  • Second try.
I fell at the fourth move on my first attempt. My temperature sensor/device indicated that it was greater than 85°F at the time I climbed this. Yikes. I could not get enough chalk on my hands to make myself feel secure on this polished (but quality) stone. Although this problem was not hard, I did have trouble with transitioning around the corner to the horn in the top section. I started freaking out in my head a little bit but somehow managed to stay cool and problem solve. Always a surreal moment, especially when nobody is watching and telling me what I should do... Climbing highballs forces me to be present in a way that is unexplainable. Definitely one of the best problems of this grade on the mountain.
The downclimb for this boulder is the problem Right Mane (V0). I recommend climbing it as a warmup so that you're familiar with it beforehand. Here's the video:

Wow, that's crazy! It puts the V4's I do in New England to shame. Great job!

Thank you, Jonathan! It's an exceptional problem, and undoubtedly one of my all-time favorites of the grade now.

How do you find this climb! I’ve gotten lost multiple times now

I went with my friend Andrew (BoulderingGems). From the Ok Corral, head west and follow the Lion's Mane Trail straight out, traversing the hillside for about 25 minutes. Once you see the Gucci Mane slab, go past it and the Lion's Mane boulder isn't far behind. Here are the coordinates (per the guidebook): 33.820183, -116.760283.

dope send, way to keep it cool! I saw your other video where you hurt your foot, ouchie! Think you said you got 11 screws? I just have you beat at 14 screws in my calcaneus :) How does your foot feel now a days? Unfortunately, I hurt something called the Subtalar Joint, which you really don't want to do, and the thought of highballing again gives me the willys!

Wow, 14 screws is a lot! My foot is doing well now, for the most part. I feel like I had good flexibility, but right around the time I was finishing PT last month something happened (jumping off a boulder, maybe?) and it swelled up all of a sudden and got stiff again. I guess recovery isn't always linear... I don't mind doing up to V4 on tall boulders. I've sent a handful of problems in the V5-6 range recently, but they are all lowball. The idea of the impact on my foot from falling right now makes me extremely cautious and selective about what I decide to climb. I don't chase grades like I used to; I'm pretty content with doing low grades and fun ones for the time being. I'm very grateful to be climbing at all!

@@AshleySwensonClimbing Awesome to hear your foot feels mostly good. I totally hear you on the non linear aspect of healing. I have good days and bad days for sure. Super happy you are back out there!

@@GiantRock @Giant Rock Thank you, Cole! You'll have to tell me more about your injury later. Looking forward to desert climbing since I basically missed all of last season!

@Ashley Swenson Yes! I'm so looking forward to it as well! We have lots of new problems of varying heights and good landings. We also have lots of new rocks to look at and explore as well, so pretty perfect for us cyborgs. Looking forward to hanging someday and giving you my whole tragic story, all my friends are tired of hearing about it so I need new ears to spray at 😂💦☔
