  • Is that brood disease or is that varroa mites?! They can look pretty similar so it is hard to truly tell. This is a question I see constantly in Facebook groups. So I hope this helps answer your questions as to what you are seeing. Bee worry friend, it is in fact now Varro smite season as we start preparing for winter!

It is definitely hard to see from this side of the screen, but are you sure that hive is not infected with EFB. It sure looks like it. But its hard to diagnose over video.

your a commercial beekeeper that is needing their bees to make a living. back yard beekeeping is a drastically different mindset. especially treatment free. we don't worry about a colony that dies to mites, or if EFB comes around, which rarely does, they usually take care if it on their own and I'll aide by reducing their size and giving them resources. ill usually kill that queen to get those genetics out my yard but moral of story, most TFB aren't spending money on bees, we work with feral and survivor stock, we have a breeding program to work toward genetics that aren't reliant on us to survive. I'm sure your probably thinking something about mite bombs and stuff like that but it's a tired argument and if we all worked towards better genetics, that wouldn't be a problem. but now we are stuck in this chemical merry go round because we made a decision 30 years ago to use chemicals instead of letting bees figure it out. And pretty much did it because of commercial beekeeping industry, which I can't argue with as I'm not in their shoes depending on it for my livelihood. it's tough and I hope we come out of it one day!

Agree . Some looks like sac brood . Ian what your thought on the mites not have enough food ? My thought would be the are eating on the fat body’s of ALL the bees . I don’t think the mite would ever run out of food .

Pete, you and I couldn’t be further apart. And… my comment was towards the diagnosis of the ailment, not her treatment philosophy. What disease do you see? Oh right, you don’t pay attention to such things.

@@handsburyhoneybees893 , those mites are in all they can eat buffet. Well, until they kill off their host! But that’s their strategy. Build up massive mite populations, bring the colony to its knees and then spread to countless other colonies while the nest is being robbed out.
Pete’s management (or non management) helps the mites along that line

You’re a Legend young lady and very informative, I am in Australia and Varroa has made it to our shores. It has not hit my state yet, but I gather it will get here eventually so I have been searching for people that have gone down the more natural method of trying to control varroa and I found you and I have subscribed and will be certainly trying the no or very low chemical treatment.
Would you suggest any thing to try before it gets here as a preventative, maybe if I can have something in the hive when the little mites get to my bees.
    Thank you for your knowledge.
    Len

I though mites going brood just before capped, then lay male first, female breeds with son and lays more females, then emerge after feeding on larvae. To me it looks like sac brood after being weakened by varroa mites and viruses.

I start hopguard in July. So nice to use. It's organic. I use 3 times every 2 weeks but you have tons if hives so pricey. I yse ia vape in early spring before brood is capped and in late fall before buttoning up for winter. Keeps mites low.

Interesting take. Just wondering how or if you keep mite free or at least a low mite count on most of your hives without treatments.

The one that looks like head was chewed off that looks pointless is sac brood. Bald brood still has head.
