Hi loves! Today I’m sharing my “Control Journal” - which is a key component of the FlyLady housekeeping system that I highly recommend! Obviously, I’m using this system now in our small L.A. apartment, but I’ve also used it with great success in our 4-bedroom house before we downsized. I’ve also used this system both as a work-from-homer and a 9-to-5-er, so I know it can be molded to accommodate a lot of different lifestyles!

My husband and I are retired so my time is not limited for housekeeping and organization. You have shown a very good use of the FL Journal. I discovered Fly Lady in 2007. Most of my house has been decluttered using her principles and my housekeeping and organization skills have improved 200%! I created the binder but never really used it. I followed it online on the most part. I am now at a place where everything has a place and it better be in it’s place! When I walk through my house, I pick up things and put them back in place as I go. My husband has even developed good habits about picking up after himself! Fly Lady is an excellent source for helping building and maintaining good habits for your life!!

I am there too, Kristina, attempting to purge 20 years of stuff, in 15 minutes a day with a clutter accountability partner - we only encourage - no criticism, celebrating together each thing carried out the door. It seems overwheming. I don't have my journal together, been on the back burner for a while, but I have tried to follow some of FlyLady's routines, and those by her utube champions. Making a notebook of just lined paper and scribbled down plans and notes is genious. I can now just start it without it being perfect and it will morph into what is needed to support me and my household. Thank you for permission to start it ugly and giving me direction as to what works. You're right - pretty can come along later, very few things start out perfect, and they don't get done waiting for the perfect time, the right supplies, and all the data to be collected. Thank you!
I think this video was the first time that I heard about the Flylady! I'm re-watching this for the 2nd or 3rd time, as I finally decided to read, "Sink Reflections". And I'm finally taking some time to build my own control journal! I'm so freakin' excited that it's starting to come together! It's finally making sense! Thanks Charlotte! xoxo

Thanks for doing this! I have watched this video about 5 times now. I keep pausing it to write down what you have in yours and have been working on creating mine and tweaking it for my life. I also love that you talked about Nate helping too! My husband is a clean freak (I am NOT) and as I was explaining this to him, he asked, "Is this something I can help with too?" I smiled and said, "YUP! I will explain it once it is set up and I am ready to go."

I have always loved the FlyLady! I am reading her book, Sink Reflection, for 50th time! I always struggle with the zone cleaning but I'm still trying. I'm old enough to be your Mom, so it's great to have the younger generation following this and loving their home. I'm thinking you and I are big time homebodies.... I just got my FlyLady starter kit in the mail today. As a single person, I'm in over my head with this stuff. I am ready to shine my sink and get going with this system. I love how you are using the dry erase markers and think I'll do the same with my control journal.

Pink is definitely not my favorite color, but that binder is AMAZING! I always end up adding too much to my binder and getting overwhelmed.
I'm sure that I'm very late to your channel, but I find your approach very refreshing! I have to admit that I am sort of a perfectionist with my journals. I don't think that I'm super, super perfectionistic, but I just like things to look neat. I work 48-60 hours a week and that's why I'm struggling. 12 hour shifts are no fun, but you have shared some awesome ideas.

The first time I tried Fly Lady it seemed so overwhelming. I like how you broke it done to fit your lifestyle. That is definitely doable for me. And, I love binders, keep page protectors in, and it has been so irritating because the dividers were smaller. I put a few of your items on my Amazon wishlist.

Feel the same. I'm just starting but it took days just to do living room, it was that overwhelming to me.
I'm the same! I did Flylady years ago and many things have stuck (terms mostly like "swish and swipe" etc... but something always derailed me. I think upon reflection it was the perfectionist in me. I'm slowly coming around now and seeing the value of routine and structure - (rebel at heart) and overcoming my hoarding ways. Slow and steady. Good luck!
I make meal plans for a week, label week 1, 2, etc.-then switch out the weeks, i repeat many items, i list the vegetables, then you know what you must buy, it’s running your kitchen like a restaurant, then you as the chef execute the plan, I will chop extra onions etc from one day to the next, you can chop an onion and take from that supply through the week, noodles will last a few days, so you can boil more than one batch...but with a meal prep schedule you won’t really need it. I would schedule an eat out night, and new meal night so I could insert a new recipe. You just keep creating new combos, mine change with the weather, more hearty meals with cold weather. It helps me have ingredients on hand. I had a cooking class in high school, i noticed how fun it was to have supplies in the pantry. My kids are grown now, but during the crazy schedule years meal planning gave me energy, dreaming it up at 3 or 4:00 everyday is exhausting. There’s no limit to how many weeks you could have, put them in plastic sheet protectors and put your weeks in a notebook.

OMG I love your control journal. I’ve been researching about the fly lady method and I believe it will help me a lot with my big house. However, I was overwhelmed by how I was going to write down and organize my week and also try to understand the zones etc.

i have known of Fly lady for several years and used to get emails daily but since i've moved in with daughter i no longer need them as i just focus on my room and help with a few specific chores. i have gone back to using 3 x 5 cards as promoted by the "Sidetracked Home Executives" (SHE). it is where the Fly lady got some of her ideas from. the sisters have books for cleaning, kitchen, and "Happiness File" which is now what i concentrate since i homeschool grand daughter and deal with health changes as i grow older (60+). i recommend both! the books are no longer in print (look at 2nd hand stores to find!) but they are fun reading and i re-read them when i need a "pick me up" :)
Just committing to doing this system as a family! We have a toddler and a baby on the way, so I can't wait to get our house back under control.

I just ordered her books on Amazon and everything I need to make my own journal. My life has been in complete chaos and I feel so overwhelmed that I have trouble getting out of bed. I got hooked on the FlyLady from Diane in Denmark, Happy I found someone as inspirational as she is. Love your Flight Journal and I too can’t just be total messy in mine. Love your laminated sheet ( don’t know why I didn’t think of that when I got my laminator) and that cube timer. New sub can’t wait to see more.

Just saw this in my recommendations and had to watch it! I thought the fly lady technique sounded familiar. Back in high school I remember coming across it and trying it out but over the years I had forgotten. Now I’m living by myself and been struggling with daily chores so might give it another go! I haven't read this book but I've just created a "home management" planner myself. As a fellow planner girl, I love it! And I will admit-- I absolutely plan to get the GM for mine! I currently have a MM for my personal, always with me planner and a PM for a bit of a wallet/spending register. I have an A5 binder from Michael's that I am using for my home planner now and in just a week my level of efficiency has nearly brought me to tears! I loved this video!

Thank you for sharing - you gave me some great ideas - I love the idea of the checkmark box beside each task! I put my routines into a page protector and check them off with a dry erase marker, too. I don't have to laminate them that way. I love your quote on the back of your journal too - thank you!

Hi! I'm a new subscriber and I'm loving your videos! I've heard of the flylady before but never tried her method. I love how you explained everything and you made me want to try! I love how you said "we make things seem harder in our head and it's not that hard". This is my main problem with procrastination. I keep putting things off because they seem hard at the moment or it seems like they will take so much time. When I'm almost drowning in clothes everywhere in my room and I just have to do it...i realise it wasn't that hard and it didn't take as much time as I thought! That happens with everything, I'm a huge procrastinator. I'll try to remember what you said and say it to myself every time I start to make an excuse not to do something. Thank you!!!
Oh, my gosh - you *cannot* believe how much time I've wasted trying to find tabbed pages that are big enough to read what I write that will also show when I put a page in a protective cover! You're my hero! Love your videos - keep them coming. I have ME/CFS so your informational videos with links, and printout are so valuable to me. Thanks for letting us see your tidy home. It looks very peaceful. It's inspiring me to let go of unneeded things that are preventing me from having a peaceful sanctuary. (On a mildly related note to the video: I didn't know the FLYLADY lives in Western N.C. until she was on a 2 lane road we were both on with a 55 mph speed limit. Her erratic driving got my attention and then I noticed her license plate: FLYLADY! Clean like her, yes, but please don't drive like her! YIKES!)

I found the flylady 13 years ago and I have kept up with emails but I have never put eveything into place because it just seemed so overwhelming. Thank you so much for sharing your routine. It is easier to understand for me now.

Wow, this is exactly the type of system I thought to create before I ever heard about the fllylady or this system. But I kept putting it off because I thought it might be silly or a waste of time. I'm very impressed with your Control Journal. I don't know if the meal planning is normally part of it, but that's brilliant. I'm pretty sure I'll be making one eventually. Right now the things I do on a semi regular schedule would fit on a pot-it note. Thanks for sharing.
Charlotte, I would LOVE to see some Clean With Me videos! I also love FlyLady and have followed her for years! My Control Journal is inside of a Recollections brand personal sized holographic planner! My reasoning is: it's wipeable; it's the same size as my Kate Spade planner, so I can easily transfer notes; it's still nice and compact; inserts are readily available. It works for me. However, I am definitely following your advice to laminate my lists! Also, we use the Erin Condren wet erase markers because they won't smudge until you wipe them (I recommend because the colors are pretty!). TFS I love your system!!

And although I don’t yet have my own control journal, I use her app & love checking off what I’ve accomplished too. Her program is such a blessing. I’ll be sure to check out your other videos. Super impressed with you & your Control Binder! I’ve heard of FlyLady, watched my 1st video about an hour ago & realized she has a full system. Thankfully I chose your vid (1-ur adorable 2-pink knows pink😉) to help me understand & you certainly did not disappoint! First time I heard about the Flylady method was like 3 years ago I think. Since than I moved out of my parents home but now I'll move in with my bf so I really want to incorporate this into my planner. Thanks so much for breaking it down so it's simple and easy to understand.

Just wanted to say your channel is my favorite and I have been looking for like ever to find a water bottle that I love and won’t spill in my purse and I add propel to and shake it and it won’t leak all over the place and won’t condensate and I want to thank for turning me onto the simple modern water bottle I bought one and bought the straw lid and I absolutely loved them soooooooooo much I now have 4 of them. 11/2/20 - I loved seeing how you use your Control Journal. I've been "Fly-ing" since there was a system called S.H.E. cards (Sidetracked Home Executive.) Fly Lady even tips her hat to the SHE Sisters. Well, my kids are grown (though they still live here!) so I moved off the 3x5" cards to a Control Journal. But guess what? I don't much USE it as intended! Your video helped me to see that a new/different arrangement in the CJ will lead me to actually use it. Over two decades I have seen my FLY practices ebb and flow, depending on what's happening with my family. We are currently just before the holidays. My house looks only "fair' right now, but can look GREAT in one week. One more note: I love how FlyLady and you build self care into the routines. TBH this is the first thing that falls by the wayside for me. So I am excited to renew my CJ, include self care and get rolling anew! Thank you thank you thank you!

I too have tried the FlyLady but felt so overwhelmed, but after watching your video and how you explain everything I am sure I can do this too. Ok now I have to make a control journal!!!😁 To tell you a little about my life right now I recently signed up for a personal trainer also I recently reconnected with my extended family members (long story) and I work full time 9-5... I’ve been finding that I feel like I run out of time!! To help I just bought an Apple Watch cause I hear it helps with reminders and health... but I find with my busy schedule sometimes my house cleaning gets neglected 😩 not that it’s gross or anything I just find I get overwhelmed or I have to use a full Saturday or Sunday to clean (when those should be my “fun” days or “get ready for the week” days)... I will try to incorporate this system and see if it helps... as always THANKS FOR SHARING😊😊

You’re so adorable! This was the first video that I’ve watched of yours. Years ago when Fly Lady was new I made my Control Binder with a Hello Kitty fun binder. Now it’s been forever and want to do it all over again. Of course, we’d want something fun & cute! I think that helps with the motivation. I may use my Hello Kitty one again because it’s in perfect condition still. I don’t know, I’m a fan of Belle (because she’s a book girl), so maybe a yellow one with Disney font. I love how yours turned out. You go Girl!!
