Thank you for the great comparison. being slightly ocd - I prefer the square as they do look more finished. but also enjoy rounds and they are also lovely. the math is as follows: 20x25cm = 500 cm total area. square is approx 16 drills per 1cm sq and round is approx 12.25 drills per 1cm sq. Square = 8,000 drills total vs Round = 6,125 total . just in case some one is curious about it. Thanks again Rachel ;-)
I have ordered my first diamond painting and it is a round drill. I.didn't know there was a difference between round and square and I got worried. But seeing these two I know i prefer more muted look so the round will make me very happy. This is like the difference between watercolor paintings versus acrylic. Thanks for the comparison !
It is good to start with round, and gain some experience and knowledge of tricks to make the painting better. As an experienced diamond painter, Ive done more than 30. The square is more challenging and can be frustrating at times. The frustration stems from crooked rows, caused by uneven pieces, and nubs. Diamond painting is definitely a get what you pay for craft. If you buy a cheap painting you get cheap. I prefer Diamond Dotz, Diamond Art Club and Dreamer Designs paintings. They are all high quality, poured glue, great drills, and the artwork is licensed giving the artists the money they deserve. They aLways have good sales, online and in craft stores.
Thank you for showing the differences, and for explaining to the best of your ability. Just because one doesn't know the technical terms doesn't mean one is not observant.
To me the square looks more vivid in color, but looks like im looking at 3d without the glasses... while the round is more muted it appears more cohesive
Thank you Rachel. I am newer to this craft and I found your explanation of the differences you get in the final outcome depending upon whether you used round or square to be very helpful. Up to this point, all I had known to consider is the gaps you get with round vs square. It is good to know that you need to go up in size (canvas) if you want as much detail/depth from round drills as you can get from a smaller canvas with square drills. Great video. Thanks again.
That's such an abstract image ! If I had not seen the printed image I would not have any idea what those were! I'd think I saw some leaves....maybe a butterfly on the square one. So to me this really shows 1 large DP is better than 2 small ! Especially if you are on a limited budget! get something you'll get some real satisfaction out of..great points throughout Rachel...another good video! thanks!
Thank you so much! Now I want to try this kind of project with snack size paintings just to see the difference. I know this is an older video but since I found your channel I’ve been binging your content. 😁
im late, but im just about finished with my second painting, which is a round drill painting. i have eyesight problems and am yet to get glasses, so round is so much easier because you dont have to be too exact! although square looks more finished, round is so much easier and beginner friendly. :)
Thank you for doing this comparison. I haven’t started diamond painting yet and it does help to see the difference. I might start with a round one and then graduate to the square ones.
I’m knew you this too. I’m almost done with my first one. I didn’t know the difference either. Mine came with round drills and I’m thinking I’ll like those better than the square. I will get a square one in the future just to see for myself which I like best. I’m really liking it! Good luck!
So interesting. I just did my first diamond painting (round partial drill) and now I'm waiting on another round and two square. Can't wait to see for myself the difference!! Thanks for the great video
Thank you Rachel :) But maybe the reason I like square is wierd? I just like doing the checkerboard pattern and then hear the clicking noise of the drills when you place them :P
I find squares more frustrating because a lot of mine pop. BUT I prefer it because its so much more satisfying and is so flush without gaps, I just find it more fun haha so I guess I'll deal with the popping drills.
Thank you for this comparison. I wondered what the differences were. It seems as though the round is more pixelated. You are right, the square drills have more depth and variety of shading. They appear to have the same edges and yet the round one seems larger and darker. I haven’t done a square drill, yet, but want to try it. Perhaps on the projects I want to display. Round will be for fun. I have become addicted this summer.
Thank you for doing this comparison. It’s a pretty picture. It is my opinion that the “square” looks clearer. But I must also admit I only do “square” diamond paintings. Thanks again!
You made a informative comparison between round and square diamond paintings. I'm on my second diamond painting. The quality of the materials really makes a difference. I still can't order from Diamond Art Club. They are always sold out!
Very cool to see a side by side comparison, thanks! I started with a few square drill ones, but am currently doing a round one and I like it as well. Kinda nice to be able to make it faster. I think I slightly prefer square. I watched one of your videos for tips before I started and your tip about the checkerboard pattern was great - I love that clicking sound too :)
It's a shame that the round painting had duller colors than the square painting to start with, because when you add in the resolution from the size of the diamonds, it makes a huge difference. It's too bad they didn't both have the exact same colors for a more fair comparison. I just ordered my first diamond paintings on Amazon and am excited to get started :-).
Wow, great video!! I didn’t know that they were different sized drills, it seems like it should be opposite of what it is. Very informative and interesting! Thanks for another great video!!
Hi Rachel loved the video you did a great job. I was curious to see if you and your friend were still working on the origins of diamond painting and why the diamonds were called drills? Thanks js
Thank you for your video, you are a natural, patient, excellent teacher!!!! Just like Diane M. below I am just now ordering my first painting!!!! B/C of your excellent "Presentation" not only ordered but subscribed to your channel so I hope you continue teaching how to do this!!!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!! WE ALL NEED PEOPLE WHO SHARE THEIIR KNOWLEDGE W / each other.......????? Can I mix up square and round
Thank you for the comparison :) I'm still a square-girl though :D Time isn't important for me and I don't have any wrist issues. I place my tray in the same orientation than my canvas, that way I don't have twist my wrist at all :)
Thank you! I got a few rounds drills and I'm waiting on my first square drills. I like how the squares turn out. If I'm happy with my square order I will prob keep the squares as the effects is more better to me
Nice finished product, but I didn't see the 2nd butterfly until you pointed it out. I prefer squares...just my personal choice. I enjoy your reviews every time, so thank you. Hope you have a fabulous day,Rachel!
Great job , this was a great post review ,very informative. I loved the vibrancy of the squares but enjoying rounds atm Thanks for making this video appreciate the the time spent doing it.
Just finished a 110 x 70 cm Green Peacock in round, and the detail is amazing ... so if using rounds Rachel is right go bigger. I'm also doing a 50 x 50 cm Hedgehog in square - a lot more labour intensive, but the detail for the size is amazing. So you can afford to go slightly smaller with square. I prefer square - but you need more patience. Oh I work in a headstone shop - so I use our sample granite to weight it in between seasons (I do a couple at work) ... and I use firm hold hairspray to firm them up - no popping - so far. (I use hairspray for my pencil portraits to seal them) Hairspray does not seem to lose the sparkle.
i haven't received my first painting yet, but from what i've heard from other creators on here, is to get square cause it looks more finished. and omg they were so right. i'm so glad i got squares and not rounds. it looks a lot clearer and you can see the details better than the round ones even though it's a smaller painting. thank you for this!
This was a great video, Rachel. I loved every bit of it. I usually go for squares, but like to do rounds when I feel a need to finish a canvas quickly. I will be avoiding this store. Thanks so much for doing both of these. 😊
Love this video! Thank you ❤️ I just started doing DP a week ago and finished one "snack" size in round, now I'm working on a square one. I'm still learning both, but.. I'm more of a glitter person 😂 so the rounds catch my eyes more because they really twinkle ⭐ I think I will love both though 👍🏻
The butterfly looks more like another flower to me on both pics, but it still works with the look. The colors of the square is much better. But I like the way the lines of the rounds are on the petals and leaves vs the squares. I think from this demo you have proven me that I want round for things with the detailed lines in the larger sizes. This was so helpful. Thank you.
Hi, Rachel Rae! I am a very, very new beginner and am intending to become obsessed with diamond art painting. I am wondering, in reference to the drills/diamonds popping up/out of place in the diamond art painting, if you can iron the painting to prevent the drills/diamonds from popping up? Is ironing the paintings an okay practice that is not damaging to the artwork? Thank you!!
Thank you for doing this video. I’m finishing my first diamond painting tonight and it’s a round. And then I have a square drill one on its way. Plus a Special Drill partial that I have to work on while I wait. ;) brand new so trying out all different kinds!
So interesting! Thank you for doing this video and test! I wonder how the hand charting process could possibly affect the chart of a painting in round vs square if a human could do a better job making them look closer to each other?
I have the popped up lines too because of bubbles. It's an Ever Moment even. I like the look of the squares better. Thank you for the tip on getting the tabs off the drills. I was wondering about that myself. I seem to have a lot of them!
I think Sam Studio covered getting rid of bubbles in one of her videos. She took a razor blade and sliced thru it without cutting the canvas. I've tried it a couple of times with good results!
thank you. I have been wondering about this topic. I was working on two to compare but got off on gift one. so good to know. I guess I'll get back to mine eventually.
Two questions: what do you do with all your completed diamond paintings and have you heard of, or used, a pen that you can load with multiple drills in the barrel? I know there are pens with ends that can hold multiple diamonds but I'm talking about a pen where the drills can feed through the barrel to the nib for application. Does that make sense?
What do you do if one pops off? Do you just glue it back on with some type of glue? Thanks so much for doing this video. I have been thinking about doing this but just don't know anything about it. Thanks again! 💗👍🏻
Im getting into diamond painting with my first kit coming in just a few short days! I also ordered a few more just because I Couldn't help myself. And needless to say there's a growing wishlist on my part of additional ones I wish to get in the future. All the ones I have coming so far are round, but I definitely think I'm going to get a square one next so that by then I would have already gotten accustomed to the whole process of everything and it would be a nice adjustment. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in the two now more than ever!
Hullo, Shy Speaks! I have recently (or not so recently) been seeing your comments on basically every single video I've watched. From reptile videos to ASMR videos. Your comments have always been so well written and I get super excited when I see your username. I enjoy reading your stories :)
If you get a really fine (240 grit) sponge backed nail file, you can take care of the hangers-on. The simple in the center can actually make it stick better because it's more difficult to get off the glue with a tiny air pocket.
If someone wants to to that trouble with that many drills, that is their prerogative, but personally I would not go to that effort. It would take the fun out of it for me.
I've watched a few of these video's and was glad to see the followup to your earlier video where you started these two. I think I'll stick with my rubber stamping. But I was curious about this. Thanks for doing this. It was informative. My question is do all the companies have flaws in their drills? I do like the final results of these pictures. Thank you.
Hi Rachel. I just found your channel and your information is great, both your pictures are beautiful! I wanted to try the diamond effect and your explanation was very good. Thank you.
My take is Square=Pixelated Round=Pixelated+blurred (the fact that the actual image is showing in parts due to the drills shape, gaves a blurred edge effect to everything) If you love pixel art, don't bother with a bigger canvas, but make sure your image is readable in pixels. If not, the bigger the better for both options, honestly. Thanks for the tutorial!!!
I’ve been afraid to try square because of what I hear about popping drills. I am doing my first DIamond Art Club and love it. Easy to read symbols, love the poured glue and wrinkle free canvas. Thanks for the comparison. I will hit the subscribe button!
Thank you for sharing this comparison. I looked up the listing and see the drills are advertised as "resin". The way you were describing all the defects in the drills sound more like acrylic drills. Thoughts??
What about a comparison for drill placement? For example, I just finished a round drill piece that was 42” x 32”. Many times I place 2 - 6 drills at one time - is that even possible to do with square drills?
Absolutely, you can multiplace both rounds and squares. I have a square drill video if you'd like to see :) Here: ua-cam.com/video/FohQhORIuiE/v-deo.html
I’m new to DP. My WIP is my first DAC (round) and I’m having a similar issue with the glue. If I don’t put the drill in the perfect spot and try to push it in place with my pen it will go back. Sometimes they don’t want to line up. And in some cases you can see the “dummy” circles and the drills won’t move (they just slide back to where they were). It almost seems like the drills are too small. Good thing I have 3 more DAC paintings in my stash so I can determine if it’s a DAC thing or if it’s just this particular painting.
The square has greater clarity to my eye.
me too!! I would probably do a square painting if you were going to frame them, lol
What do you perfer
Me to😊👍🏻
Same my cousin has one of squares and its so comfortable to look at it irl than on video
Squares take longer, but the paintings look more finished. I like that they look like mosaics.
You are a star! Thank you Carole!
hi carole could you do the math for me on a 30 x 90 cm and 50 x 50 and 40 x 50 please i would really appreciate the help
@@joannstanger4679 40x50 = 20x25 x2 so that would be 16,000 if squared and 12,500 if round
Carole Baskin?? LOL PROB NOT
Maddie’s World - No ... not that Carole 😉
The square one took my eye immediately. It looks fuller, more colorful and more realistic.
Mhm! And has more detail. Or at least it’s clearer detail.
I have ordered my first diamond painting and it is a round drill. I.didn't know there was a difference between round and square and I got worried. Square looks like High Definition TV, round looks like analogue lol
I love that you did this video and I'm very grateful that you took the time to purchase, work on and review the canvases. Thank you! :)
The square looks way better than the round. I like how vivid the square is
Thank you for creating the difference. I appreciate it. You are easy to listen to as well.
i honestly perfere square over round because it does give the paintining a more finished look
I definitely agree
Square is more defined. Both are pretty. Thanks for showing the comparison
I love your videos!! I’m a Diamond Painting beginner and I learn so much from you!!

Thank you! Yes, it was really fun to see the differences.
Thank you for doing the same painting. This helped me alot.
Thank you so much for doing this comparison . I have learned a lot!
This was the first video I saw of yours. I just started DP in January. I absolutely love it! I can’t get enough of your channel.
im late, but im just about finished with my second painting, which is a round drill painting. i have eyesight problems and am yet to get glasses, so round is so much easier because you dont have to be too exact! although square looks more finished, round is so much easier and beginner friendly. :)

Awesome video. I have not yet tried diamond painting and was contemplating square or round.. thank you for this!!
So interesting. I just did my first diamond painting (round partial drill) and now I'm waiting on another round and two square. Can't wait to see for myself the difference!! Thanks for the great video
Wow, when you take a step back, they look super similar. Up close, they almost look like different pictures!
Thank you so much for doing this comparison. I lean toward the squares more often than the round.
Thank you Rachel :) But maybe the reason I like square is wierd? I just like doing the checkerboard pattern and then hear the clicking noise of the drills when you place them :P
Same!!!
I find squares more frustrating because a lot of mine pop. BUT I prefer it because its so much more satisfying and is so flush without gaps, I just find it more fun haha so I guess I'll deal with the popping drills.
I just bought my first diamond painting today online and I am soo looking forward to hearing the satisfying sound when I place drills haha
Same honestly, the click is fabulous
Thank you so much for this video! It was really helpful picking between round and square for my first diamond painting.
Thank you for this comparison. I wondered what the differences were. It seems as though the round is more pixelated. You are right, the square drills have more depth and variety of shading. I knew straight away which was which haha
I've never done square but i've ordered 2 in a decent size and i'm scared 🤣🤣
Good video!!
I’m new to diamond painting and your comparison really helped me see the difference. This is great! 😍
I like both round and square Diamond Painting kits.
Thank you for doing this comparison. It’s a pretty picture. It is my opinion that the “square” looks clearer. But I must also admit I only do “square” diamond paintings. Thanks again!
Thanks. I am wanting to try a picture converted to diamond painting. It will be square drills.
That’s it I’m going for square Drills I know they’re a little more difficult to work with but It looks more vibrant and detailed
You made a informative comparison between round and square diamond paintings. I'm on my second diamond painting. The quality of the materials really makes a difference. I still can't order from Diamond Art Club. They are always sold out!
I love square, I and doing one right now while listening and watching to you. And I like how squares look more fuller in lines.
Wow, thank you for all of the work you put into this comparison!
The square for sure. More vibrant and clearer!
Hi Rachel thanks you for this video I have learned a lot from it about the shading. Great video thank you again. Keep up the good work 😘
It's a shame that the round painting had duller colors than the square painting to start with, because when you add in the resolution from the size of the diamonds, it makes a huge difference. It's too bad they didn't both have the exact same colors for a more fair comparison.
I just ordered my first diamond paintings on Amazon and am excited to get started :-).
I don't think it's a completely fair comparison when the colours are different. Both very pretty.
When I started dp I started with square and loved it, had a ruff time with the rounds, would prefer square, thanks for the demo
*rough 😊
Wow, great video!! I didn’t know that they were different sized drills, it seems like it should be opposite of what it is. Very informative and interesting! Thanks for another great video!!
Thanks for the great review😀 Save me time and money. Ever Moment is my go to for squares .
Another comparison would be the same painting but over different sizes. Very good video.
Didn’t know square existed def going to look for them
This was very informative!
Thank u for all your effort in this excitement. U did an excellent job I learned so much!! 😁
Excellent review thankyou so much, we are all I am sure very thankful for all the time it took you to do the review🌟🌈
Great job , this was a great post review ,very informative.
I loved the vibrancy of the squares but enjoying rounds atm
Thanks for making this video appreciate the the time spent doing it.
(I use hairspray for my pencil portraits to seal them) Hairspray does not seem to lose the sparkle.
Such a nifty idea -- no yellowing after time?
Thank you for doing the comparison. Such great info.
Love your channel
It’s difficult to compare them because the colors of the square drills is so much more vivid. I’m torn because I love the sparkle!!
Hi Rachel! Great video as always! Very informative! Thank you for your honesty in every video! Love ya Friend! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Rachel u said bigger is better for detail. What size do you recommend. I'm a beginner. Cheers.
i haven't received my first painting yet, but from what i've heard from other creators on here, is to get square cause it looks more finished. and omg they were so right. i'm so glad i got squares and not rounds. it looks a lot clearer and you can see the details better than the round ones even though it's a smaller painting. thank you for this!
You're very welcome!
Thanks for the comparison review! I do like the square over the rounds ❤️👍🏻
Thanks for doing this totally awesome! I wish someone would do a ever moment vs another store.
This was a great video, Rachel. I loved every bit of it. I usually go for squares, but like to do rounds when I feel a need to finish a canvas quickly. I will be avoiding this store. Thanks so much for doing both of these. 😊
Thank you, Rose 💜
I have yet to do a square one but seeing them side by side, I much prefer the square ones x
Ach I just got 3 round paintings in the post today I wish I had of looked into it more and got square looks so much better
Thank you so much. VERY informative and helpful Rachel Rae
Square has more clarity where round has softer look. Thanks for doing this comparison.
Found it! Great.

Ya I noticed the colors were different right from the start. The colors are better in square so its difficult to judge which ones better.
awesome comparison. very useful info
Hi just want to ask , I will be doing a 70x100 portrait of a person which one do you thing Will shine or better , round or square ?
Im getting into diamond painting with my first kit coming in just a few short days! I also ordered a few more just because I Couldn't help myself. I like the square better.
It is brighter with a more defined look.
The round looks like I am looking through frosted glass.
Thank you for doing this video!
If you get a really fine (240 grit) sponge backed nail file, you can take care of the hangers-on. The simple in the center can actually make it stick better because it's more difficult to get off the glue with a tiny air pocket.

Thanks for doing this. It was informative. My question is do all the companies have flaws in their drills? I do like the final results of these pictures. Thank you.
Thanks for the comparison.
Hi Rachel. I just found your channel and your information is great, both your pictures are beautiful! I wanted to try the diamond effect and your explanation was very good. Thank you.
The square looks more finished and the color looks better but the round one is really shiny and sparkling from your phone..
My take is
Square=Pixelated
Round=Pixelated+blurred (the fact that the actual image is showing in parts due to the drills shape, gaves a blurred edge effect to everything)
If you love pixel art, don't bother with a bigger canvas, but make sure your image is readable in pixels.
Thanks Mindy! Welcome! 😊💜
I've only done round diamond paintings but the square looks a lot more vivid. Going to try a square one. Hope it's not too hard. :)
Thank you for sharing this comparison. I looked up the listing and see the drills are advertised as "resin". The way you were describing all the defects in the drills sound more like acrylic drills. Thoughts??
Yes, I think they were acrylic!
@@RachelRaeCraft The acrylic and resin conundrum continues. 😁🌼🌼🌼
The one on the left is very pretty in the colors.
Try contacting DAC and see what they say!
Since it’s my first DAC and only my 5th round, maybe it’s just me. But the glue does seem different in some spots. 🤷♀️ Thank you!
