Beaching of melon-headed whales in China sparks rescue mission, bodies of some used for research

Rescuers have saved at least seven melon-headed whales, a species related to pilot whales, after a group of 12 animals were spotted off the shore of China's Zhejiang province. Local police in the city of Linhai received the report about the stranding at about 8am on July 6, 2021, prompting the rescue involving about 150 people and lasting several days. As of July 9, six of the animals had reportedly been released back into the wild and one other whale was still being cared for.

Low tides are attractive hunting grounds due to concentration of fish especially at where the river meets the sea/ocean. They could have been distracted during the hunt and went too far into the river. The muddy water disoriented their bearing as the alpha got trapped in the mud. Their echolocation probably ineffective in muddy water.

too much human and military activity, noise chases the whales out of the water also so much pollution too and the oceans are changing too rapidly
@Kane Xu alpha is a lie, just like wolves do not have pack or alpha. That only happens when they are forced to live in captivity or small space. Normally they are just a family and the parents are the leaders, there is no alpha
I bet those creatures sometimes think that what a unique creatures are those humans first some of them pollute water and harm us then others rescue us .
I bet they don't even know its humans who put those countless amount of inedible jellyfish look alike in the ocean. So they won't think what you just mentioned

For people who are commenting how surprised they are that they didn't eat them, let me say they don't eat whales. Next, it's already online , and if you know Chinese social media and the youngsters, you will know this will be monitored until they are relased back in the ocean. China is that one country, which has taken lots of initiatives and achieving them one by one. They have turned desert and mountains into forest, no food wastage, lifting millions fr poverty. I can only dream of all these things happening in my country.
We live in a two faced white privileged society where people believe anything they read on social media, who don’t even bother educating themselves because they think they’re privileged and obligated to say what they want that pleases them to gain attention and which makes them a badass.
The problem is the rest of the world thinks that China eats anything that moves.

Melon head whales are listed second class protected animal in China. So if you go to China one day, remember don’t eat them there, otherwise you’ll find yourself in jail.

Few months ago, a whale shark washed ashore in a beach in Odisha, India. The locals helped it to get back where it came from.
I hope they will get proper rehabilitation. It is quite pathetic but the positive side is that human are giving their best effort to save them.

Observation: Whales aren't as smart as elephants.
Even though these are non human beings, the reaction and rescue organization is way more professional than what was happening in Miami.

Some survived, some didn't.
They are more susceptible to sunburn than most other animals. This is primarily caused because they lack a protective layer such as fur, feathers or scales. Dolphins and whales rely on being underwater in order to combat the effects of the sun. Prolonged sun exposure causes blisters and the blisters can become infected.
