Denise, one of the reasons I love you is because you are an artist of all the mediums. I am too. I go through my fazes with each medium and many at same time. I am currently in an acrylic class while at same time teaching myself oil painting, while at same time doing watercolor fun and mixed media projects. I taught photography at the college level for 18 years….and I’m from the south! However every art event I attend I’m asked so…what is your medium? What type of artist are you? And it always makes me feel less than and not respected because I’m not just a one type artist. You make me feel so much better knowing that it’s ok to be like us! Thank you for all you do and all you share with us. I enrolled in your Skillshare classes too, because I feel like I’m home when in your classes. You rock..”however my credit card limit had to be increased watching you…hahahaha”
It was so refreshing to hear this comment I couldn’t agree with you more I’m exactly the same. Everyone always asked me what I use as though it could only be one thing and when I tell them I like all mediums the looks I get, are more like Oohh I get it your not a REAL ‘Artist’ you just do it for a hobby. In a way ,’d love it if I just had one medium it would be so much cheaper. However being an art supply addict doesn’t help either. So nice to be here with people that get it and are also positive and uplifting you’re not alone. Merry Christmas and happy holidays or whatever you celebrate. Also, Denise, just thinking patron possibly?
@@jessbutterfly1934 I'm thinking Mixed-Media Artist is the best tag for the things we make - so that is what I say instead of a particular medium now... I've considered Patreon... I've been transitioning my business over more and more to art from photography the past couple of years... so I've been a bit over-committed. What kinds of things would interest you on an art Patreon channel?
I LOVED your running commentary throughout this video. You shared a lot of yourself, and that was much appreciated. It felt like I was sitting on the edge of the bed, chatting & watching a friend get ready to go out.
I like using Krylon Easy Tack Repositionable Adhesive Spray on the back of the stencils. Press firmly on paper, then spread thin coats. If you use too much paste and press straight down (rather than holding the palette knife at an angle to the paper) it will force the paste under the stencil. Enjoy your videos Denise!😊
Hi Denise. That's another beautiful project. I tried it as I'm doing book marks for an art fair, and it was a lovely addition. I apply the gel medium using a plastic spatula from the hardware store. It comes out perfect every time. I also make my own medium using mica powder mixed with Golden gel medium. I always enjoy your videos
My craft room is filled with water color, acrylics, paper, canvas, salvaged everything from tissue paper to envelops. I have Cold Wax and Oils, Tracing paper and tons of the Where Women Create too. I haven't decided on one medium. At times it feels like I am directionless, other times, I can't wait to try something new....I love your channel. Thank you for sharing
Ok then!! Ha!! Kissaho! Too funny!! But that's how I remember things too sometimes. Very nice video and you know I want the Kissaho's too!! Love that Stencil Butter! Me and stencils and paint fight ALL the time!! 🥰🏜️
Hey Denise! I'm resisting the purchasing bait, just for today...as I'm saving for all the upcoming art Black Friday deals!! But, I do have many stencil pastes and wanted to share a lil insight to help your stencil butters last a much longer time. Once you open each of them, immediately cover them with Press N Seal. I have a 16oz of the white stencil butter so I can mix my own colors with acrylic, inks or watercolor, and not be so invested in EVERY color. I've had the 16oz jar for 2yrs, and it's still soft and moist. Enjoy all those pastes! Also Robin McClendon has a UA-cam channel for all things gelli plate printing, fearless like you!
Oh my! I'm just like you in that I flit from medium to medium and project to project. I have don't miniature dollhouses, crochet, knitting, quilting, embroidery , scrapbooking, cardmaking, ceramics, jewelry making and watercolor! Inside water color I've tried different styles and techniques and your style lets me be free! Free from trying to be perfect; free from caring too much because I can always cut it up. I love all your videos and even though I can't afford to by all the supplies you show us, I look at them and sometimes I can substitute something I have to create something similar. So Thank you Denise! I'm so enjoying painting right now and I feel like even though I may flit to something else in the future, I sure am loving what I'm doing right now. Actually I'm combining painting and cardmaking!
I'm a huge fan of those organization books. I have every Where Women Create and In My Studio magazine. This is a fun video. I think I need that Wasabe book too. Hugs, Diana.
Pixie spray on the back of the stencil will keep it flat to eliminate/reduce paste getting underneath the stencil. And you just cracked me up with Kiss a Ho!
Omgosh, I love Robyn Mc Clendon's book. I was lucky enough to take her workshop in Prescott this weekend. She is such an inspiration. Her book is really a coffee table book, love it.
You are a force of nature, say it like it is,and open to new explorations!👏👏 I love watching and learning from you! This video rocked! Hi , Loving your work which I am seeing for the first time. Would you let me know where you got the colour card combination colour cards from please? It is interesting to use new colour combinations. Love your laugh. You had me grinning at your chuckles. It’s so much fun seeing your videos and knowing the pleasure you get from your creativity. Thanks for sharing.
So pretty! I love the stencil work at the end. I think that gray color would have gone well over these brights too - dramatic! May have to try & create that myself! When you're unboxing and talking about discovering all the art supplies, and trying different things, going from oils to acrylics to inks to watercolors like a butterfly -- this is me! My best friend and I sit down with art supplies nearly every Saturday night after dinner and just play. No masterpieces, although we have exchanged art we've created or made something and passed it on to someone else - but we share supplies (and maybe a bottle of wine) and just have fun.
Your curiosity to try new products and your infectious enthusiasm keeps me coming back for more! 😂 Had fun with you today!😂🎉 A huge thank you to you, lovely, unconventional, Denise!🥳😍🌈🙋♀️
I so enjoy watching you open and use new products! I really like the colors you used and I too love watching them flow into each other! 😍 "I Dream of Jeannie" was one of my favorite shows growing up! I occasionally watch "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (showing my age 😉) and I get a kick out of seeing how much things have changed!
I love that you own your curiosity about, and enjoyment of, different media. I’m the same way, and it can be a source of self-doubt if I start thinking too much about the fact that I’m not mastering any particular medium. But I love art supplies and figure that only by trying a lot of things will I find out what I like best (at least at that moment in time!). I’m also an advanced amateur photographer so your comments about different cameras and lenses hit home (I’m into infrared photography and the newly manufactured Lomograohy lenses)! I recently saw a video by Papertude on Kissho Saibiboku paints, which are like the Gansai paints but made with Sumi ink sticks, so they have muted color qualities not unlike the graphite paints. They don’t seem to be available in the US, sadly, but it may be worth keeping an eye out for them! Also, I am a big fan of Robyn’s art - you should totally check out her YT channel!
I went through an infrared phase too!! I’d love to have a camera converted. I played with the infrared filters when I couldn’t afford the extra camera to convert. I have one of the lomography lenses too. Not my favorite. But cool. I did a whole lot of blog posts on my website with different lenses. Thank you! 🥰
Ooooo…shopping! The colors you chose are beautiful. I have several jars of paste and bought some of the stencil butter over the summer but I do struggle with seepage. I bought some spreaders at the hardware store, which helps, however, Tim Holtz uses a mini squeegee that he got on Amazon that does a better job because of the flexible rubber edge. Haven’t bought one yet. Thanks for sharing your art haul and your talent.
As long as you are into new watercolor books, you should check out Ann Blockley. She’s a fabulous experimental watercolor artist and in her last book, she adds collage: Poetic Woods. She’s inspirational! Enjoy your intuitive vibe and always look forward to your videos.

I just got my Kakimori pen a little while ago. I have NEVER spent that much on a pen, but having used it just a little bit, I see why you love it, and I think it's the art supply that I have been looking for!
It does hurt a little to spend that on a dip pen... but it truly is my very favorite art supply... so it was really worth it to me. I love it. So glad you gave it a try! 😊
Denise, I liked your joke kiss a hoa. That was hilarious and now I cannot unhear it and thanks to you I prefer that name to KISSOH. LOL .... This is all in pure fun. No disrespect to Japanese names that may have some deep meaning. ❤❤Japanese stationery and art products are some of the BEST in the world and I value every product that gives me so much joy every day. We are just in a silly mood today.❤❤
I was definitely feeling silly. The Japanese products are fantastic. I got that wrong pronunciation in my mind… and it might always be that in my mind now 😂
Thanks for the art inspiration and the book recommendations. I just put a hold on the Wabi Sabi book at the library. I share your love of the Japanese aesthetic and I've collected some antiques over the years. If you haven't been to Kyoto, you should put it on your list of places to visit. It is extraordinary with 19 world heritage sites. Now my second favorite city and I can't wait to go back.
Love the colour palette. I also thought they looked more transparent. I have watercolour pens but never thought of using for mark making. Thanks for the idea.
Denise whenever I see that you are opening art hauls I need to just go cut grass or something else. I’m going to be in the poor house because I wind up buying a lot of these items you show on your hauls. 😂🤣 I love watching your videos so much. You are such an upbeat artist. Thank you. 🎨🖌️
Denise, I would love to see you publish, a book that features your artwork, not a how to book just a book that’s full of page after page of different things you’ve created and photos you’ve taken throughout the years. I find it really hard to find Art books that are on just a pacific artist, or a few different artists that feature their artworks without heaps of words.
I'd love a book like that too... I definitely have plenty to pick from now for the art... and lots of goodies in my photography.. future project for sure! Thank you! 🥰
I did a watercolor (tube) experiment on canvas just yesterday. I use Blick's 18x 24 pre gesso canvas pad and sealed again with Daniel Smith watercolor ground. I didn't use water at this time to see how it would spread, yet. It didn't go through. Since the stencil paste is soft just like soft modeling paste the chances of it going under is very high unless the adhesive spray is used.
Well, this was fun Diane! And the perfect idea for a Christmas card.❤🕯🕯❤🎄🎄 I was happy it went to 20 minutes. Greedy me is not happy with just 15 minutes of your company!😏 Have a wonderful weekend lovely lady!😍🌈💫
I just got a gelli plate for Christmas and starting to play with it to figure out what I can do with it and I like the idea of using it for more than just collage pieces. I’d love if you could do some videos on how to use it ❤️
Denise that was so colourful and paints do appear much less opaque 🤗I love it , Could I ask where you sourced those lovely Stencils from please .. ? Thank you so much as always x
Well my Christmas list just got longer! Thanks for showing all your new goodies. I use stencil butter a lot. I use a lot of tape to make sure stencil is not going to move. I’ve never used Pixie Spray to adhere the stencil on watercolor but card makers use it over inked backgrounds so it’s probably ok.
OMG, i ordered those watercolors a month ago and havent cracked open the box. Hospital visits tend to get in the way. Love the stencil butter. So smooth. Todays color choice so weird so good. 😊😊😊
Hi, Denise, lovely pieces today ❤️ i've had the Robyn Mcclendon book on pre-order since April, and its still not released here yet in the UK 😢 29th November I think 🤞With the stencils, try not to work the paste too much, don't go back and forth. Look at the design and choose one direction to spread it. The stencil butter does seem quite thin so that won't help. Also make sure you've got you stencil the right way up. There is a front and a back to them, which helps stop the pastes from going underneath. I hope this helps 🤗 thanks again, and i hope you have a lovely weekend, take care, Jane x
Wonderful haul and totems. I too love the Women create magazines, I will have to get that organization issue. I have not used stencil butter, so can't give you any pointer, sorry! Thank so much.
Add a light spray of spray adhesive just the stuff graphic designers use to stop seepage of paint under stencils an old trick from the 1990s great videos very inspiring
I thought you might show these KISSHO paints sooner or later here on the channel. If you have the time please do a colors swatch and compare the colors with Gansai Tambis, if it´s possible. Like greens to greens and so on. Practice pieces ... 😂 I´ve made LOTS of them lately ... Thank you so much for your inspiration and good advise. 😍
Thank you! 🥰 I have a teacher neighbor that I pass on the things I don’t love… she keeps some and uses some in her classroom. She is a marker girl - so most markers go her way! 😊
That is what I have done. I have tried so many different things. This year I am not sure where I will land. I now I am working with graphite and drawing better but I will keep doing the watercolor. I flit from flower to flower. LOL
I regard to the palette knife - use one with a rounded tip and not a pointed one. This will help prevent the paste from traveling underneath the stencil as well as make your application smoother
Those are beautiful, Denise. As always, you are a treat to watch and listen to. I'm in FL enjoying an overcast 83 day, looking forward to some cooler temps (we get to open the windows, yay), and picking my holiday art supplies. And speaking of holidays... I'd like to share a beautiful, and heartfelt Christmas song with you, written my husband. He's an award-winning songwriter. But I won't post a link without having your permission as this is your channel, and that would be rude-and very tacky, so I didn't even mention his name. (It's not to sell, just to watch his video.) Not to put you on the spot, as this is public, if you'd rather not, then just ignore this part of my comment and I won't be offended. :)
It is rainy and in the 60’s here! So glad you enjoyed these! My channel has links turned off on UA-cam - prevents spammers and trolls from posting bad stuff - but thank you for the lovely offer. 🥰🥰🥰
I watch your videos out of order, so you may answer this in a later video. Have you tried the watercolor on canvas book techniques in one of your mixed media journals? Random commented, it took me forever to figure out that was a cow on the cover😂. It wasn't until you started the flip through that I finally saw the cow.
Thank you for the Wabi-Sabi recommendation. I'd never heard of this philosophy. My knowledge of Japanese culture is minimal at best. This book has sparked my curiosity to learn more about wabi-sabi and the Japanese tea ceremony. It's fascinating to hear it discussed in religious terms. I don't think my way of preparing tea will hold up. 😊
Skillshare is offering a Black Friday sale this week. I signed up just so I can access Denise's courses. (But there is also a lot of other cool stuff there.)
I was excited to see you experiment with the stencil butter. Is it possible to apply it with a sponge, or is it too thick? What would be the benefit of the stencil butter vs. acrylic paint?
I'm definitely going to be using it with a sponge next time... is a nice thickness for that. Seems like regular body acrylic paint... so maybe that is what it is?
If you need tips on using stencil butter pm artists studio in their last two livestreams were using stencil butter through most of their streams. P is a master at it.
I totally agree on the gel plate, a finished piece of art. I follow Liz Chaderon, she has a way different style but interesting. The whole art discovery is vast and so much to take in or where to start. So keep it coming. ❤❤ You’ll find the names of the colors at The products description

I love your rings you’re always wearing. Wear to you find them? Your art is so amazing too. Love watching your Chanel.
Those are antique rings that belonged to my mother. We used to hunt the antique shops when I was younger for cool jewelry. Thank you! 🥰
Denise whenever I see that you are opening art hauls I need to just go cut grass or something else. I’m going to be in the poor house because I wind up buying a lot of these items you show on your hauls. 😂🤣
I love watching your videos so much. You are such an upbeat artist. Thank you. 🎨🖌️
Bwhaha! I just busted out laughing at the grass cutting. You’re too funny. Thank you! 🥰
Thank you! 🥰
I looked at the video and thought to myself ‘what did she buy now ? and what would I like to buy 😂’. Oh Denise you are naughty on my wallet. ❤❤
I’m totally naughty 😂😂😂 Thank you! 🥰
these are the same colours I have been playing with a lot lately. I love Moroccan/Persian inspired colour palettes. These turned out beautiful.
I really liked this palette. I'll definitely revisit it! Thank you! 🥰
Didn't know you were on Skillshare! Awesome!
Yes! I’ve been on there for a few years. This UA-cam is fairly new this year. 😊
So glad you hung out with me today!! Thank you! 🥰
I just got a gelli plate for Christmas and starting to play with it to figure out what I can do with it and I like the idea of using it for more than just collage pieces. I’d love if you could do some videos on how to use it ❤️
I have a few skillshare classes on the Gelli Plate if you are on there! It is fun to play with! 😊
Denise that was so colourful and paints do appear much less opaque 🤗I love it ,
Could I ask where you sourced those lovely Stencils from please .. ?
Thank you so much as always x
Thank you! 🥰 I post all the supplies in the description below the video for you! 😊
Good info! Thank you! 🥰
OMG, i ordered those watercolors a month ago and havent cracked open the box. Hospital visits tend to get in the way. Love the stencil butter. So smooth. Todays color choice so weird so good. 😊😊😊
I'm excited to play in the new colors. Can't have too many! haha! Thank you! 🥰
@2lilowlsstudio i dont know who i saw using them but when i did, you know i was on the purchase button fast than you could say buy buy buy. LOL
@@TammieWardArtsomeone in my Facebook group shared them with me. I hadn’t looked at them before. 😊
@@2lilowlsstudio 🥰
Great tips! I didn't realize that book was brand new when I saw it on Amazon... was just a lucky find - but I really like it! Thank you! 🥰
I love the not perfect 🎉 thats why i love your channel😊
Thank you! 🥰
Thank you so much for sharing!!
You are so welcome! Thank you! 🥰
Wonderful haul and totems. I too love the Women create magazines, I will have to get that organization issue. I have not used stencil butter, so can't give you any pointer, sorry! Thank so much.
That book has some great ideas! You’ll love it. Thank you! 🥰
Add a light spray of spray adhesive just the stuff graphic designers use to stop seepage of paint under stencils an old trick from the 1990s
great videos very inspiring
Great idea! Thank you! 🥰
Good idea! I’ll add it to my list of ideas. Thank you! 🥰
I do love these totems!
How do you balance consumerism with trying out new materials and/or passing on things you dont like?
Thank you! 🥰 I have a teacher neighbor that I pass on the things I don’t love… she keeps some and uses some in her classroom. She is a marker girl - so most markers go her way! 😊
❤❤❤
Thank you! 🥰
That is what I have done. I have tried so many different things. This year I am not sure where I will land. I now I am working with graphite and drawing better but I will keep doing the watercolor. I flit from flower to flower. LOL
Right? I like to keep things exciting by changing things up... so I just don't worry about it anymore... I'm having fun! 😊
I regard to the palette knife - use one with a rounded tip and not a pointed one. This will help prevent the paste from traveling underneath the stencil as well as make your application smoother
Great tip! Thank you! 🥰
I want to do that looks like so fun thanks
Thank you! 🥰
I just went for a walk in fog! Makes everything so soft. Totally understood on the video. :)@@2lilowlsstudio
❤
Thank you! 🥰
I watch your videos out of order, so you may answer this in a later video. Have you tried the watercolor on canvas book techniques in one of your mixed media journals? Random commented, it took me forever to figure out that was a cow on the cover😂. It wasn't until you started the flip through that I finally saw the cow.
I’ve not tried that. Thank you! 🥰
Oooh! Good deal to get in on a black friday deal. I need to find out what the offer is and share it! Thank you! 🥰
I love their stencils - I'm going to check out those lives! Thank you! 🥰
I totally agree on the gel plate, a finished piece of art.
I follow Liz Chaderon, she has a way different style but interesting.
The whole art discovery is vast and so much to take in or where to start.
So keep it coming. ❤❤
You’ll find the names of the colors at The products description
Thank you! 🥰
Oh my goodness! Your voice and accent sounds just like a good friend of mine! If I were blindfolded I would swear it was her! Where in the world are you? (obviously southern part of the good ol’ USA where I’m living!) 😮😂❤
I just ordered some Kissho too!
Haha! Love that. I’m in Atlanta 😁
I just messaged my friend and asked her if your family. Seriously!!!
@@2lilowlsstudio yes, we are too! Are you in the Brannon family???
McDonough???
@@2lilowlsstudio Crissy and her twin Cathleen???
You are probably already aware but in case you were not…Robin Mclendon also has a UA-cam channel:) great content
Oh good. I hadn't even thought to look! Thank you! 🥰
Well, I tried my 1st totem today. It was fun but not very pretty. I'll keep trying.
So glad you gave them a try! 🎨🎨🎨
have you ever used DR. PH Martin's bombay india ink? I just bought a set but I have no idea how to use them. lol
I have some of the liquid watercolors… but not the inks. I’d use them just like the acrylic inks. Definitely play! 😊
Ha ha! Amazon has the names for the Kissoh watercolor, but it's in Japanese! 😂
I saw the names somewhere. 😁
Robyn McClendon has a UA-cam channel. It's a great source of inspiration.
Thank you! 🥰
Robyn McClendon is on UA-cam as well!!
I'm going to check her channel out. The book is really cool! Thank you! 🥰
Denise, I posted a comment earlier but no longer see it??? Did you notice it or am I living in an alternate universe? LOL
I don't see any comment from you. Did it have a link in it? UA-cam blocks the links for some reason. I haven't deleted any comments. Just came back from the grocery store.
@@2lilowlsstudio Hmmm. No links. Will try it again. Thx.
@@2lilowlsstudio will try again… I was glad to see you had Robyn‘s book. It’s a beautiful book and a piece of artwork in itself. Myself and four of my art friends just got back from Arizona for Robyn‘s first art mythos retreat for the launch of the book. It was great. Robyn is so much fun in person. If you want a chuckle read the back flap of the paper book cover. 👀
@@pattitolleyparrish I bet you had a blast at the retreat!! Lucky you guys! 😁
I cannot stop laughing about "Kiss-a-ho"......because I'm from Idaho and here people think it's funny to say "I-da-ho"....yup, I actually put that in writing. 😝🤣
Hahahah!! That cracked me up!! Now I'm going to think that about I-da-ho just like i think kiss-a-ho for the watercolors from now on!! 🤣
@@2lilowlsstudio 😜you’re welcome!!! Now you’ll think other things besides Idaho potatoes 🥔🤣
Would it work to mix molding paste with mica powder?
You’d have to experiment with that! I’ve not tried it. 😊
Lis chaderton has a UA-cam channel, she is fab.
Cool! Thank you! 🥰
Alcohol ink is not lightfast…so I avoid them unless I plan on photographing for prints
Great tip! Thank you! 🥰
Do you have a Patreon group?
Not yet. I’m considering one for next year maybe. 😊
