- This is a 20min edited version of Birds of Prey to show off the helicopter sequences with the Hughes 500 and Lama. This is some of the best helicopter shots on film especially the standoff in the valley and the abandoned airport. The shots inside in the old hangar are truly amazing. My hats off the the two pilots. James W. Gavin (1935-2005), an amazing pilot, was the films aerial supervisor but the credits don't say who the pilots were.
Also amazing is that this was a "made-for-tv" movie in 1973, I remember seeing it then and got hooked on helicopters.
Thanks to Tomorrow Entertainment for producing a great helicopter film.
Still some of the best helicopter flying ever put in a movie
One of the best helicopter movies of all time!
Thanks 😎
I've looked for this film many times over the years. They don't make movies like this with such epic flying sequences and David Jannsen is superb. Fabulous clip
''Deadly encounter'' starring Larry Hagman is another great one.
Clint eastwood in the gaulet. shoots down the chopper similiar to this one, not the hughes 500. classic
Fantastic helicopter stunts! These pilots are amazing. But the capabilities of the Hughes 500 and the Lama are amazing as well, when they are in the hands of great pilots! I am in awe! Thanks for the great cllip!!
Like how the 500 pilot uses a hand mic, doesn't wear a helmet or even a headset, and still hears all the comms. Gotta love hollywood!
A helmet would only interfer with his Hollywood hair do. Got to look your best !
I could care less about the plot, script or acting, I'm only here for these two outstanding helicopters and the Pilots that flew them!
They're the real stars!
So you do care

I consider my post to be self explanatory...
Yes, the best in the business, also lethal weapon pilot was very good also, I heard he was a vietnam war hughes 500 attack pilot.
They Don't make such amazing movies anymore.
Didn't know it would end like that 🤷🏻♂️
Wow, the 500 and Lama in the same movie. Two of my favorites.
My dad worked at Aerospatiale as a Technical Rep. among other positions. I grew up around all those old Aerospatiale helicopters... My favorite was the Gazelle. I saw this movie a couple times in the late 70s, late night re-runs... Loved the aerial footage.
Look for the movie “deadly encounter” with Larry Hagman
@typo pit It IS a lama, looks the same as Alouette2 but with Alouette3 bigger turbine, 3 blade tail rotor, and higher landing skis.
@@EnduroTravelSolutions my first thought on seeing this. Deadly Encounter is a cheesy blast!
Great movie, haven't seen this in years, one of my favorite movies as a kid. If your old enough to remember, David Janssen was the former star of the 1960's, TV series, "The Fugitive." David Janssen was one of my favorite actors. Thanks for sharing this!
Using authentic helo sounds too. Very rare for Hollywood
A shared memory with my late father. We both loved this movie, I remember watching it when it first aired. If anyone wants to know what the difference between TV than and now is show them this movie!
Yep, ABC Movie Of The Week.
Just found, a helicopter junkies dream video..
Two of the greatest helos ever built flown by two of the greatest helo pilots ever. Wow!
I love this movie
This flick has James Gavin all over it. R.I.P Sir.
Great filming love the lama and Hughes 500c what helicopters when you think there came out in the 60s
I was eleven, and this flick made me want to be a helicopter pilot...ended up flying gunships with the U.S. Army...
Same here but when I tried in the Army I was turned downed because I didn't have 20/20 vision.
That was suprisingly riveting.
This needs to be re made again, I really liked the David Jason guy, they could have done a better job with him looking like he's really flying that bird, but whats ya going to do back then. Great flying scenes to boot considering what they had to deal with, no CGI here.
I totally agree, they really need to remake this.
@@martyp3428 David Janssen was a licensed pilot in real life
This reminds me of of the chase scene in Bullet between the Mustang and Charger.
Tom Cruise would admire this movie fantastic aerial footage and piloting of these two Choppers Way Back When...😎....🚁🚁
Blue Thunder has good flying scenes also.
Que recuerdo...años que no la veía... muchas gracias.....
if anything needs a remake its this movie
When this first aired it featured a lot of 1940s music by the original artists but there was some sort of copyright problem so subsequent airings only had this generic jazz.
I remember that. I was always surprised that the makers or owners of the firm didn't release on VHS or DVD, they really missed out on some profit!

@@timchristopherson572 Some songs are in the public domain.
Which is why you see the guy halariously singing along to instermental music.
Hard to see. Both birds were destroyed in two crashes a year later in 1974. Both crashed and were totaled at different locations in the same year.
Cab you please link me the articals on that.
The LAMA was somewhat slower than the 500.
@Geo HVL , Not much is as nimble as a 500.
I was born in 64 I erd bout it, omg
Hmm, Wendover airfield still looks the same after all these years.
I’ve always wondered what would happen if one helicopter hovered over the other one. Loss of lift and crash?
Interesting how an early 70s green Chrysler car is described as a 1969 blue Oldsmobile.
@J W , Yesterdays green is todays blue.
Thy don't Mek films as that no mur , wot a film 🎥
MEGA geil
The helicopters are great , the movie ??????
Love that movie. I wonder if you can get it on DVD?
You can get it on DVD I've had it for a few years now, I saw this movie when I was a kid.
@@hermanguzman1460 Thank you for the information!
Watching it nw 👍
Great Aerial Stunts! Terrible music! *_>:O_*
And Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry and the Gauntlet with Clint Eastwood. Check em out.
Jim Gavin did the flying in Birds of Prey and Dirty Larry and Crazy Mary.
DAVID JANSEN IS ONE OF THEM
What’s the name of this canyon that they flying around?
November 329 foxtrot, I've known that number most of my 58 years
Hi
I have the same memory and l'm only 54
I will remember the "kbex" red&white hughes 500 for all my life although i have seen it only once probable in 1975.
Never Seen such flights before, helicopter passing under bridges and more.Thought i could not see it again. Great memory.
Thanks for Sharing.
I am in France
Lovely wen e knocked em over wiv bottom of landing earns ,lol 🤣🤣
Is this the whole movie?
No
Too bad they don't do real stunts like this anymore. Everything is frigging c.g. I guess its too hard to insure anything like that these days. These were reeeeal pilots baby!!!
That is precisely why you don't see practical stunts like these done anymore. Dang insurance... Don't let stunts like these get sidelined for cheaper C.G. ...!
@@stot2614 I’m sure Cruise could after “Top Gun: Maverick” and the last “Mission: Impossible”. With the chopper chase.
@@AirwolfArchive Not with the insurance of today. Everything is too expensive these days to really makes sense of writing that kind of check for one movie. Not sure that even Cruise could pull off that kind of precision along with another pilot... That control is like an aerial ballet where both pilots need to be equally talented.
@@stot2614 You are aware how much studios spend today, right? How much “TG: M” has made? Most of the pilots from the “Airwolf” days (for example) are still around as well. They have sons who’ve followed in their footsteps. I didn’t mean for Cruise to fly on his own again...Janssen here wasn’t.
@@AirwolfArchive Not many if any insurance companies would take on such dangerous practical effects. That is why you don't see this type of series of stunts performed that often. Besides.. This increases the classic effect in a day and a time where movies were that much better quality because they didn't have they technology of CGI... They had to do this as opposed to cut such a whopping check even for the studio's standards. What Cruise did is an anomaly in today's theater.
they changed the music in this version.
I have got some audio cassettes with the full audio recorded off this movie from the early seventies, this will be with the original soundtrack and original music.🤗🤗🤗🤗
The producers had short term rights to use the copyrighted music. Later those purchased rights lapsed so unfortunately you lost some great music that helped make the movie when it came out in 1973.
This was a great movie BUT this version has changed ALL the original music. terrible.
Have you got any gas? 😂 Not very useful in a gas turbine heli (despite the name ;)
It will run on gas even on oil but not too good for the turbine blades.
Showwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
So dumb. At 3:30 just happens to spot a semi tanker full of gas - jet fuel no less. Does a hot refuel and STILL manages to catch up. And in all this time no other birds, fixed or rotary, manage to get near any of this. Lame.
We ain't here for a plot critique. It's all about the flying.
I did some investigating. In 1973, the Salt Lake City Police Department used Bell 47-D's in 1973. They were not catching up to that Lama. It was a big area to comb over if the Army or Utah National Guard were to lend a hand, it might have taken them some time to find them. They were regularly flying low, below 300 ft to beat the radar.
