    For everyone coming here trying to find out if a Tesla is good in extreme cold: they work just fine.
    Last year we were in the single digits fahrenheit a good couple days and I think negative maybe twice. It does drain more battery getting to your desired temperatures, but nothing too crazy. Real fast too. Absolutely amazing.
    I had different charging practices at the time, so this year might be different, but I did have issues with regen braking not being available until I drove a little.
    Edit: also, I used more battery spinning my tires trying to go through snow than I did heating my car.

    You forgot to put your front screen heater on the app (bottom right). It will heat up twice as fast and in frosty weather and clear any ice from your windscreen.

      Hi Damian. You are right, I did not press that button. Right now we have same -5 degrees and just test it again. It goes to 20 degrees inside in about 4 minutes so you are right that is heating up faster. I assume is mainly because is setting the temperature (and fan) to HI because as far as I know this car does not have heated windscreen. Good catch!

    Less than 4 hours until I go to my Model 3 delivery appointment. I had trouble sleeping last night, the wait is killing me. These last few hours are brutal.

      @@ZEFElectric SR+, the only option is blue paint. Sadly...while the date of today was given to me by the website, my local center just called me and said the car is still in transit and won't be here until late Tue/early Wed, so I can pick it up on the 3rd at 1pm. I actually talked to a live person this time to confirm that date so there SHOULDN'T be any more delays.

    Great demonstration. The car heats up pretty fast. I noticed the driver’s window lowered properly when you opened the door so there was no ice buildup there. Please leave 15 seconds or so at the end of your talk so people have time to like and subscribe. I replayed the video in order to get my like in. I noticed many UA-camrs play a theme song for a while at the end of their presentations.

    You made me laugh when you sad -5 is extremely cold. Just a few days ago we talked that it's getting warm and outside it was -15. Everything is relative 😊 thanks for the demonstration.

    This matches my experience. The interior warms up extremely fast so I usually turn on the heater when I go and grab my coat to leave. Melting a lot of snow obviously takes a lot longer and costs a lot of energy so try to clear of most snow and ice first. It's nice that the car charges during heating so my battery's still full when I drive away. Is pre-heating needed? No, but no one likes driving in an ice cold car.

      Yes. And after the latest update (2021.40.6) it doesn’t seem to “fire” the stators to warm up battery so “early”. Result? It consumes even less energy especially on short journeys when there is no need to warm up battery :)
      Another recent functionality is that the Tesla App is now sending a notification to the phone when the cabin reached the desired temperature ;)
      There is another cool surprise that came with the latest update. I’m documenting that now and I will release a material about that soon on my channel.

      Interesting thought… If you were lucky enough to have the car full, in Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2021 model, you can easily camp in winter for 3-4 days inside the car at very comfortable temperatures without any problem.
      I hope Texas will be recovering well after all the difficult days…

    Is there a recommendation how long you should preheat the battery?

      That is a very good question. In the Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual this statement is used several times:
      “NOTE: Tesla recommends activating climate settings at least 30-45 minutes before departure (see Climate Controls on page 124). Preconditioning times depend on outside temperature and other factors.”
      I also recommend to keep the car connected a charger when stored in cold temperatures. If you do that, what I noticed is that the stators will kick in from time to time to keep the battery at some kind of minimum temperature (I believe is +5 degrees Celsius) and did not get the “blue snowflake” sign on the battery. When the car was not connected to a charger, I was getting the snowflake symbol at similar outside temperature.
      Another extract from owner’s manual:
      “If you leave Model 3 parked for an extended period of time, plug it into a charger to prevent normal range loss and to keep the Battery at an optimal temperature.”

      Hi, in one of my comments to this video, I calculated about 0,7-0,8 kWh consumed in the 5 minutes heating up the cabin AND the battery. That is about 1% of the battery capacity.
      Actually heating up the battery takes most of the power as mentioned in the video but, the super cool thing about 2021 model is that after a certain point, the heat stored in the battery will be used back in the cabin.
      This is one of the reason why Tesla will recommend in winter to keep the car plugged in and preheat before departure. In this way, the car will be super efficient as the battery has optimum temperature and store some extra energy in form of heat which will be used to heat the cabin later on. While driving, the power train and battery generates heat and that is recovered and brought back inside the cabin.
      That is called “heat scavenging” and I will explain that in a coming video.

      @@kingprone7846 I thought humid cold felt colder. I live at a place where isn’t actually “cold” if you looking at temperature, usually low single digit temperature above freezing at the coldest. But it felt a lot colder than places that snows.
      because the relative humidity in my area is around 80% year round and never gets below 70% on average even in the coldest months. It’s unbearable without heater because the moisture would suck out all the heat on you body so fast.
      I spent sometime where it gets to -20c casually, to be honest, it felt different when it’s all dry.

      I live between Switzerland and England. Use to get -20 were i am in Switzerland (ski resort) trust me a 0 degrés in England feel a lot colder due to the humidity

    Should only buy an EV if you have access to a garage or private road where you can have your OWN charger. Otherwise charging issues will only get worse in most countries.
    Don't underestimate this issue. Also, without a Tesla, you should 100% only buy vehicles that can charge quickly.
    This will prevent you a lot of headaches and regrets later. Otherwise just go for a regular hybrid car or ICE car.

      Valid considerations yet, charge networks in many countries are growing exponentially right now (you will also say the number of EVs too). One aspect for sure I noticed switching over from a PHEV to a BEV is that, I no longer need to charge to a public place every single day but in average once per week and potentially not at all when we will resume going back to office (most companies offers already charging options at work).
      I plan to do some long trips with this car in countries where EVs are not so popular and will share my experience on this channel. SUBSCRIBE and stay tuned!

      2 Main reasons why I wouldn't want an EV right now.
      1) everything besides a Tesla 3 LR or model S LR is not worth it for people who drive a lot. Infrastructure is not there yet and tax benefits will dissapear in the coming 5 years.
      2) Build Quality of Tesla is very bad compared to similarly priced ICE cars.

      @@ruflelol Of course that can be you choice. Check my channel, I switch from a German made car to Tesla.
      Aspect 1: well covered by Tesla Model 3 Long Range. It’s range and superchargers network were two factors that incline balance towards Tesla compared with others. Is not just the network but is also cost, e.g. charging EVs at fast chargers other than Tesla supercharger will cost almost double here in Europe.
      Aspect 2: Tesla improved big time on build quality. Model 3 feels a bit like a GO KART but a well-made one 😊

      Hi Thomas. No, there is no evidence of heated steering wheel, although some people believe this will be activated later on via a software update - we have to wait and see. On the other hand, my car is one of the first 2021 models arriving in Europe (ordered as 2020 model) and got some 2021 updates but some not (for example I did not get the updated headlights). My car is build in US.

      Honestly, I do not really miss heated steering wheel that much because of three main reasons:
      1) Most of the time I pre-heat the car and air flow (quite warm actually) goes through the wheel, heating it up quite fast (I also use "EASY ENTRY" profile and the wheel is closer to vents and a bit higher);
      2) As you know, the finish of the steering wheel is kind of matt not glossy and cold wheel does not feel that bad;
      3) Usually we do not have such cold weather where I live.
      Model Y would have been my preference as well however, I could not wait longer for that to become available in The Netherlands. So far, I’m happy with M3 LR yet I plan to shoot some more videos with the full experience switching from a family estate car. Check out my channel for more.

    does it charge the battery in the same amount of time when you heat up the car? I mean if the Battery stays on 100% even of you are doing the heating..when connected ofc..

      Hi, welcome here! Yes, the car will pull the energy from the charging source. However, if the charger does not provide enough instant power, the car will pull the addition from the battery. E.g. if you have the car plugged to a domestic socket of 2,3kW, and the car needs 7kW instant power for heating, it will take the difference from the battery. When the power needed for heating (and warming up the battery) will be below the power provided by the charger, the car will charge to the desired level. I hope this helps.

    I wonder how much heat is actually being produced by the heat pump. I’m guessing very little except for running the compressor. Most of the heat is probably just transferred from the battery and motor.

      Hi Will. No, heap pump is actually generating heat. Heat pumps in general are known to be very efficient and their efficiency is measured in COP - Coefficient of Performance, which is a ratio of energy generated in form of heat and input energy. A good heat pump these days have COP above 5. That means if you input 1kWh energy, you will get 5kWh in form of heat. COP is not a static indicator and it’s depending on the difference between external and internal temperatures. The lower this difference is the better.
      This is why Tesla M3 with heap pump is surprisingly efficient in winter in addition to the heat scavenging from the battery (when available).

      @@ZEFElectric Yes, home heat pumps are very efficient even in cold weather because they are moving a huge volume of air over the coil. In a car, it’s not possible because there’s little space and a huge air intake would ruin the aerodynamics. I saw a video from TESLAPEG comparing the 3 driving with and without a heat pump with both cars having about the same efficiency. I’m sure the heat pump is more efficient if you sit in traffic all day, but for most driving the difference is minimal. If you know someone with an early 3, maybe a comparison test?

      @@willaerley7140 If I scale down my head pump from home to the volume of air in the Tesla Model 3 cabin, I’m quite sure it will fit under the hood 😊
      I’ve been watching the video you are referring to and I’m afraid there are some flaws on that one. At second 0:17” you can see the settings on the 2021 model, all blowers are on including back seats and dual climate on for the front passenger. The detailed settings used in 2020 model are not shown at any point in the video but you can already noticed the dual climate is not on in the 2020 model. 2021 is driving in front and there is a drag effect that we should not neglect.
      I believe the difference will be somewhere around 5-8% in energy consumption depending on the outside temperatures and a plus for 2021 will be the head scavenging which 2020 model does not have. It’s not huge difference, mainly applicable in winter, but it is some efficiency added to an already very efficient car.

      Hi Gerard. Energy (KWh) is Power (KW) multiplied by Time (h). In my case I mentioned that the heaters of the battery (which is actually done via the stators of the electric motors - smart system) takes about 7KW plus the heat pump taking around 1.5KW. If you calculate these numbers together, that’s about 700-800 watt consumed in the 5 minutes. I hope this helps.

      Hi Marcus. Correct, my mistake, I just corrected the comment. Regarding masuring the temp with a thermometer, I guess we will be debating where to place the thermometer so on. This is by no means a scientific experiment but an indication that M3 is warming up cabin quite fast.

      @@ZEFElectric In the middle somewhere around the front seats obviously. Turn off the heater and you will see the temp drop to about 10C pretty fast. The indication in the app is not correct.

      @@marcusbiller867 the car heats up the whole cabin inside not just «in the middle somewhere around the front seat». In that case you could place it anywhere. Also in the front you could get a wrong reading if the car is blowing out warm air directly on the thermometer.

      Hello, welcome here. It takes about 7KW in power so in half hour that would be 3,5kWh in energy. On the long range dual motor model that is about 5%. The recommendation is to preheat for long time only when the car is plugged in and before a long/substantial distance trip. For short journeys, 5-10 minutes of preheat is enough to find the car comfortable and that is somewhere between 1 and 2%. I do hope that in some future updates, Tesla will allow to choose when you want to pre-heat the battery (at the moment if you preheat from the app the battery pre-heating is also activated by default).

    I'm wondering, how quickly does the cabin cool down in hotter temperatures? So how many minutes before you leave should you turn on the A/C if it's 30 celsius or something? Thanks!

      Hello, welcome here! During summer time on hot days when the car is parked straight in the sunshine, it can easily go above 50 Celsius inside the car (without having the “cabin overheating protection” on which I hardly do). I did not count exactly but it takes about 3-5 minutes for the car to cool down to about 23 Celsius. Remember, this car is equipped with octovalve+heat pump meaning the cooling system is dimensioned to also cool down the battery pack while charging at power of +200KW.
      One aspect I noticed is that setting temperature to 21 Celsius in Winter is comfortable however, in the summer setting anything below 23 Celsius will make you freeze inside. It seems to be getting better with the updates over the last year but I still find myself adjusting inside temperature from time to time.       Hi. Good question! Yes, you can but (for now) only from the car screen. Not being able to schedule/change pre-conditioning from the APP is a bit daft (and one of the negatives for now on my list) yet, it’s all software and I’m quite sure Tesla will address this at some point.
      I heard that some other third party apps/services that you can link to your Tesla car can offer such option (like for instance Optiwatt but I did not get yet the chance to test that).     Just found this. Inquiring more about EVs. I live in Canada. I am wondering would the Tesla work ok in -30C and start and run decent? would I be able to get decent cabin heat as well? for -30c temperatures? thanks

      It will work with no problem. You will get much lower range as the consumption is higher on low temperatures but will be able to “run decent”. Recommendation is to have a charger at home, keep the car plugged in such extreme temperatures and pre-condition the car before longer journeys (heat up the battery). I plan to shoot a V2 of this video with some data from “inside” the car read with Scan My Tesla tool yet, it will take a while until next winter and most likely I will not be able to have -30C in proximity of where I live.

      @@WorldT no you do not need a garage but it’s always better if you have one (like with any other car). In extreme low temperatures, charging from home outlet (max 2,3 kW here in EU), you will struggle to actually charge because as I mention, the car will first try to heat up the battery (taking/needing about 7,5 kW peak power only for heating the battery) before actually charging it. You will be surprised to see that the battery will discharge instead of charging as it doesn’t manage to keep the battery warm to actually start charging. It does this to protect the battery but also to be able to charge (same like with phones - it happened to me once while we were skying, I plug in the phone and initially was not charging but it started shortly after warming up). So, in your case with extreme low temperatures I will definitely recommend 7,5-11kW charger near by or install one at your home (outdoor is fine as well). Keep in mind, even without extreme temperatures, charging from home at 2kW ish will require about 35 hours for a full 0-100% charge on the Tesla Model 3 Long Range. Of course you will hardly need that (I didn’t since I got the car) and unlike an ICE car, charging needs depends very much on your driving habits/needs as well.       @@WorldT I was lucky to make the transition to full EV gradually by driving a PHEV for almost 5 years learning many aspects about electric driving (like charging, range dependencies, regenerative breaking, charge apps...) yet, still have the full benefits of an ICE vehicle. Check on my channel my experience with Volkswagen Passat GTE PHEV (I’m not sure that model is available in your area). I still plan to shoot a video with my overall experience from switching between the two.
      Will I ever get back to ICE? - probably not but it depends of course in what country you are and the practicalities around using an EV (charge network, climate, subsidies). Supercharger network was one of the deciding factor for me to go for Tesla as it gives me the “piece of mind” on long journeys. It works great even though I’ve not use it much due to COVID times and good range on Model 3 Long Range. If for whatever reason I will need to go back to ICE, I will for sure choose a PHEV. There are many EVs coming up these days and they start to address different segments as well (SUVs, sport, family, business, city/long trips). Balance between range and charge speed is also getting quite good plus running cost on EVs is way lower than a standard ICE. Using and EV is slightly different than ICE and that is probably the only aspect we need to get used to :)

      Hi Dan. No, there is no evidence of that although some people believe it will be later available via a software update. Honestly, I do not really miss that much because of three main reasons:
      1) Most of the time I pre-heat the car and air flow (quite warm actually) goes through the wheel, heating it up quite fast (I also use "EASY ENTRY" profile and the wheel is closer to vents and a bit higher);
      2) The finish of the steering wheel is kind of matt not glossy and cold wheel does not feel that bad;
      3) Usually we do not have such cold weather where I live.

      A pair of nice leather gloves also really does the trick. Even with heated steering wheel i often drive with leather gloves in the winter, because I use them outside before entering the car anyways

      The 2021 model with Heat Pump is damn efficient and you get instant heat as well. You can definitely say that in general frameless cars are not meant for extreme cold conditions and hidden handles could be problem if rain is freezing on the car. Lot’s of “if” but what I can say is that the car handles quite well winter and snow. Maybe not so good are the way wipers are clearing salt/dirt on the windscreen…
      When I will have -25ºC, I will for sure test it. If you get the chance to test, feel free to share here :)

      @@ZEFElectric Thanks. Last winter was colder and we had more issues with stuck door handles and windows that wouldn't open or close. This year it's milder and I was not locked out of my Tesla a single time. Still, I think there are improvements to be made on the M3 for winter conditions. Once sitting inside the car, it handles slippery roads in an impressive say and never gets stuck. It's powerful and responsive. Charging outdoor by -25ºC at a Supercharger or at a Chademo station works fine if you preheat the battery a bit. I'm happy with my car!

      Hi Hugo. Thank you for sharing your experience. I have my M3 LR 2021 (European version made in US) for two months now (actually tomorrow is exactly two months) and one thing I can say is that this car is not really meant for extreme winter climate (Which EV is made for that?). However, it is handling exceptionally well in the winter/snowy roads (as very well pointed by you) and some improvements are made in relation with heat pump, heat scavenging (great functionality that very little EVs have) and new battery chemistry not so sensitive to extreme cold temperature.
      There is a saying that “when you buy a Tesla, you buy a computer, a battery plus an engine(s) and you get a car for free” 😊 Now I kind of figured why they say that yet, I like the car, just the way it is. More experiences to come with it...

      Hi Frederick. It was minus 6C, that is 21F. Not extreme temperature for Canada but cold enough for The Netherlands :)

      He said 6' but the phone showed -6 , if it was + 6 the snow would be melted off. Night was -8 so I think it actually was -6 which would be 21' Fahrenheit .

      At anything less than -20 Celsius, the heat pump will be no more efficient than resistive heating. But it’s still good to have since it can never be less efficient than resistive

      At the first look it might indeed seem hilarious however, I did some research on this and actually, we have a FEATURE here at play 😊
      Because this car has frameless doors (like an ICE modern coupe), the windows will lower when open the door and go up inside the frame gasket when closing. When the car is parked in cold climate, there is a risk that the windows will freeze (like on any other car) so it will be difficult to open the door as the window will not lower. You will see this problem on most of coupe cars with similar design.
      However, Tesla implemented a feature so when the car is parked in cold weather, it will slightly lower the windows just at the edge of the gasket so you can enter the car with no problem. I did not mention the ice INSIDE the car, just at that very top edge because I used heating (snow melted) and did not drive after so it was freezing right after.
      I hope this explains and my apologies if this was misleading you.

    At minus 40 degrees farenhigt I'm not so sure about that it would seem like an auxiliary gas heater would be the only practical way to produce heat in extreme cold. I know electric heat is terribly inefficient. Plus what if you break down or run out of charge. I'm not anti ev but this seems like a big problem to me.

      At that low temperature, even a standard ICE (without auxiliary heater) will struggle - I remember my first diesel car was struggling below -4F. There are some guys that try EVs in some extreme temperatures and they seem to be able to cope quite OK but indeed, you do not have that redundancy like you will have on an ICE with a separate auxiliary heating.
      Regarding efficiency, I agree at extreme cold, heating electric will take quite some energy. For your reference, I measured power that the car takes to keep the car warm at 5F outside temperature and it takes between 0,8kW in the first hour (if you were driven the car before the battery is warm), 1,6kW after that and about 2,5kW for first hour if the car was not driven before (and you only want cabin heating).
      Considering let’s say half of the battery capacity, that will give you already enough energy for quite many hours to keep the car warm.
      I do not have frequently such low temperatures in the place I live in order to perform more extreme tests on this but I will use any given opportunity to do so. For now, we enjoy the summer :)

      "I know electric heat is terribly inefficient." Could you elaborate on this statement? How exactly is "electric heat" "terribly inefficient"? Yes, using electricity (highest grade energy) to produce heat (low grade energy) does not necessarily mean it is inefficient. It simply means you could have used it for more challenging purposes. If you measure efficiency as "degree cabin temperature per USD", you may be better off burning gas. And this does not apply if you happen to have a renewable energy source. If you measure efficiency as "degree cabin temperature per kWh used" electricity is likely to win as a) you can focus where energy is captured and b) send just as much heat as you need.

      @@airborne1973ff OK I made that remark without doing research and have to admit I was ignorant on the battery capacitys used in electric cars and the wattage used (although I don't know how many watts will heat a car at -20°f) I no longer think the extra wattage is as big a problem that I used to think. It's just that what people call extreme cold in the lower 48 isn't really cold to us. So was skeptical about heating on these cars.

      Did you noticed the cable plugged in and me saying that the day before I was driving the car and some late night images (3:53)? Yes, the car was at charging overnight. That charger is an AC charger and is charging the car at max 11kW so it takes some time. Another aspect you need to know that Tesla can be used to balance the load on the electricity grid via some 3rd party apps and that’s what I do as well. I will shoot a separate video about that one day. Subscribe and stay tuned!
      Last remark: did you notice the ICE car parked next to mine blocking the second charge spot (not reserved for EVs yet)?

      Hi Ron. Extremely valid point however not always practical. On public AC charging, it takes about 5-6 hours to fully charge M3 LR so it's a bit un-practical to move it in the middle of the night especially in lock down and on a street where there are yet not many EVs.
      Another aspect for you to know is that, Tesla can be used to balance the load of the electricity network so, it is actually recommended that the car is kept connected to the charging spot. That is a dilemma and I asked for a point of view from the authorities responsible for charge network in my area. They are aware of the challenge and plan to address this by expanding the charge network even further (I was told in my city they install about 200+ extra charge points per month). On the other hand, I’m not sure what’s worse: keep an EV parked all night with an active charging session or a normal ICE car blocking charge spots. Idle fees and fines will probably solve this problem but will create others therefore is about all of us being sensible about this.
      I choose myself to use my Tesla to balance the load of the network and I plan to shoot a video about that. SUBSCRIBE and stay tuned if you are interested!

      @Ron Verbrugge Hi Ron, I know the feeling of going around many charging spots and find them blocked by various type cars. Maybe my tip will help your situation: I use "Chargemap" app to “Check In” on many charging spots and indicate in the app when the spots are blocked by other vehicles.
      Over time, it will look like this:

      In my case, that history (over multiple spots) helped me to convince authorities to install additional charge spots in my close surroundings despite an initial negative answer on my request. Probably I will not be too popular with some neighbors yet, the transition to electric mobility is here.
