Atari was a big deal for a kid in the 80's until the original Nintendo. I did squeeze a Commodore 64 in between those though. Anyone else ever have one of those?
I still have a functioning monitor for a commendor 64. I used that as my tv for years.

E.T. Really wasn't that bad of a game. The problem was that so many people didn't read the damn instruction manuals for the games back then, and E.T. was a game where you absolutely HAD to read and know that manual. That map is a multiscreen map. It has location cues on it, sound cues that you have to listen for. There's time cues and a specific location for the for the landing event It's kind of the first computer RPG on the Atari if you kind of think about the mechanics of it. A lot of people just slammed that cartridge in, didn't read the manual, and just ran the character around making it fall in pits with no clue how to get to the goal, what the little symbols were, the locations were, or how to do... anything. Especially a little kid trying to play it, without reading the manual, it probably was frustrating as hell. I used to play it all the time. Me and my friends used to speedrun it and compete against each other for best times. It was by no means a great game, but it wasn't the worst game in the world as everyone claims either. It was just... "Ok."
Same here Savage Mister. So many times I yelled at my TV because damn ET fell in the hole again.
@@christopherlucas4620 It was rather easy to keep ET from falling in those holes, but you had to learn the technique. As a matter of fact, dropping into those holes, catching ourselves, so ET would just hover at the top so he wouldn't get damaged and lose health, and then levitating across them is a great strategy for getting away from the scientist and secret agent. All I heard from people who played this game was, "I just kept falling in holes.", when that was a game mechanic that me and my friends used to exploit to get away from the bad guys and we had no problem with when we played. We had no problem with this game. Haha. Like I said. We used to speed run it and compete with each other over the best times. We had "Getting ET to that space ship on the hardest dificulty" down to a science. Like I said, the key was having that manual memorized, knowing what the symbols meant, knowing the sound and time cues, and learning the game mechanics, and like any game... practice and not getting frustrated with it.
I had an Atari system that was preloaded with 2 versions of breakout, and 3 versions of Pinball. Single player. Once you completed both levels of each game, it wasn't that much fun anymore.
I'm old enough to remember when Pong was the sensation at restaurants. A lot of fights broke out over kids that hogged the machine.
I forgot about Tempest. I enjoyed that game so much as a kid. We had an original Atari and then my brothers and I got a Coleco Vision for Christmas.... Memories....
I seriously want that Dracula statue. Have no room for it, but he'd really tie the living space together.
I never was nor will ever be a gamer, but this was a pleasure to see. I remember most of the incarnations and used to sell Mattel's Intellevision game Claimimg has "advanced" graphics over Atari, at the electronics store where I worked. I was laid to total waste when my 6 year old nephew challanged me to a game on his Nintendo. I told him I gave him mercy and let him beat me! The boy was genius!
Just went there for my first time today. Had to pull up the video from you to show my dad since he wasn't able to go. I remember seeing this video last year not realizing I lived close by to it since moving to the Frisco area a few months ago lol.
Was Ralph Baer's brown box mentioned? That was the first video game console that became The Magnavox Odyssey. Ralph Baer is the inventor of Video Games.
He definitely is credited as the Father of video games. Many people credit Nolan Bushnell, but he only popularized them thanks to the success of Atari. (BTW, there could also a case made for Willie Higgenbothom who created a Pong game on an oscilloscope.)
My brother and I had that triangular Telstar Arcade console. Later we had the Atari 2600, Intellevision, and the Commodore 64. I also saw a bunch of handheld games in that place that one of us had. Great vlog!

Hi Jacob awesome vlog on the classic video and arcade games. Sure miss the old arcades at mall. I used to enjoy playing Pac-Man and miss Pac-Man back in the early 1980s. Time has flown so fast. Have a great year👍🏻😺

The first video game was not pong but was a tic tac toe game called OXO which was not sold anywhere but was to test the system of the ESDAC back in 1952

That yellow "Pong" stand up arcade machine. Back in the 70's, the duckpin bowling alley in my town where we used to bowl had one of those and me and my friends used to have these epic "Pong" tournaments against each other. Such nostalgia. Seeing that machine really brought me back to my childhood.
Fun fact. Those Tempest arcade machines used to be horribly unreliable because they were the first color vector video game at the time, and the problem was that during the part of the game when you would fly down the tunnel, the scan lines would go out past the borders of the monitor and it would stress the monitor and the thing would eventually die. To my knowledge, they wrote in a fix to the program that prevented the scan lines from doing this and did a lot or chip replacements on machines to fix this issue.

I also had "Suspended" and pretty much every other game that Infocom made back in the day when I had my Commodore 64. Infocom made the absolute best text adventure games. To this day, no company has ever matched them. Suspended was pretty unique in the genera as instead of a character on an adventure, you played an AI in charge of an automated city that had befallen some kind of catastrophe and you had control of a bunch or robots that you had to order around to repair it to awaken the humans who were in cryo-sleep, or something like that. So many memories.

I didn’t happen to notice (unless I missed something) any old Bulletin Board System games from the early 1990’s, pre internet. I think Pimp Wars, Drug Lord and Legend of the Red Dragon should definitely be in there!

The first game console I ever had was a ZX Spectrum+2. All I recall was the load button was the J button and the noise when it was loading. That noise...arggh!

During a contest in the 8th (9th?) grade I won an Atari 2600. I nurtured my game collection including one for the paddles called Bugs (iirc). When I had moved out during the mid 90's, my little brother sold the entire collection and the Atari for 20.00 I was so pissed when Mom and he finally admitted it a few years later! I bought a new unit for Erik for Christmas this year, and it sits, unopened. It can't compare with Minecraft. Mom might just open it here and play w/o him!

Adventure by Atari was basically the first game to have an Easter Egg in a game. The creators of the games weren't given any recognition for their games. Warren Robinette changed all that with Atari's Adventure.

Oh my gosh! I absolutely love video games! They're my favorite. The very first console I had was the GameCube. My favorite games for it were Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life, Super Mario Sunshine, and the original Animal Crossing. I also had Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Polar Express video games. My sister wanted the Harvest Moon video game so I couldn't play it. I don't know why though. I think it had something to do with the save slots in the game. Anyway, she should have let me play it anyway because I watched her play it and it was awesome. I did get to play Animal Crossing though. It's funny how your favorite video games evolve over time. Animal Crossing has evolved into a franchise that has stuffed animals, different console designs, action figures, even playsets. If I lived in Japan I would have loved the playsets. It was based on the Japanese version of the game as it first premiered in Japan on the Nintendo 64. Anyway, love this video game museum! I'm putting this on my bucket list as one of the places I want to go. Thanks for sharing, and have a great day!

Hey Carpetbagger! Love the videos, you should come check out some of the great museums we have up in NW Ohio. The Museum of the Great Lakes, Imagination Station, and the Wood County Historical Museum. Plus there's a museum dedicated to farm equipment, and classic cars called Snooks.

Lol the ET game was weird. The one we had, had an odd thing happen. When ET used a flower to heal it spun then took off. We contacted them and they wanted us to send the the cartridge. We nrver did though. Wish we did now.

How old is your Grandma? I'm 59 and was 22 when I won an Atari 2600 from a Captain Crunch contest, We were newlyweds and everyone would come over to our little place to play, No one we knew could afford to own one then. We would save up for months to buy a new game, you would prepay and put your name on a list and then awaited the phone call.

Yep, now you're talking my language... I see Puppy Pong is signed by the creator, Al Alcorn (and I think Nolan Bushnell founder of Atari.) Legendary Wings seems to appear a lot for me lately... (It's a mutual friend's favorite game.) E.T. actually wasn't the biggest flop of all time. It sold 3 million cartridges. ;-) Yes, the Mindlink was just one of dozens and dozens of inventions Atari came up with back in the late 70's / early 80's. Fun Fact: Simon was designed by Ralph Baer, the man who is credited as creating the video game (the Magnovox Odyessy 1.) He copied Atari's game called Touch Me (which was only fair since Atari copied his Pong game.)

Carpetbagger there is a museum in Waco Texas it is called the Dr Pepper museum.
I showed my kids the Atari system and they had a hard time understanding how anyone can play a game with just a stick and a button.
