    Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul and this one's for the kids...and ahem Adults...who spent Christmas Disney's latest movie Soul.
    Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down the film's ending and the true meaning behind it.
    If you enjoy the video then please hit the thumbs up button and make sure you subscribe to the channel for videos like this each and every day.
    Now the movie itself follows Joe Gardner a music teacher who suffers a critical injury before getting his big break.
    Before you can say have you been in an accident that wasn't your fault, Joe is transported to the Soul world which is where spirits arrive at before heading into the great beyond.
    Due to having unfinished business on Earth, Joe breaks out of this purgatory between worlds and lands in the Great Before which is where souls are given their personalities before being born. Posing as a Mentor in order to not be sent back, he's assigned to a problem soul named 22 who's doesn't want to be born because...well she's probably seen 2020.
    In order to journey back to Earth, these young souls must fill up a sort of travel badge that fills up with personality traits and the pair agree to make a deal to fill it up so that Joe can take it and return.
    There's a scene in which there's a tonne of Easter Eggs and we can also see the Balloon from Up as well as the Planet Pizza Truck which has appeared in every Pixar movie. There's also the infamous lamp that makes up their logo and the hall of everything is filled to the brim.
    You may also remember that there was a Pizza rat spotted in New York a couple of years ago and this even makes an appearance in the movie.
    2319 also appears as a subway train number and this was the same code that was used in Monsters Inc to say that a sock has entered the world
    Now soul becomes somewhat of a body swap film with the pair actually making it to earth but Joe lands in a cat whereas 22 takes over their body.
    Soul is very much about finding the beauty in life and we see as 22 experiences things on Earth such as eating Pizza for the first time, having a subway blow the wind up through, seeing happy families and so on.
    The movie kinda goes back and forth with 22 and Joe going on a journey as he tries to get back to his body so that he can perform at the gig and make it to his big break.
    However the movie also allows 22 to come to the understanding that there is good in the world and that she will have a reason to live.

    I think the message of the movie is that there's no "meaning of life" or "purpose", but rather life itself is simply meant to be lived, enjoying the little things and being grateful for what you already have. Interesting movie!! :)

      I don’t know that i agree with that completely. The movie definitely admits that there is some form of purpose in peoples’ lives, but it wants to show that there’s more to it aswell. It says that if one doesn’t have a purpose, then they have no direction or meaning, but if they get too focused on that one thing, then it becomes too structured and centered on one thing.

      @@eldritchpumpkinghost2968 It may be silly, and life may have no inherent meaning, but that doesn´t really change the fact that humans have always looked for meaning. Whether one looks at old religious text or old stories, meaning has always been an integral part of human life. Hedonism and only living for happiness is quite a bad philosophy to live by, and it doesn´t really make much sense evolutionarily. I mean just imagine if human beings were okay with just being content and happy, we would have died out ages ago. It's our need for more and our need for improvement that has allowed us to survive, and that is meaningful to people, to strive for something. which means that the genes that craved meaning, were the ones that survived, and voila, here we are.

    My personal theory is that Joe accepted the job of teaching kids, and maybe even found a way to do some jazz gigs on the side. There are a number of possibilities as to how he could meet 22, but I like the idea of her becoming a student of his.
    Also Soul really hit home for me because I really relate to Joe. I've been under the impression that without my artistic pursuits and dreams, I have no drive in life. I'm a 20-year old short fiction author and right before I saw Soul I realized that I sort of live in my stories. Sometimes I try to escape to these stories I write. And when a story doesn't pan out (which has happened a lot this year), I get frustrated and even kind of depressed. Anyway, this movie has shown me that there's more to life than my stories or any of my other pursuits. I've often put my stories above living life and it's unhealthy.
    This movie gets a 10/10 from me. Pete Docter is one of my favorite storytellers alongside George Lucas, Dave Filoni, and Jon Favreau.

    • @righteousfish6385
      @righteousfish6385 3 роки тому +91

      @@irvinguzman4154 An interpretation for that story is that the young fish’s obsession with finding the ocean had blinded it to what it really was. He had an unrealistic expectation for what he was looking for, and because of that, he was unable to see that where he was (in the ocean) is exactly what he had been wanting all along. The older fish was able to understand the difference between water and the ocean, probably because of his age and experience.

    • @VeggieBoi-rt6qm
      @VeggieBoi-rt6qm 3 роки тому +15

      No you got it backwards
      The idea is that the young fish is not looking for water, water is everywhere, he's looking for THE ocean. Not just water. But schools of fish, coral reefs, aquatic flora, and other beatiful underwater things. He's looking for the hidden beauty all around him.
      This works better than being the old fish because in soul, the main guy (I forgot his name lol) is where he wants to be, but he's not feeling the grandeur of it. He finally made it to water, but he's not experiencing the ocean.
      Whearas if you where to apply it your way, he is looking for too much in life and should stop trying to be better, wich defenitely doesn't apply to the movie

    • @helloalexandraa
      @helloalexandraa 3 роки тому +94

      @@VeggieBoi-rt6qm nope. Joe (up until that moment) is very much the YOUNG fish, blinded by his desire for “more” to life, instead of living the life that already exists around him.
      You have to remember this quote is in context of Joe’s conversation with Dorothea Williams, who is a master and veteran of their craft. SHE is the old fish reminding Joe that they’ve made it to “The Ocean”. But while Dorothea is THRILLED to have had a performance that only happens one in a hundred times, Joe can’t seem to let go of the feeling he had chased up until then. He finally made it to “The Ocean”, but all it feels like is water.
      The way the young fish points out that he’s surrounded by “just water” is also the EXACT same way Joe shuts down 22 for enjoying “just regular old living” instead of wanting a more “meaningful” spark...
      The moral of the story (with both the fish AND Soul) isn’t about settling for less - it’s that life without “purpose” STILL has meaning. And that’s why Joe continues on with his second chance at life despite having already fulfilled what he thought was his “purpose”. The difference between The Ocean and just water is that you know you’re in it.

    Yet another gem from Pixar. Of all their films this one hit home for me the most. A year ago I retired from a 35 year career in IT. Worked that I loved but there was something missing, because I was on call 24/7 running a server farm, it was difficult to live each day without the pressures and needs of the others on that resource. Last year at this time that all came to an end abruptly as my retirement came as the company also was being acquired and my position eliminated. Talk about timing. I thought fine, I will travel and be free and then Covid. Working as a musician before my career in IT, I began playing again and discovered these apps and internet servers one can connect to and jam music with others all over the planet. As my chops began to return and I started writing music again, some with the others I met on this jam servers and yep, I go to the zone place frequently. Being over 65 and looking at a 50/50 chance if I get covid I have been unsure what my future options will be but I am living and loving it. Bravo Pixar what a creative team they cultivate! Keep up the good work here!

    this movie seriously has a beautiful message and was really moving. i also really enjoyed how the trailers for the film didn’t give the plot away and made it seem like it was more about his music career, but in the end it was all about enjoying everything in life and i found this to be really inspiring, especially with everything that has been going on in the world for the past year.

    Pixar always delivers. With this movie "Soul" they definitely raised the bar! Not your average animation children movie. This was definitely an eye opener for many of us when we ask the question "what is our purpose in life" and it wasn't a complex answer either. It was all of the little things. Great movie, I ended up here cause I still wanted a breakdown of the film. And you guys did great! Thank you!
