Hello friends!
Welcome to a post completion review and ultimate comparison between round and square drill diamond painting kits! I completed "Twilight Vibes" in both round AND square drills, the very first offering of such from Diamond Art Club. They are currently testing out offering kits in both drill shapes to choose from, and may roll this out more widely in the future. I thought it would be helpful to complete BOTH versions of "Twilight Vibes" in order to do a true comparison of working on a kit in these two drill shapes. We even use the scientific method to test out one of the most commonly held beliefs of many diamond painters: "Square drill kits take longer to do than round drill kits." What do you think??

It looks to me that the round drill color is more vibrant and richer ❤ and I do like how it twinkle too
I’m glad there are others that were thinking like me, that the rounds seem sharper. Before you stated it, I was guessing that the one on the left was the square painting, to my surprise, that wasn’t the case. I’m excited about that, because I prefer rounds above squares. There really ISN’T that much difference between the two pictured here, maybe because it’s a cartoonish picture? I don’t know. I’m just excited to see that rounds do turn out awesome!
I’d definitely be interested to compare rounds vs squares with a different style of artwork! 🤔
I’m so glad someone else thought the opposite of what was round and square. This video was so helpful as a beginner artist thank you!
When she said the left was round, my jaw literally dropped. I was convinced left was square.
I have always said that rounds are more sparkly and squares are more shimmery... this kind of confirms my thoughts! Thanks!!! I would LOVE to do a comparison like you did.. if I ever get the opportunity, I'll share my data (I'm a bit of a nerd myself)...although my time would be much higher because I'm a single placer and I understand you are the Queen of multi-placing 🙂 Thanks for another great video!
This video is a must watch for everyone in the DP community! I realized that difference because when I bought the canvas I started working last week I used a reference to get the best size, and my reference was a finished canvas of round drills. I went with the same size but got waaaay more details than I was expecting bc I chose square drills so it was a sweet surprise.
Ps: where I live is very common that companies offer multiple size options and both square and round drills, so we have to be careful to choose the best one for that particular image. I went with 50x60cm and it'll look gorgeous when finished
I love numbers too. Myself am obsessed with keeping time how much it takes to complete paintings. I could not resist and used your data of both methods to calculate that you place round drills 1.14 times faster than square drills (number was the same for both time comparison methods you used!!!). first method you took 1.60 seconds for round and 1.83 for square to place 1 drill and in the second method you took 1.54 for round and 1.76 for square.
Excellent comparison. Please do not hold your breath for a comparison this detailed by moi 😂 Love you, Katie!
I totally have faith that you could! 😘 Thanks, Rachel!
Rachel, I watched yours from 5 years ago, and it was good, too! It's just a shame that company wasn't as careful to keep things the same, especially color!
Awesome video! The spacing of rounds always gives a more airbrushed softer effect to the artwork. I suppose that's the coloring that is visible between the drills. Like you I can't pick which I like better. I do time my diamond paintings and It's consistent that squares take a bit longer than rounds to complete. I have never done the same cavas twice but speaking as a seasoned diamond painter (I've completed 253)--I must say that the same size in squares will take a few hours longer to complete. I rarely sweat drill shape when shopping. If I love the picture I will snag it. If given a choice I lean towards squares for landscapes and rounds for anything else. .
Katie, thanks for doing this comparison. I prefer squares to rounds, but I enjoy both and I like to go back and forth between them. I was surprised that I liked the finished paintings equally in round and square. I like the idea of choosing drill shape and if one is sold out, there is the option to buy the other shape and still get a beautiful canvas. ❤
I think the newer DAC square drills do that line of shimmer effect, but back when the square drills had two different styles of facets they did more of a twinkle like the round drills. I love how uniform the new drills are but they lose that twinkle effect.
I've never done a square drill painting before, but based off of what you're showing I like the "twinkle" effect better. I do have a square drill painting in my stash/collection though, so I'll have to see how I feel after I complete it. Usually the rounds are cheaper and easier to get a hold of. I had trouble finding an affordable square drill painting.
Thank you so much for doing this comparison. I'm a round drill lover myself, I didn't enjoy diamond painting as much when I was working on a square drill painting and it was my son and husband who noticed it first lol. Square drill paintings look spectacular, I can appreciate how beautiful they are but I enjoy working on round drill paintings a lot more and I think they are still beautiful.
This is the video I was looking for! Thank you for this comparison. I have only worked with rounds, but I want to try square. However, I love the sparkle and twinkle that comes from the rounds. I also didn’t realize they were bigger in size. Interesting information! Thanks again!
I love the round drills that whole painting sparkles. I have no done a square yet but I did buy to from DRC . I’m excited to start it . Both of your DP are beautiful ! Thank you for sharing.
This video and information was so interesting! Both beautiful. I too thought the rounds looked sharper so I thought they were the squares so was very surprised to see the reverse. I don't know which I prefer! I enjoy rounds and squares fairly equally at this time. The shimmer and the sparkle are both beautiful. I pick the project by how much I like the rendering and colors not by whether they are round or squares. I find placing squares fun and I usually do those with single Placer whereas rounds I tend to use multiple players more often. Bottom line I'm very happy to see that both squares and round are equally beautiful in my eyes at least so um not worried about picking which I like best. Thank you Katie for a fun video and taking the time to do such a detailed comparison!
Wow round seems much sparklier! Thanks for the vid, I can stress less about square v round now 🏆
I love all the science on this. 🥰 I was curious about doing a similar project but my love is sworn to squares, lol. Thank you SO much for this.
I loved and appreciated your work on these two projects. You are amazing in how fast your diamond paint but doing two canvases of the same image deserves high praise. I found your results very interesting and makes me rethink making that decision if given a. choice. I do prefer square even though it does take me longer but like you a break from them is great .
Thanks again for all your hard work,
Huge and very positive impact you have made on this project. Thank you for your time and effort.
Hey Katie! Thank you SO much for doing this video! I have been wanting someone to do the comparison of round and square drills but I didn’t have time to do it myself being a mom of 2 teenagers! I agree with you! Both drills are awesome! I do prefer rounds in faces like Hannah Lynn, and squares in landscapes for a more clean look. Again, thank you so much! 🥰❤️🥰❤️💜💕💜
I love rounds over squares because of the sparkles!!!!
@@kiraj5915 same! So happy I got to see this
I’m on my 1st adventure with Diamond painting. Although this comparison was interesting, being a newbie the drill shape is not a consideration I feel with more experience it may be something to think about- at this stage it’s all about the picture 😊
Loved ALL that you did with the comparisons was great information. I am so glad that you kept both canvasses and presented a side-by-side of the finished products. Thank you for all that you do! 💖💎
That scientific segment?!! I was eating it up!!!!!! I loved that!!!!! Excellently done comparison video!!!! Thank you!!!❤❤❤
When comparing round to square drills I have always felt like round drills make for a "softer" look to the finished painting, some might call it more fuzzy or blurry. With square drills you seem to get more detail in the finished product, it looks less pixilated to me. I enjoy doing both types, but I usually order my snack size/palate cleanser kits in rounds and my bigger kits in squares. How long they take to finish isn't a factor for me, this is my way of relaxing and letting my mind wander. Finishing is a sense of accomplishment but also kind of sad, especially if it was a kit I particularly enjoyed
Omg thank you so much for doing this video at first I thought the first pic was a,square and was so surprised it was a round both are amazing kits but I do prefer rounds to squares most off the time fab video ❤
Thank you for the comparison. I just started this one in round drills
I have been swamped lately, end of schoolyear crazy, but I really wanted to catch this video. Thanks for a great side-by-side comparison! I also have always felt like round drills give a slightly more muted look than square. I think the additional space and slightly lighter background color of the canvas versus the drills, gives a lighter appearance.
Thanks, Katie!! I love that DAC chose to offer the exact same rendering and drill count in both shapes, and instead changed the image size. Now we know the rendering and drill count is what determines the amount of detail, not just the drill shape 💖
Thanks so much Katie for all the work you put into this side by side comparison, I found it fascinating. Like you, I know I will always need both in my life for many reasons. I am not sure how I would go about deciding......they both look awesome.
I know alot of people love having the choice but I don't lol it stresses me out and gives me so much anxiety. I had planned to get round for this one because even in the images posted online the rounds looked more colorful somehow. I went with square instead because I was assured they were the same color drills and I'm not so great at getting rounds straight. After seeing yours completed I prefer how the rounds look because i got it for my toddlers room. I feel like I made the wrong choice now 😆
I think I will always prefer a round over square as long as I can get the detail in the rendering to look nice yet not be a massive painting. I just like the way the rounds sparkle. The shimmer on a square is its own kind of beauty. But if I had a choice, it would always be round
Why does the round look so much brighter? Is it just the light?
Good question! Maybe because of how faceted the drills are, or the canvas that shows behind/around the round drills? It’s possible it’s the lighting but I tried to keep it as level as possible but I’m sure I wasn’t perfect.
Absolutely fantastic comparison! Thank you so much. And your work is encouraging and top notch! Thanks again. All the best & God bless.
Thank you so much for all of this. This was very eye opening and interesting. On this specific comparison, i personally prefer the round drills. I wouldn't be sad about the squares though lol. My Christmas canvas will be my first square and my hopes is to start it in November
Hi Katie! Excellent comparison! Love this video🥰🥰
Thank you for the comparison. I love that DAC rendered both in the exact same detail by expanding the size of the round canvas. I wish others would do this rather then adepting the amount and detail to the size of a square . So people always say go bigger if going with round. I agree with you on which to use with each type of drill though. I really hate having to pick out the drill type and canvas size. I hope that DAC continues this same process with up coming pictures. Being a nerdy perfectionist I would go with round knowing that the rendering would come out the same even if they charged slightly (you notice I said slightly) more for the round, because the squares takes me so much longer. I love detail so I’ve gone with squares but I think I would prefer rounds if I could get the same detail. Yes they have a different texture that translates like you said to a different perspective on the picture because of the light play but more relaxing for rounds for me then squares. Just me saying. Peace and love abide with you 💕
I would love rounds more because of twinkle. Thanks for comparing.
Thank you, this is really helping me. Im new to diamond painting. I haven't started a kit. Im still exploring. So many beautiful kits hard to choose ❤
This was such a helpful video to watch! I'm one of those beginners so this was one of the perfect videos to kind of narrow down on what to work with. For now, I work with round shape drills only cause that's what I started out with those 5D stickers for my son but maybe to challenge myself, I'll eventually gravitate to square! Thanks Katie for this video(even though I'm commenting so late in the game haha)
Thank you for doing this! I’ve always wondered.
Thanks you so much..I love this😍 my mother can only round drills. This will be such a godsend of they keep doing that. If you can choose. We both love diamond art club
Lovely comparison! You have so much patience to dp both!
I was just thinking about round vs squares as I was staring at my round dp in a dim lit room and the shimmers of my round dp is way more magical than my square dps. So for me, I prefer round for the final shimmery sparkly effect AND the shorter amount of time for completing a round dp 😊
If DAC offered both options on all of their kits, I would pick round drills 100% so I can complete more kits faster.
Tbh, the square drills' shine look flat to me compared to the round drills. HOWEVER, up close, a completed square dp looks better than its round counterpart bc there are no gaps. Then again, these things are meant to be looked at from a distance, so for me, I would love if DAC offered round drills for every kit! 🎉
I didnt work on a square canvas so far because im new to this craft. I was curious about the finished look between both variations. So thank you very much ❤ i feel like on round drills it looks slithly darker because you can see still parts of the printed canvas. On lighter colors like the light blue part on the left side you can see it. The square drills got like a smoother transition from one color to another. While on round drills it looks for me slightly off because you still see the darker blue from the canvas. I guess if i see a canvas i would like to work on and there is a lot of light colors with many color changes i would tend to go for squares ☺️
Wow really cool comparison. I love botth but always felt rounds sparkle where squares shine. I really enjoy working on both.
Thanks for the really thorough review. It's like the round appears bigger or closer and more vivid. But the square is finer. This helped me decide that for me, like what you said, for big paintings like landscapes or big fantasy ones that are elaborate, I would choose squares. Plus it seems rounds look more pixelated. Agree that the rendering on both is identical.
Very interesting, informative and nerdy! I like both depending on the picture. Great job, Katie ❤❤
Nerdy fact filled videos like this one are great! Hope to see more of them
Great, great, great review Katie!
I like the round twinkle but the uniform transformation calls me. I to need both in my life 😊
Katie! Love this thank you for doing this comparison! Personally I love love love squares but like u I need some rounds in my life too! I love that DAC is offering some in both! I love the science and math u did in this! Ur amazing thanks again!
That would be a hard one to pick because they are both beautiful! I think I will stick with rounds for my girls and Puffy Gator but square for all landscapes! You always do such a beautiful job!
Thanks Katie! I always gravitate to square, but if I really like the painting I will buy it in the round. Given the choice I would probably pick square.
Artwork on the wall is usually viewed from at least 60 cm. So it’s hard to film what they’ll look like on the wall, but your experiment verifies what I expected: I prefer round drills when the shapes in the art are angular, and round drills when curved. It is tremendous that you did this and filmed to share.
Thanks for doing this Katie, very informative! I agree a lot with the points you made. Believe from a distance both canvases look awesome! 💙💎
Oh Katie! Thank you for doing this comparison. As someone who prefers rounds I always wondered if I was missing by not using squares. This shows how lovely DAC can render artwork in both. I’m excited, moving forward, that we may have the option to pick our preferred shape from DAC.
Thank you. I am a newbie and looking forward to working with both drills. I do think the round color looks more vibrant and the square more muted..Both are really pretty though.
Great video, I really like both, didn't realise that the square kits are that bit smaller, i have this kit in square drills in my stash can't wait to start it now 😊.Thanks for the videos really enjoy them ❤
I appreciate how thorough you are, I find it so helpful! 😊 Thank you for the work and time you dedicated to this. I would agree that the kits more recently released seem to include less drill supply which feels a bit uncomfortable; however its also true that previously we often had a generous amount remaining after completion. Perhaps DAC is trying to find the best balanced option?
I love this comparison! This was exactly the information I was looking for! Thank you!! Can you please share a link for the drill storage boxes your showing on this video?
Fantastic review! It’s tough. I will always pick rounds as it’s easier on my hand. But I love both.
Fantastic comparison. Your explanation was helpful and understandable. Agree with you, I think i need both in my life too! Thank you for taking the time to do an amazing comparison.
These turned out beautiful! Like you, I need both Diamond shapes in my collection! I personally think I’m faster at rounds and I am still practicing the multiplacing with squares. I would personally look at the artwork detail to help me decide whether I’d want texture and sparkle of round or the squares even shine! :)
Love this breakdown!! I also love to see the numbers, especially when you lay it out with these nice visuals. If you enjoyed doing it, I'd love to see more breakdowns in the future.
I love this comparison! 🥰
What an awesome video! So informative and interesting! Thank you for doing this and all the in-depth details about each. 💚💎
Thanks for sharing this! Talk nerdy all the time- it was fascinating to listen to. I could also really see the 'twinkle' vs the 'shimmer' in each. I do like both so I think I'll be like you in thinking about what would suit the piece if I need to decide between round and square.
Thank you for the comparison
I love your comparison videos. It is fascinating!
that picure is soooo beautifull in round and squares 😍 I started with rounds and will probably stick with it. But will try squares
Thank you for the video
I disliked square drills in the beginning but now I enjoy it soooo much! I really like the click sound they make and I get fuzzy feeling when they start to align. As for the finished product, there is more twinkle in the circle but I like the carpet like feeling that the square drills give off. Like you said, both give you a different type of satisfaction when placing them. I like them both the same.
The left side looks so much more vibrant! I thought that square drill would provide a better result but not really
Good morning Katie, I like both canvases. The one on the left colors are more intense. If I had a choice, I would choose round. This means my OCPD would be less of a bother for me.
Love statistics, in the summer between third and fourth grade, for my Dad's birthday I did all the statistics on every baseball player on every league, including Japan and Canada. My Dad was quite pl with my completed project. Also, learn to do the same thing with Thoroughbred horses. Need to know if you are going to bet the ponies.
Thank you for the comparison .
Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
Have a wonderful day.
Excellent review. I was a bit surprised that the left hand canvas was a round as I always felt square drill canvases gave the better effect. There definitely is more of a twinkle with the rounds. With other companies who offer the same canvas in both round and square, I know now why the square drills don't always fit neatly together like DAC's square canvases do - it's a size thing!
I find with round drills, particularly with large areas of colour blocking that my rows are more likely to become crooked. I am working on DAC’s Springtime Wonder (your favourite: fox) in square drills and I think it is the newest canvas I have worked on with the incredibly uniform drills. They are so much easier to keep on the straight and narrow. I just finished Kitty Cuddles in round and I spent an awful lot of time straightening up the rows!
The softer look of round drills looks amazing I think for fantasy type canvases or dreamy subjects where perhaps the square look best for clear and sharp portraits or landscapes. Great video Katie( thanks for all your hard work. 🌸🤗
I used to have a hard time keeping the round drills straight as well. If you will look elsewhere in her videos, you'll find an excellent technique for keeping the rounds straight. It's a "quad" method & I dont even need a straightener when Im finished😍
I would love to do this! I would love all the numbers and statistics involved. I will let you know if I get the chance to do something like this.
It may just be a lighting issue, but the color of the round canvas seems to be more saturated. Do you see that difference in person?
It’s not quite as stark in person but there is definitely a difference. Perhaps because the rounds are slightly larger and more faceted, and also because of the colors of the canvas that show around the drills? I tried to keep the lighting level but I’m definitely not perfect ☺️
So i am new to the diamond painting community and im absolutely in love i finally started last week finnished 3 so far only rounds. when do you suggest a new diamond painter should try a square drill shape? Also i love you and your videos i have been watching for a couple moths now and im so happy i finnaly got my diamond paintings and i have a large amount not open in my craft room already..
I accept your challenge and the next painting that comes out in both I will purchase and time myself in small videos and we can look at numbers and Im a newer diamond painter (aug 2022) and we will see. I cannot multiplace like you (I wish) but Ill do my best lol. Thank you for the data I love it too
I think both came out nice. I am leaning towards the round a bit only because the colors looked richer, but perhaps that was the lighting? Anyway, I am partial to squares because I struggle with getting rounds straight. The perfectionist in me gets frustrated and I often don’t find it fun. But thank you for your time and thoughts. I am a bit in the camp of wanting DAC to just choose for me, but that’s just me.
Thank you for the video! This was very interesting. Just one question came to mind in the name of science 😄 when you compared the time for the exact same sections, did you do it twice? Once starting with the round drills then the squares and vice versa? It could make a difference when you have already worked on a section and kind of know which drills go where… 😊 But again, thank you for the video I loved it! 😃👍🏼
In my opinion, with round drills, you're just placing some sparkly things on some art. With square drills, the drills ARE the art. With round, you can always see the canvass behind them. I grew up with cross stitching as my hobby, and that's probably another reason I prefer square. ❤
I loved the comparison of both kits & all the stats! Thank you so much Katie!
Your the Bomb you know That❤❤❤❤
The round drills seem to look much richer and more vibrant than the square. Is that true when looking at them in person?
It’s not quite as stark in person, but the effect is a little different for sure!
What would be your opinion for doing like a personal photo? Not just a picture they did but like a family picture.
Great comparison. I tend to prefer round but if it’s a design I’m going to frame, I’m definitely considering the size of the canvas and how much it’s going to cost. Obviously smaller size is going to cost less.
I love the twinkle/sparkle of rounds. I just pick the artwork I love, regardless of drill shape. If given the choice, I'd prefer rounds just because I love that sparkle.
I’ve been starting out with round but I have one square one I want to try soon from dac
I prefer the round canvas
I too am concerned about running out of drills since they have the new drills. Last four I have done I have run out of drills. If course DAC did send me replacement drills
Thank you for the comparison. I agree that the squares do take longer. I think I like squares more then round but, I do both.
Forgot to add, I only single place.
I know what u mean by the shortage of some drills. I’ve sweated till the end. Thanks for letting them know
Round looks the best to my shock😮
Went to my purchases and all 5 of mine only come in squares anyway , but yea the rounds actually look really vibrant!
Im like you, i dont mind either. I like placing square drills so probably have more square than round. The picture appears more defined in the round compared to the square. I like the shimmer on the round too but at the same time i like the closeness of the drills on the square 🤷🏼♀️ 😂
I know I'm late to this video, but did you see the two C's in the paw of the round painting and fill them in? You were missing two there
For me, I notice that with squares I can't multiplace. I have to do them singularly. I can use either tweezers or the placer with squares but I just can't multiplace. 😭 That is the one major difference for me. I began DP'ing with squares and used to refuse to do rounds but when I started up again after a few year hiatus after becoming a Mom, I noticed I preferred rounds. I am super OCD so sometimes squares are difficult for me. But in the end, I think the squares do tend to give a more "solid" image when it comes to tiny details. ❤❤
I like round drills.
I love the sparkle on the rounds but my preference is squares. The squares fill the space whereas the round leaves all those gaps. I know it’s not REAL obvious unless you have a light behind it, but for me, the squares or more satisfying. That being said, I still do both. Working in a round version now. 😊
Squares - FTW :)) They look neater and they seem, to me a t least, convey more details.
The round diamonds has more life in the picture than the square one.
