With a 1911, only decock the hammer on an empty chamber. Otherwise you may have a negligent discharge. With a round in the chamber, keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you intend to fire

No need to decock on an empty chamber.
The grip safety will prevent firing as long as it is Not depressed.
      An important safety feature.
Firearm will Only fire when grip dafety is depressed AND trigger is pulled.
Only when BOTH actions are taken will it fire.

Never decock a 1911 on a live round. They where intended to be carried cocked and locked. In other words, a round in the chamber and the safety on. Decocking risks a negligent discharge. What is worse the firing pin is not locked so it can go off if the hammer is bumped into the firing pin. For example, if you drop the gun or if something smacks the hammer.
If you want a gun that can be carried in that condition get a Walkter PPK or other double/single action guns with a decocker. An important safety consideration is using the gun in the way it was intended.

So, how many times has that grip safety made your thumb webbing bleed under recoil? Lol changed mine years ago for the much friendlier commander frame grip safety when i redid all my springs, slicked up the ramp, and lowered my trigger pull. Best hand gun in my collection and the wear on mine shows its a favorite. Been with me almost 15 years now. Take it everywhere.
