The imitation of the opposite gender is haram but the basis of what is effeminate or masculine is based on the culture and Era.
For example wristwatches used to be a women's only item. Necklaces have for most of the world become normal for men as a man's necklace is very different from a women's.

    Ustadh,
The Hadith states that it Haram for a man to imitate a woman. But how can we say that necklaces and bracelets are unique to women? Isn't that very much dependant on the culture? As the fiqh principle says "العادة محكمة". So if in a culture, it is unique for women to wear bracelets then yes it will be Haram for men. But in our society today it is not at all unique for women to wear bracelets and necklaces, in fact men wear them just as much. In general, the bracelets and necklaces worn by men are different than the ones worn by women. As long as necklaces aren't specified in a Hadith as being for women, isn't it subject to change?
    JazakAllahu khairan

Exactly. IMO (with all due respect) - its an ethcentric Eastern assumption that necklaces are "for women." I can tell you where I'm from, Florida, USA. Equal amounts of men and women wear necklaces, and NO ONE mistakes them as imitating women.

For people saying "it depends on the cultural norms" Allah Yahdeek amin. Some places in the world dress in just a loin-cloth and women aren't covered either. Suppose these people become Muslim, can we say it is allowed because of the cultural norms? can we say Tatoos are allowed because in some island cultures it represents their heritage?
Now I ask you, did our beloved Muhammad Rasulullah (saw) wear necklaces? NO. And did He (saw) not say that Al-Islam "Yajubbu maa qablah" (supercedes everything before it)? So why are we talking about culture when Islam removes that bias, when Islam has freed us from its shackles and when Islam supersedes everything else. Wassalam.

It comes down to what imitating women means. imho In women's fashion, apparel and jewellery is used as adornments. In men's fashion apparel and jewellery is used for practical purposes in masculine affairs. In general this is what has inspired the various different items in male and female attire. So the question we must ask is "What practical purpose does this ring or chain serve in masculine affairs?"
A military dog tag for example is an item inspired from practical use.

Innamal a'malu binniyat, my intentions are not to imitate women. I’ve a great fondness for silver necklaces and bracelets, but unfortunately, I’m unable to wear them due to the stigma surrounding such adornments and the statements of certain Sheikhs claiming it to be haram without clear evidence. I must admit, I’m uncertain about this matter. The religion of Allah teaches naseehah (sincerity and sincere advice), yet some individuals have made it excessively strict and unnecessarily complex. I’ve also come across a statement by Dr. Zakir Naik, who asserts that silver necklaces and bracelets are permissible. Silver can take various forms, such as necklaces, rings, or bracelets, and the religion permits us to wear any silver jewelry regardless of its specific use.

Would necklaces be based on the culture of that society though? In the west, men wear male necklaces, and it's distinguished from women jewellery. Any thoughts on that?

    • @tanzimqurashi7292
      @tanzimqurashi7292 3 роки тому +8

I agree. For example there isn't any clear text (from my knowledge) that says explicitly necklaces are for women only. In the west wearing long clothing is seen as feminine clothing...does that mean thobes are feminine? Whats the difference between a thobe and a dress? Of course thobes aren't for women as determined by Middle Eastern culture. Things like make up are universally understood to be for women. But necklaces in the west dont have a gender. See a lot of guys wearing them.
So whats the thoughts on this?

The question regarding the imitation of women needs to be understood in the context of the culture of the people... In Scotland men wear kilts and in Yemen the men wear their Izaar... In the Americas wearing a short 'skirt' exposing your calfs is considered wearing women's attire... Are you saying then that the millions of Scottish and Yemeni people are wearing women's attire? Of course not...
Likewise the wearing of bracelets and necklaces... In the Indian Subcontinent and in Indonesia as well as my people who are native to the Caribbean and The Americas the wearing of necklaces and bracelets are culturally worn by men as well as women and are not gender specific...
At the end of the day the answer to the question of whether or not it is permissible will depend on the context in which a thing is worn... If the person would be confused with being a woman then they should be encouraged to avoid that... and where no confusion exists then they should refrain from things which will lesson their imaan and have Taqwa... but there is no harm in the case of one who is exercising his right to adornment in accordance with his culture so long as the material is not in of itself haram...
I have said what I have said and I ask forgiveness for myself and for you...

The problem is accordance to culture. I would advice anybody to stop doing anything that is unsure of. Not wearing a necklace won't change your life so it's best to follow the lifestyle of the prophet which he himself never wore a necklace. To be honest all these jewelry comes from hip hop culture that's trending now any young man raised on the waste wearing a necklace 90 percent is influenced by the rappers and musicians.

@@hassanosman3510 My brother and fellow student of knowledge... As-salaamu 'alaykum...
I absolutely agree that the best dress and adornment would be to emulate that of our beloved Prophet (saaw)... However the question is posed as a matter of Fiqh... The Ustadth (for whom I have the absolute respect) made a statement that I understood and support in it's basic form... Understood because I am also a student of knowledge... however there are many who are not aware of the importance of understanding rulings that have alternative conclusions based on urf...
In this case whilst the general permissibility of wearing silver by men is accepted, and that the argument against wearing silver in the form of a necklace and bracelet is specific we need to examine the argument based on its acceptability... since no direct prohibition is implicit in the Shari'ah we are left to the legal opinons of the scholars...
I simply make the case that the argument used regarding the opinion that wearing a bracelet and chain may be prohibited as it contravenes a general impermissibility to emulate the dress of the opposite gender then the question arises as whether or not in fact the wearing a chain or bracelet is specific to women... No doubt in many cultures the use of bracelets and chains are a recent phenomenon and that there is strong influence from 'pop culture'... However my argument comes from the reality that in many long established cultures that predate the coming of our beloved Prophet (saaw) the use of chains and bracelets by men is well established... peoples who have these adornments as part of their culture should not have to conform to the dress code of another culture simply because that culture happens to be that of the Arabs...
In the end Allah and his Messenger (saaw) know best...

Partially true akhi. Not all of what you stated "came from hip hop culture." Additionally, if you think there is something inherently wrong with anything associated with hip hop culture, I suggest you look deeper into its roots. Namely, the mainstream, what you see/hear from the celebrities is not representative of the grass roots etc

Furthermore there is dalil relating to cultural dress not only being okay, but encouraged in instances. Islam is not opposed to cultures. We are opposed to putting out culture above our deen.
Also, maybe in places such as Saudi or even Britain, there is uncertainty or "unsure" as you stated regarding chains imitating women. Let me tell, you, as someone who has lived my whole life in various parts of America - no one will confuse a grown man wearing a male chain of trying to imitate a woman. 😉
