I have been using the method to stop thinking before going to sleep for a long time now. it may sound stupid but it works. I list different words alphabetically, from a different category every night. For example: car brands, flower names, non popular european cities etc. The more difficult the better. Instead of thinking about life and problems, I think about the name of a flower starting with a strange letter and I don't even know when I fall asleep. As a constant overthinker I sugest trying this method :)

I love how honest you are in all your videos. I too haven’t been sleeping great since finishing my school semester and I’ve been feeling a bit bad about not being on top of my sleep since I know its important. Seeing this video was such a nice gentle push to wanting to work at it again even if all that’s changing is my mindset and being kind to myself.
You always approach your videos so genuinely and in this one you could have easily said “here’s how to get better sleep like me and why it works” maybe plug a few products which is fine but you came at it from the perspective of “let’s talk openly and honestly about this, this is personally what I experience and what I do to help me but I also understand that sometimes things don’t go as planned and might not work how you want and that’s okay” which I resonated with. The video concept as a whole seemed to come from you wanting to share your perspective and help others and I feel like that comes you being so in touch with yourself.
Including that detail at the end of the video saying that “despite everything you did to help you sleep yet you didn’t fall asleep until much later and that it’s okay” was what compelled me to write this comment. To me, it really showed those intentions, honesty and vulnerability you bring.
You’re doing amazing, such a great video! 💕

I like to think of the red/orange lights as 'the sunset' - so like my prehistoric brain associates these colours with nighttime. Also OMG yes I HAVE to listen to Stephen Fry's HP every night hahaha. I love how we're all experiencing listening to it again to send us to sleep as adults ❤ I always find if I haven't exercised (as in, even just a walk) that day, I won't sleep well. I do have ADHD though and so I struggle with my circadian rhythm every dang day

I have a similar experience with insomnia, mine is partially adhd brain being unable to shut off and anxiety brain escalating things. I've found running through something mentally demanding in my head really helps me. I've picked up guitar recently so I go through the different notes and fingerings of a song in my head, or sometimes I choose a topic and pretend to give a presentation on it in my head. It keeps my brain occupied enough to let my body relax but isn't so mentally demanding that it gets me energized or worked up. Doing a 15 minute full body stretching routine right before bed helps me a lot too! I've also stopped consuming any content in bed. No TV, no instagram, no books (this would be fine for most people but I read until dawn), bed is only for sleep, which has seemed to allow me to get in the sleep mindset quicker.

Omg I’ve been having trouble sleeping ever since I started taking anxiety medication which is frustrating bc it helps my anxiety but for some reason it keeps me awake at night. I’ve been trying to get into a routine so my body knows it’s time to sleep. I also started taking magnesium glycinate before bed and it definitely helps me fell asleep. I just have trouble with waking up in the middle of the night. I agree that trying to be more mindful during the day and let my thoughts for way before my head hits the pillow would probably help. But I feel you girl it’s hard! Sending you goodness

I'm almost 50, and it's taken me this long to figure out my insomnia. I really struggled in my 20s and 30s to be productive against chronic insomnia. I have night terrors as an adult, which sucks, and my vivid dreaming when it is not a nightmare can be very exhausting. These types of things will reinforce and exacerbate insomnia. I'm frustrated to hear that people mock you for talking about how bothersome insomnia can be, but don't feel you have to defend yourself - it's impossible to understand if it isn't happening to you, and there's nothing to defend. What works for people is different, but what works for me is the exact opposite of most advice - I stay up late and exhaust my brain with videos or writing, then hit the bed when I'm barely keeping my eyes open. It helps me skip the "bedtime anxiety" loop of being scared that I am going to have a nightmare or exhausting dream that keeps me awake the more I think of it. When I live alone, I get very physically active just before bed and it's glorious, but that doesn't work when my partner is sleeping in the other room and I need to be quiet. Additionally, I play three solitaire games when I'm in bed and I'm usually dropping off before the last one. Exactly opposite of all advice I have ever received, and believe me I've tried everything, to the point where I'm sobbing at 2am because none of it is working. :D Good luck, I hope you find your secret recipe.

Oof, trouble with sleep is so frustrating because it bleeds into everything else.
A method I’ve found super helpful (that is actually similar to Ethan’s suggestion) when I’m lying in bed awake when I shouldn’t be is body mapping. So you start at your toes and fully focus on relaxing them, the soles of your feet, ankles, calves, thighs butt, stomach and back, fingers, forearms, etc. moving up your entire body. Just really taking 15-20 seconds to truly focus on relaxing the muscles and bones and it tends to work really well. I usually am asleep by the time I get to my back. I find it helps me concentrate my thoughts on the sole purpose of letting go.

I have experienced insomnia a few times. A couple years ago I experienced that horrible tiredness and I just couldn’t get to sleep. What doesn’t help me is being a night owl since I was little and having anxiety as well. I want a better sleep schedule and to be consistent but nope. Thank you for talking about it I don’t feel so alone lol. And yes in Colorado US it’s dark by like 4:30-5 pm 😩

Hey😊 two things you could try. Get a fan for your bedroom. One that has a misting feature. Then you get a cool breeze, cold mist, and you can put an essential oil in the water if you like. The second thing is that it seems like you can't spend any time without some stimulation (washing dishes and watching a show). You brain isn't able to process things because you aren't letting it rest. Maybe pick a task you can do without playing a show, listening to music or a podcast. Give your brain some quiet so it can figure things out. ❤

Thank you for this, I’m going to try the red light and going to order a snuggly stuffed animal too. I’ve been struggling with overthinking but it due to my father passing away, so I just think about that a lot. I usually don't have trouble sleeping, but whenever I get worried about having to sleep, I can't do it. Mostly when I know I have to wake up really early the next day. My life style allows me to sleep until 9 am! so anything earlier than that, which lotsof things are, worry me and I can't sleep well. if I have to be somewhere or do something or travel, or anything, I won't sleep. I finally cave in and bought melatonin pills, but I have to take at least 12 grams for it to work, even when the box says take one to two pills (each are 3 grams). I also covered one of my brigthest laps with a makeshift shade to have a lamps thats lower in brigthness, because I like bright lights, so I turn up all three lamps I have in my room at nights, but then when I want to induce sleep, even the lowest in light is too bright. The lampshade helps with that.

I do suffer from insomnia, my mind just goes nuts at night thinking of crazy situations and problems and how I need to solve them. I have had moderate success with a few things. Firstly, some form of meditation in bed to slow the mind. Sometimes I count. Sometimes I lightly pinch the bridge of my nose, focus hard on that point where my fingers are and breathe deeply in and out. There are some sound apps of rain etc that help me but keep my husband awake.
Secondly, no alcohol before bed. I don’t drink any caffeine after lunch. Don’t eat after 6 or 7 pm.
Have a bath or shower and put nice comfy pjs on.
Don’t get too hot in bed. I like to sleep with a fan on me. Again, my husband doesn’t like it but 🤷‍♀️
Yes, I agree, no phone or screen in the bedroom. Read a book before sleeping. Diffuse lavender oil or spray some lavender oil on your pillow.
    Good luck, sweet dreams 💤
