These had to be the tip of the iceberg, its doesn't sound real that the deepest sub was made during the cold war. Obviously there is deeper submarine that's still classified.
@@kinster02 No, I would put the real depth as twice the published figures. But no one has returned back alive to tell how deep a submarine really went before it got crushed :))))
Where the chief ties a clothesline tightly inside and it gets looser the deeper you go lol 😂, on a side note Seawolf takes roughly , no less than 47 orca adult orca skins to cover entire vessel
Keep in mind that "test depth" is deceiving. The builders design them to withstand a certain pressure for a set amount of time, yet many Kriegsmarine Uboat captains in the Atlantic reported exceeding even the estimated crush depth of their submarines on several occasions without the pressure hulls failing while evading depth charges from overhead destroyers. The true combat diving capabilities of all military subs in service is absolutely classified. Who in their right mind would develop something that is supposed to be a step ahead of their rivals and then make that information public? Nobody.
Many Kriegsmarine captains also were crushed by the deep waters, so they had no chance to report anything. It always depends on condition of the hull. Sometimes it survived few deep dives and then it failed surprisingly during next attempt.
All true. Test depth is merely the maximum depth a submarine can operate safely ALL THE TIME, assuming the pressure hull, hull valves and anything else that communicates with the surrounding water was not damaged in some way. A submarine can go much deeper than it's rated test depth, but skippers for obvious reasons do not do that lightly. In combat though they take risks that they would not take in peacetime, even though submarines in general always operate on a war footing. One only see photos of the mangled wreckage of the U.S.S Thresher and Scorpion to see the fate that awaits any submarine that falls below collapse depth. U-boats during WW-2 were built to operate to about 500 feet, but descended to 1,000 feet to evade co-ordinated depth charge attacks from a hunter-killer group above. A depth charge exploding near the hull was always fatal.
@@georgekraus9357 Something like that happened in the 90's, I believe. The US only claimed 400' on its subs, then some Admiral was giving a briefing to the news and let slip that they were at 800'...ooops.
I was a Sonar Tech aboard the USS Henry M. Jackson SSBN 730...A Trident submarine...This popped up recommended by UA-cam. I only began watching because, as many others have commented, the Test and Crush depths of at least a U.S. Navy submarine are classified. Granted, of the 3 levels of classified material, Confidential, Secret and Top Secret, test depth of a boat is merely Confidential, and is not difficult to discern. But for a UA-cam poster to claim to have such knowledge as this for 10 different military submarines is ludicrous.
Not to mention that since I know exactly what the Test and Crush depths of a Trident submarine are, that the Ohio class is not mentioned in this list, as it would be by the depths indicated by the poster of the video, merely proves just how inaccurate it is
ex-ops room radar operator: we got the sonar data along with EW input to make the sit-plot. A copy of Jane's Fighting Ships was always there, now all on-line. The published data of ships are the manufactures for cruising operation. Actual capability in speed and depth in fighting mode is at the maximum of +/- specifications and the nerve of the captain. Those specs are always somewhat unknown. Add 10% for temporary extreme performance is the usual assumption.
When out to sea, we always remember this. Two things- #1. The fire department will never get to you fast enough to help, no matter the situation. #2. The furthest you will ever be from land is only a little over seven miles, dry land is another consideration.
True but those numbers are probably close to actual. Engineers can make good estimates based on what they know about the materials used and other facts about the designs which can't realistically be kept secret.
Depth capability is greatly overrated. It may help get under a thermocline to bounce the sound. But the depth capability means the sub is able to withstand explosive pressure from depth charges. The important factor is quietness. If they can't hear you they can't find you.
Every boat is as good as it's welds, and every boat, same class or not, has a unique crush depth. It isn't unusual for a submarine to be capable of twice it's "test depth" Our boats back on the 30s and 40s would, in a pinch, go well beyond their rated depths.
One bad weld, one little drop of paint, the lives of the crew depend on millions of parts all working exactly as intended- which is why I could never feel comfortable on board a submarine during a dive. I like the sea but not being underneath it thank you 🫳
I’ve a BS in Chemistry 🧪. Knowing how hard Titanium is to work with - I’m impressed The Russkies were able to build an entire sub from the Element. It also has the advantage of being non-magnetic - making MAD detection almost impossible. The Akula Class also used a Liquid Sodium Cooled Reactor. This is great for achieving a compact reactor. However - Sodium reacts vigorously with water - even more so in a molten state. You’re trying to keep absolutely all water out - when you’re totally surrounded by it. The US has a hard time working with Titanium. When building The SR-71 - it was found even the trace amount of cadmium left behind by cadmium plated wrenches would cause bolts to fail. Tracing lines with Pentel Markers would leave behind trace amounts of ink - that sometimes had components that could cause welds to fail. Welds washed off with water during the summer tended to fail more often than those in winter - which had to do with amount of Chlorine in the water. So they switched to distilled water to rinse off parts.
Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. And terrorists (puppets of the Antichrist) who misinterpret verses, out of ignorance and political motivations, and take them out of historical context (just like radical atheists do by the way), don't help either. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. Salam (Peace) -----------

Maximum test, and crush depths are always classified. They may not even be revealed to the captains, or XOs as a matter of protocol. All classified operating documentation will probably only identify operating parameters that can be fully guaranteed by the builder. Given engineering safety factors, the ultimate limits may only be known by very few engineers, scientists, and senior naval staff. The most probable points of rupture would likely be at welded joints, hatch interfaces, and anywhere external objects need to penetrate the pressure hull; such as periscopes, and power transmission shafts.
Well the Captain and XO must have a number to go on to not exceed that number. If that is the maximum crush/test depth or not or a decided max depth is irrelevant as that number is the maximum depth the sub can operate in anyway. So that number that the captain gets is the maximum depth of the sub even if the sub itself would be able to handle more.
Right... And on my boat, we never told the Skipper where we kept the Trident C-4 missiles.... Protocol... Sheesh! I guarantee you that no US Navy Captain of a submarine has gone to sea ignorant of his boat's capabilities....
it's related. There are different ocean currents at different depths, forming layers, and sound is not always conductive from one layer to another, so to speak, due to differences in temperatures between them.
Nope... The Test and Crush depths of a Trident are only Confidential... The lowest of the 3 levels of Naval security classifications. Because those depths are not very difficult to discern if you have actually built your own submarines. Russia has built many subs. They are fully aware of the approximate realistic depths to which military submarines are capable... Because they have built their own... The ocean is the constant. Technology and metallurgy can only do so much against the pressure of the oceans. Regardless of nationality.... Take it from an old boomer squid. Those depths are NOT the hilarious 5000 or 10,000 meters these fools on here are claiming... So while the limits ARE classified, they are not highly classified
Yes, crush depth. Test depth is the maximum safe tested depth. Exact crush depth is a bit of an unknown. It's predicted based on calculations, but it's impossible to prove without, ya know, CRUSHING IT. And at close to crush depth, even small condition changes could result in the sub sustaining damage or crushing. Crush depth is usually another 30-50% deeper than test depth. In war, a sub commander could decide to go deeper than test depth to get away from hostiles, at increased risk of damage or crush.

'Test depth' has different meanings depending on the navy involved. Navies around the world define it anywhere between two-thirds to just one-half maximum design depth.
@@neilgriffiths6427 Accurate details are. But you can get a fair estimation of the actual design depth of the submarine by looking at the pressure rating of the steel used in its construction, plus the official test depth ratings for each navy. HY-80 for example, used in most western subs during the cold war, has a rating of about 550mts (the USS Thresher, built on this steel, had a test depth of 400 mts; now if we take the US Navy's two thirds test depth rating, that would mean that the design depth of the then Thresher-Class, was 600 mts, and Thresher herself imploded at around 730 mts). Cheers.

You have no idea the depth the Akula or Yasen or Seawolf can dive. Whatever source you got that from has no idea either. Most likely just guesses at what it might be. The US doesn't need to catch up with Russia in how deep a sub can go. The US has a huge advantage when it comes to how quiet a sub is and there is no better issue when it comes to subs than how quiet it is. To this day a Ohio class ballistic submarine has never been successfully tracked by a Russian or any other country sub. And the Ohip class subs have been around for several decades. When it comes to the Seawolfs and Virginia class subs, forget it they don't stand a chance in finding one of them outside of being extremely lucky. On the other hand Los Angeles class subs track and even follow Russian subs all over the place. Most of the time unnoticed. Once on station they move fairly slowly. Cavitation on the propeller would give away their position so the propeller turns very slowly. Most nuclear subs operate below the thermocline which varies depending on the location in the oceans.
The Chinese one I absolutely don't believe. They are a good two decades behind in noise abatement. Electric subs are very quiet ambush predators, they turn their diesel engines off. @@EricThompson1965 Maybe so but there were a few US commanders who wouldn't have minded having a few. And I don't think anyone disagreed about the noise they made. The original post was about how deep they allegedly went.
And this entire list is probably mostly wrong, for the simple fact, that any information on what depths these submarines can go, be it test, operational, or maximum depths, it's all classified, the public at large will never know. I'm willing to bet that even many of the crew on those subs don't know how deep their subs can dive, with information known only to a select few of the crew and officers.
LooseCannon did say some of the crew know and just because one might know how deep they are, it doesn't mean he or she knows how deep it can go. I agree with LooseCannon because this is a very closely guarded secret. A few on the sub may know but not many. Whoever made this list has no idea which subs dive deeper. Can't you tell by it's choice for second. A Chinese non nuclear sub. Please give me a break.
@Matthew Huszarik An LA class has a crew of around 120+. So they put in 100s of depth gages? Or do they all huddle around the one depth gage in the really big room subs always have? lol! Nah you dare one of those crew to take a picture and tweet it? Then you know for a fact. Then tell Kristian Saucier onboard the USS Alexandria to go inside the nuclear reactor room and make pics all around. When the FBI and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service show up at his door? Don't respond to his emails and just ghost his ass. Else you end up in jail too? ;-)
As a former US submariner, I would say that the only people that know how deep a submarine can really go are dead.
I suspect it may vary even between subs within class. Simply due to strains accumulated during service.
These had to be the tip of the iceberg, its doesn't sound real that the deepest sub was made during the cold war. Obviously there is deeper submarine that's still classified.

In WWII, a diving depth of U.S. subs was classified from Japan until one Congressman opened his mouth ....

So best subs would be constructed of a continuous material with as little welds as possible?
@@JD-re3cj I would imagine that they are using x-ray to ensure the quality of the welds.

But since actual max design depth is secret, so, really, is the test depth.
Well VaDrak looks like you are blowing smoke up everyone's ass. Think maybe your Russian. Before anybody says anything I know Sweden has probably the quitest sub in the world but it isn't nuclear. My point is when you have things like Stealth technology and have had it for 20+ years, and no one else still has it, how in the hell could the info have been stolen? Make absolutly no sense at all. That is just one of many examples of what I am talking about. Blow your smoke elsewhere VaDrak, nobody here is buying it.
Well like many here have been saying, information about how deep a sub can dive is highly classified information and nobody except those that are suppose to know, knows it. So if the US is a little behind, which I doubt, in how deep their subs can dive compared to the Russian subs I say who cares. No where near as important as being more quiet.
@@t74guard78 Yea you leave out the names of the operations where the US stole the technology, lol!
Project Azorian? US has stolen entire Russian submarines so they could reverse engineer and copy Russian technology?
Project Diamond? Project Have Doughnut? So we know for a fact the US stole every MIG ever built. And used Russian science and math to develop low radar cross sections for aircraft? Is that not what Lockheed tells us how they did it?
I agree makes no sense at all to leave the proof and facts throughout history out. Cos you would have to pretend you didn't steal the technology when all the US military looks like a copy of other countries stuff? lmao!

K-278 "Komsomolets": *weakling*
The Oscar and Sierra class subs when the USSR designed and built them in the Cold War they knew that they only way to survive was: speed and depth. They were so noisy you could hear them at miles away even if they were running silent and our boats were at flank lol. They didn’t improve much in class 2 either. Unfortunately they found out the hard way the 688I were just as fast and could dive almost as deep but much quieter. Many minor collisions occurred because of close encounters with the Russian boats and boomers by accident. Simply because the Russian Captains didn’t know the American boats were there. Unfortunate risks but things that never made the news and truth is none of those skippers wanted to start WW3 it was more about the job and egos lol.
@@billgere5293 Funny i seem to remember Alfa's diving too 4,000 Feet in the early 80's. And Honeywell made mark 50. Only had a Max depth of 1,900 feet. So the 688 could do nothing.

@@khxbunkhxp8010 yeah, specs give a test depth of 500m.
It amazes me how a naval vessel as large as this can ever be considered “silent”.
The nuclear subs are pretty damn quiet going 30+ knots if they are deep enough to avoid cavitation - but they will never be as quiet as a diesel electric.

@@barracuda7018 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa-class_submarine
The last Alfa was decommissioned and scraped in 1996 so they are no longer operational.
That was true, at the times when first alfa class went operational, most torpedoes top speed usually stays at 35 knots max, but shortly after the alfa class specs fully collected, also on one occasion, alfas were caught speeding at 40s knots, most NATO nations started to fielding 50s knot torpedoes, UK spearfish with 70 knots as well as mk 48 adcap at 65 knots as two examples.. With 600 meters of maximum target depth to boot.. If those coldwar specs/stories are to be used as a reference in the least..
@@barracuda7018 41 knots is indeed a joke, it was 43.7 knots at 97% output- they stopped there because everything started shaking rather unpleasantly. It was a twin reactor design fully titanium to make it as light as possible, its as close as you get to a truly racing submarine.
Nothing about it is estimated or speculative, they are painstakingly monitored and tracked. Alfa was very easy to track because it wasn't exactly a quiet submarine, but it was too fast to do anything about at the time.
They even considered liquid metal reactors to go even faster, but they went for the tried and true. It was disgustingly expensive.
