    I think a 4m Horsch Pronto grain and fert would suits you guys perfectly. Great drill worked a 6m for 6 years drilling 3500/4000 acres a year. No problems just wearing parts. Will drill onto ploughed ground or min till.

    A combination drill is the way to go, definitely! I've sown 1000's of acres with a 3m kuhn combination drill, just on Suffolk Coulters with Hydraulic Coulter lift. It was great at sowing grass seed, too. If you're in stoney land then buy new. I find that once you have to open the bed up to replace a bearing then its time to get rid.
    Surely, if you traded in the old Ford sprayer and some old tractors you have, hanging about doing nothing then you could have some decent kit that will save time and make some money.

    We have 5 drills! 4m Amazone combi on suffolk coulters that drills nurse barley when fettling beet land, had it years. 4m Vaderstad rapid drills cover crops and spring oats into cover crops. 6m KRM tine drill doesn't do a lot, handy in a wet time. Those three didn't cost £10k together. We also have a 3m Pottinger on disc coulters bought new that drills things like wheat after potatoes and barley after wheat. (brilliant) and a 3m Mzuri strip til drill bought two yrs ago on a grant. Saved a lot of cultivation, and replaced an old Kockerling tine drill. They all have a place.

      thinks they are the only folks in the area doing tillage, so probably not many options for that

  • @2013viewchannel
    @2013viewchannel 15 днів тому +2

    I can see why you would be looking to get a single pass for planting the cereals. Realistically from a labour point it will be just you and your father, Bro is in college and will most like be working when he finishes, Liv looks after the stock in the yard, getting good operators like Lee, Rory or Brendan isn’t possible every year so it make sense to see what other options are there especially with the other spring work that will be going on. Also for 200-250ac a year it needs to be affordable.
    A couple of things to take into account but the most important would be the fields, are you fields suitable for one pass? If you still have fields with those massive stones then no pint putting a nice one pass or combi drill into them only to make bits of the it.
    The standard 3m 1 pass units are still the most common set-up in Ireland so plenty of options around. They do would best on ploughed ground so you will still need to use the lekmen on ground that can’t be ploughed beforehand. Most do about 30-40ac/day, 4m might get 50ac (depending on the amount of time you want to be in the tractor).
    Depending on what size you go for the you will need to know what tractor to put I on especially if you go for a 4m with hopper on front as these are not easy to take on and off. This will tie up a tractor for a couple of weeks. Id go with the 7618 so that the 99 can still do the heavy harrow and the slurry pumping. You will still need the 6270 to put out fertilizer.
    The trailed units do offer the option to sow seed and fertilizer at the same time. While big and clunky they do offer the flexibility to take the machine on and off easier which is handy especially when you need to do a different job with tractor on the same day.
    Another option would be something like a clayton unit that plants straight into stubble, not sure if they can take fertilizer as well.
    While the combi drills can drill start into stubble if it the land had been tracked over winter, or slurry or dung when out or cattle were out wintered on it would need to have been ploughed or harrowed 1st.

    We had the same debate a few years ago, 6m trailed or 4 meter combi with front tank, being in Cumbria and having as much rain as the next man we went with the combi, if you find yourself in a sticky patch at least you can lift a combi up, the trailed drill is on the floor whatever the weather 🤷 hope that helps
