- In today’s episode we are going to examine closely on Borei Class Submarines and trying to answer the following inquiry, are they actually the Backbone of the Russian Deterrence?
As we know that the Soviet Union entrusted the Russian Federation with a sizable submarine force. This force had been the backbone of the Soviet Navy since the end of World War II. Submarines became even more essential in the Soviet Navy once nuclear propulsion and nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) were available. Moreover, the Russian economy has changed drastically since 1991. As a result of this, the Russian submarine force has been seriously impacted. The Soviet Navy's incredible production rates have slowed, as has the economy's poor performance, resulting in wage deficits, reduced operational pace, and considerable difficulty in disposing of retired nuclear-powered submarines. For the record, the Russian fleet consists of 217 various types of warships and 69 submarines, 45 of which are nuclear-powered. Russia's shipbuilding capacity system has started to demonstrate progressive trend in the production of numerous types of warships, including the "Yasen" and "Borei" class submarines, which are outfitted with the most advanced equipment.

The Borei class submarine will be the naval mainstay of the Russian nuclear triad. As the Russian Navy decommissions their legacy Soviet systems the Boreis will slowly supplement and eventually replace the Soviet era subs. Russia prefers land based ICBMs as the main force of the Russian nuclear forces.
They also have nuclear torpedos for tsunami like events... ICBMs only used on the big theater for Deterrence

0:28 what if you could make a deadly anti-submarine cruise "missile" that looked just like that bird....only much, much, larger. Large enough to carry a warhead big enough to penetrate the hull of an enemy ship. I would imagine that a drone missile that looked like a bird could get pretty close in broad daylight before they realized how big it was. By then it would be too late.
they can fire from 5-6000 km away And they usually sail underwater i guess

You forgot to mention how many problems have Russian Navy with subs, Losharik and Kursk and many which is not known by public.

This subs maybe is an enemy for themselves rather than USA.
Neither of Russia's new nuclear submarines the Borei Class nor the Yasen class submarines have ever suffered any type of failures or problems. Also you mention Kursk but forget to mention the USS Thresher and USS Scorpion nuclear sub disasters. Losharik sub incident is not classified as a disaster because the submarine fire was put out and the submarine was rescued. Russian submarines are some of the most quiet and advanced in the world. The American navy has also suffered its own fair share of disasters at sea LOL

If you just googlelize military subs accidents, all the crown(s) is take by Russian. Them are very very un-lucky, not by the poorest crews trained but the lack of propely maintenance and gross creepy amirality which send them to death.

But if you want to know the USS Thresher which was said to be the most advanced sub at the time of its sinking lost 129 sailors beating Kursk's number of 118. Thats the largest loss of life on a nuclear sub ever OF ALL TIME. So America definitely takes the "crown" in that. Losharik lost 14 sailors in 2019 fire incident but you also forget about the USS John McCain Modern Destroyer that lost 10 sailors in 2017, USS Forrestal lost 134 sailors in 1967(Largest non-combat fatal naval accident in modern history). There are many more US naval disasters at sea. So i think Comrade Putin's Naval Fleet is all good. But thanks for the concern anyways.
