Say what you will about Chichi being annoying wife/mother, but she is an awesome wife. She waited all those years training and such to be Goku's wife. I used to think they didn't love each other and they married for the meme of it but as I get older I can see they love each other quite alot. There are evidences hidden throughout the series.
The final episodes of Dragon Ball is a few really cute episodes where they adventure together. I kind of wish they had done a little more of that at the beginning of Z.
I always defend Chi Chi, she's really just trying to hold her family together as a nomal family, but Goku and Gohan's wild natures and their insane lifestyle with the fate of the world constantly on their shoulders really just constantly upends that and makes it almost impossible to manage. She basically HAS to become a bit overbearing and forceful, because it's the only way she can match the craziness of their lives. Chi Chi is a very strong willed individual and frankly, I think her obsessive dedication to make their family unit work despite their ludicrous lifestyle making it near possible is something to respect. She has to go to extreme methods to be able to reign these two in. Any lesser woman couldn't possibly rise up to that challenge the way she always does. She's a very underrated character. One thing I don't think readers and viewers aren't always able to do is put themselves in her shoes or see things from her perspective... because Dragon Ball is a fighting shonen series so of course that's what the reader/viewer is always going to expect. Chi Chi is a character who, by her nature, tends to drive a wedge between Goku and all the battling and fate of the world stories that viewers are invested in, so they tend to take an unfair position against her. But from her point of view, she REALLY is just trying her best to try and keep her family together at all costs because she really does love her husband and her son.... it's just that their lives are a lot, and she is taking her responsibilities as a mother and a wife as dead-serious as she possibly can. She only tries her best to rise to the challenge every day rather than leave and abandon them. That has to count for a lot, in my opinion.
One thing you gotta hand it to for Chi Chi is that no matter HOW hard it ever gets, she won't just leave and abandon them for an easier life with someone else. She always has every opportunity to be unfaithful or give up and run out on them, and that's something she just won't do. She's loyal to them, no matter what.

Besides living off tournament money (that Goku would eventually be permanently banned from), Goku really didn't have much job prospects besides using his insane strength for like construction jobs. She saw this WAY AHEAD of time and wanted better for her son. Yes, her methods were insane and often pushed her son away, and you could say it made Gohan weaker, distracted him from training, etc. But now that he's an adult, he's got a good STABLE life and job for his own family for it. She could be irritating but damned if she was not a good mom.

To be fair, most of her annoying stuff are anime filler, they needed to extend the episodes to not pass the manga and her being an annoying bossy mom was a easy joke to write.
And Goku never wins against chi chi after this the rest of his life.

But.
That's not the case.
Chichi is strong -- and a bit bossy. She knows just what she wants and fought to get it. Besides being a good person and an old friend, she's fierce.
Saiyans *prefer strong women.* So, instead of "sorry, I can't", it's "okay! I'll marry you."
This is the same reason Vegeta reacted the way he did to Bulma's various advances.
He might not care about some dumb girl - but Bulma is the right mix of gutsy, demanding and capable.

It kind of passes the fandom by, but the fact that Chichi was that deep into the final rounds of the Budokai basically cements that she is/was the strongest woman on the entire planet most likely. Also her dad was super strong.
His Saiyan instincts kicked in and had a gut feeling that Chi-chi was the right pick.

I grew up with the hispanic dub, wich was mostly accurate to the Japanese version, so this differences were totally new to me. I still can't believe that thw dub made Bardock a scietific lol.

Seriously they should bring Worlds Martial Arts Chichi into more fighting games. I mean, she made it all the way there to the tournament proper, so she's a capable fighter.

Toriyama, may God have him, once said he had no idea how to write romance between two characters. If that is true, I suppose he was right, but at least he made work-arounds to it that the public could accept without eye-rolling. This, Kuririn and 18, Gohan and Videl, none had romance properly but we can understand all of it. Well Bulma and Vegeta is still weird imo.

LOL, it made more sense in the actual series. XD Goku had to ask his friends what exactly marriage even is and that it means he'll live with her forever, but then he ends up going through it anyway. :p

I find strange that Chi Chi stopped caring about fighting at the start of dragon ball Z she doesn't even want Gohan to do it...
Toriyama didn't really care about writing couples and romance, so he only did this with Goku because it was supposed to be the end of the story. Once he realized he had to continue the series after Goku was married, the only way he could think how to write it was to make it "funny", as a parody of married life, so he changed Chichi into the stereotypical "nagging wife".
Imo, it was a mistake given how long the story would go on for, but I guess he couldn't have known that by then.
She only cared for fighting to approach Goku, and she successfully married him. She trained Goten afterwards.

She goes through phases, she changed when Gohan was born because her priority became his life. After Goku's second death (lol) she also softened in that sense, and so Goten was raised in a way less strict way
It’s not that she stopped caring about fighting. It’s that she wants to protect her children. Almost no part of DBZ was a remotely safe for children environment. There’s a major difference between training your kids in martial arts and sending them off into constant deathmatches.

As explained by Toriyama, he is bad at writing romance. I remember reading this in regards to Dr Slumps's sloppy dating, marriage and later honeymoon. He got some advice from his editor at that time, but ends up just winging everything. It was in the tankoubon/book. Around the same time he was working on DB too. Goku and Gohan pretty much got instant marriage.
Man anime's know how to do marriage right but in real life it sucks. Also i think chi chi is the goat since she even stayed loyal to goku after being dead for 7 years.

5:19 In the anime, Goku says that aloud, then he says: "Sometimes my brain doesn't know what my mouth is saying. Good thing my heart does. Will you marry me?" Man, I got to hand it to Goku, for a guy who doesn't know what marriage is, he sure knows how to propose with style.
That line was in the English dub only, in Japanese it was the same dialogue as here.
In latin american dub, the lines are pretty much the same as the original Japanese ones. They're are almost 100% faithful to the original source.
Man, Chi Chi used to be such a fun character. Now she’s just an asian mom who’s used for jokes.
It still baffled me thag Toriyama made a heroine to be his MC's wife, and named her "tiddies". Lmao
Part of that is because Toriyama really liked his puns, and Chichi's name pulled double duty for that in Japanese context, since it can be used as a word for "father" (given at her introduction she was heavily tied to the Ox King as the significant character of that bit in the story) as well as a term for "Milk" or "Udder" (again on the Bovine theme, same as Bulma's family being named after undergarments).
Roshi actually does make a joke about her being named "Chi-Chi" while Bulma "has Chi-Chis" and such, but that's put more on him being the dirty old man trope compared to other languages where the dirtier meaning is the more immediate connotation. Japanese puns are pretty funny to look into if you get into a series originating from it like a lot of anime or video games.
The real version is much better....

Goku: I thought bride was something to eat.
Chi-chi: So that means you don't wanna marry me

There are many similar dialogues cut out..... I mean I know they have to limit it.... but come on, the most important parts has missing dialogue.... it's just.... eugh

@emamule23 Chichi? Wtf? It was Goku's worst decision, not hers. His life was perfectly fine before this. He did what he wanted, trained to become stronger, traveled wherever he wanted, hunted his own food, hanged out with his friends, etc. He didn't need this baggage woman nagging at him for the rest of his life just because SHE wanted to force her idea of a "normal life" on him.
Chichi was the one who was obsessed with him, and wanted to marry him because he was strong (that was the reason she fell for him). She knew he was like that, and even after realizing he didn't understand what he had promised, she still wanted to marry him. And for some reason she expected him to change into a completely different person after marriage, and to forget about doing the thing he loved to do (training) and become a "regular" husband instead.
Goku's friends were also at fault for not explaining everything to him either. "Marriage means you live together" was such a simplistic and dumb way to let their friend's happy and carefree life come to an end, just because they couldn't be arsed to warn him that marrying her meant he would have to stop living the way he wanted, because he would have to get a job.
So don't try to pin this on Goku please. I hate it when people do that BS, when he was the actual victim here. He was literally the only one there who DIDN'T have all the information, and was just trying to not go back on a promise. It was his friends' fault, and especially Chichi's, for trying to force this free spirit into a life that they KNEW he wasn't fit for.
So Chichi's "worst decision" my ass. She only ever cared about having a regular married life, even though she knew Goku was not "normal". Nothing else. She was just going to fade into "regular human obscurity". Goku was the literal god amongst men who gave up on HIS ideal life of freedom, just because he was too nice and no one cared to warn him about everything he would lose if he did.
