy a ticket at the Thistle. You can't walk into the car park because the road isn't pedestrianised... and it's a very busy road! I stayed at the Thistle last year and tried to see if there was a way of getting in free but of course they've got that electronic gate.

    • @Whenitraveltheworld
      @Whenitraveltheworld  7 років тому

      I always did wonder, I guess you can walk down that grass patch to the car park and walk in that way, but like you said, no side walk to go on. I think I would just pay the charge and use the gate if I stayed again.

    I always wondered what they were like, seeing them circle around the runway either from the road or when landing. Thanks for the video!
    I would take them all the time if their route was only convenient to me! Could they be the future of public transportation, and in the meantime, could they be extended between the terminals, as the current travel time and conditions between Heathrow's terminals are not ideal.

    I love these and think they would be a good system for on-demand transit for people with disabilities. It looks like there is enough space for at least one wheelchair, who could use the system through voice prompts, and if the announcement was made in the proper way (e.g. "close the doors by pressing the top-most button on the panel to your left. The button is marked with a braille letter C and is flashing Amber" it could be independently used by someone who is blind.

      I agree with you, not only would these be great for a wheelchair, they would also be a lot better for the environment.
      Also lets take it a step further and replace cars with these for example, I think there would be a lot less accidents and deaths as they are controlled and would stop reckless drivers.

      You can book plane spotting rooms at the thistle, though they do have an open air bar terrace which is amazing for spotting if the planes are landing on that runway. If you stay at the thistle you need to pay 5 pounds each way to use it still. There are ways to get it for free, but I can't post those.

    If I were going to and from an airport to parking, then yes, I sure would ride on a pod. Who wants to walk that far with luggage?

      Sadly yes at the moment. They had plans to put them to all terminals, but those plans are on holding pending the heathrow expansion plans.

    Great...its not exspensive compared to Australia we pay on average $30 and upwards for a bus seat to the Airport and triple for a taxi....looks like fun

    • @Whenitraveltheworld

      Wow $30 for a bus, is that a local bus to the airport ? That's just a pure rip off.

    wonder what their reliability and economics are like - breakdowns, tech failures, storm damage, vandalism, maintenance, design and build costs, repairs, staffing - whos the manufacturer and whos the sponsor?

      Thank you for direction to Wiki: "The 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) test track in Cardiff was launched in January 2002...The system was originally designed by Martin Lowson and his design team; Lowson had put £10 million into the project...Ultra has twice been awarded funding from the UK National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA)...Operational statistics in May 2012 demonstrate more than 99% reliability and an average passenger wait time over the year of 10 s. Ultra has achieved a number of awards from the London Transport Awards and the British Parking Awards...It connects Terminal 5 to its business passenger car park, by a 3.9-kilometre (2.4 mi) line built on behalf of BAA, the airport's owner and operator. The system cost £30 million to develop...The pods use 50% less energy than a bus...Each pod is powered by four car batteries, giving an average 2 kW and adding 8% to the gross weight of the vehicle... there are now plans to extend it to the rest of the airport and even to the nearest town of Staines-upon-Thames, which is home to many of the airport's staff

    I thought they were free and from the car parks.

    • @Whenitraveltheworld

      When you pay for parking they are including in your parking. If you stay at the hotel there is a gate which they charge 5 pounds for the code. But you can walk out of the hotel around the road , into the car park and jump on the pod for free.
