Odyssey AC Evaporator Expansion Valve Replacement

- This video shows my experience changing out an expansion valve for a 2011 - 2017 Honda Odyssey that was having intermittent cooling problems. Both the high and low side freon pressure readings were incorrect causing the air conditioning to only blow cold for 5 minutes. See video links at the end of video for changing out AC compressor or electromagnetic clutch & pulley.
The flat port seals on the expansion valve are about $8 each OEM at Honda. ...and yes they are a pain in the rear to change out

Please check all your fuses and relays first. Feel free to leave a comment if you need help
Thanks for watching!
Nice, I have Pilot 2015 but some issue appeared in AC, as it starts to be working with less efficiency in the driver side, and after couple of weeks the other sides are became the same low efficiency then there is no cooling at all. I went to the agent of Honda in KSA they recomended to replace both evaporators (front & behind) along with expansion valve. Actually for me I am still not convenced about this solution. Do you think that with such AC behavour the only thing that might be damaged is the expansion valve?
I would strongly recommend replacing all your AC relays, and the electromagnetic clutch on the compressor. Our van was doing all sorts of strange things and that turned out to be the fix
@@JohnCalebWarren thanks alot for your prompt feedback. But one more question, do you think that if the issue is the relay and the electomagnetic clutch of compressor is leading leakage for the freon (Refrigerant gas). Because when this problem appeared I solve it temporary by refilling of refrigerant gas then takes about 4 months and the problem appears again.
Your kind support is highly appreciated.
It sounds like you have a slow leak of freon; That can cause the symptoms you described. I would replace the schrader valve for the low side line. That is a very common freon leak
The electromagnetic portion of the AC clutch on our van had an intermittent open (probably from age and heat). This caused it to work half the time, or for only 5 minutes & then quit.
Here is a video of replacing that electromagnetic portion of the clutch pulley with it still on the vehicle ua-cam.com/video/pN1t2hh9xtw/v-deo.html
Same problem it is a one day job thanks for the video 3 screws that's what I needed
Definitely check out the resistance through the electromagnetic compressor clutch. That's what the problem turned out to be after all. I had an intermittent open in the electromagnetic clutch
Thanks my friend
Nice clean motor.
Thank you!
Hey bud actually what does this a/c evaporator do my guy change the AC compressor. New one to three weeks is stop working. I took a back the compressor is not spinning. He said the AC evaporator has been replaced. That’s why it’s not getting power to that coil and the completed compressor.
Please tell us exactly what it was doing prior to the replacement. I have 2015 Odyssey. It blows fine but when it's pretty hot outside the ac temperature suddenly drops and fan speed drops. It even starts heating up. Recently took it to the dealer to empty and refill refrigerant including dye to find leaks. I'll be taking it back next week to check foe leaks.
Check your flap / blend door motors. Turns out I had one that was broke & it was allowing hot air into the air box while the a/c was. Took forever to figure this out. It was the blend motor that controls the hot to cold
i am currently working on a 2013. i think my evaporator core is leaking because im smelling ac oil/perhaps freon after a recharge, and then the freon is gone in the system. my question is this: how did you originally get the shroud off of the tubes going to the expansion valve? i know you cut the piece to slide it back in, but how did you originally get it off with the same problem?
There are about a half-dozen screws all around the outside. Most go through 3 to 4 inch tubular tunnels. If you pause the video you will see where the screw holes are
@@JohnCalebWarren thank you for your reply...what about the tubes to the expansion valve? is that somewhat easy to get the shroud off of those?
@@lilhoss1 I'm curretly working to replace the Evaporator. have you figured out how to remove the housing of the expansion valve?
@@toronto_mechanic yes. It was painful. Worst ever. I had to take a hot knife to cut it out of there!
@@toronto_mechanic hot knife. be careful not to start a fire.
Sometimes it's easier to take the entire dash out in one piece.... sometimes. That's how it is done at the factory, the entire one piece dash is put into the car and bolted in, not build one piece at a time. It's built in pieces someplace else before it gets to the car and installed one piece/unit.
I need tools.
