"I Get A Kick Out Of You" by Cole Porter.
Performed by Ethel Merman in the 1936 Paramount film, "Anything Goes".
Ethel Merman plays Reno Sweeney, who sings her song of unrequited love to Billy Crocker (Bing Crosby), whose eye is concurrently and ironically caught by Hope Harcourt (Ida Lupino).
"Anything Goes" was one of the only two films in which Ethel Merman reprised her Broadway role, the other being "Call Me Madam" (1953). Merman left the Broadway production in 1935 to work on the film.
Paramount had to censor the lyrics "Some get a kick from cocaine" to "Some like that perfume from Spain".
Cole Porter wrote a good number of songs with the specific idea that Ethel Merman would sing them and be heard in the back row of the theater.
Maybe, but that quality is not needed in the movies.
The coke line is still in there. Buts it’s only clear to those who know the reference. Back in the 30s one of the most popular perfumes in Spain was one that was named
“cocaina en flor” which loosely translates in cocaine in flower form.
Interesting - thanks!
The original lyrics actually say "Some people get a kick from cocaine"
That moving ring seat is fascinating and so futuristic looking - I've never seen anything like it before!
And that was 1936
@@craig9843 Yes, they had neon lighting in 1936. It's simply a custom neon tube in the ring that she sat in. If you are into that, one Bugsy Berkly flick had neon violins.
This song is the bridge between my love for hip-hop (MF DOOM interpolated this on One Beer) and my love for 20’s-50’s jazz
I caught the Cortex sample on that song, but I had NO idea Doom also interpolated Ethel. That's absolutely awesome!
In the Broadway version of this show (1934) Ethel's understudy was another Ethel - Mertz (Vivian Vance)
How interesting!
Too bad Vivian's musical comedy career did not blossom like Merman's.
@@rexlex1736 YES
There was a rumor that Ethel Mertz was named after Ethel Merman.
This is great ♥️
Ethel Merman terrific as usual. This time different to what I have usually watched her doing. Beautiful here too.
HER TALENT IS ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY
yeah like a shrill foghorn !
@@michelleregis6181 , LIKE A SPECTACULAR AND WELL TUNED BRASS BAND !
I have her original photo with autograph to sell. Would you be interested in buying it?
Cole Porter composed so many great tunes - happy birthday to him today!
A great Hoosier musician.
Great. One of a million classics she introduced. First movies. Later Broadway. This is a cute movie with Bing Crosby. Think they You're The Top together. Both young here. Special stars.
Classic song, classic performance by the truly classic Ethel Merman
Very young here. ❤
Ethel's friend and colleague Carol Channing described Ethel this way: unparalleled as a live performer, but her gifts didn't come through on film, "like sunshine through a glass window, no warmth, no vitamins." That was from her book... of course, I don't have it verbatim.
Those “rrrs” are certainly unmissable. She sings absolutely every syllable.
Exquisite
Completely brilliant
I have never seen her this young!

The person who from Spain lyric was also one of the original lyrics there are so many lyrics to these songs they just decided they're better go with perfumes and cocaine silly Hollywood people
@@roderickfernandez5382 it wasn't tho, the lyric was specifically chosen because of the censors not wanting drug mentions in a movie under the absolutely puritanical rules of The Hayes Code
Magnificent
I see that the censors took out the original lyric " I get no kick from cocaine" and replaced it with perfume from Spain. I guess not every thing goes in early Hollywood.
The Hays Code was in effect by then. The Pre-Code era (which had the lax censorship you referenced) was already over.
And there's a beautiful glimpse of a beautiful young Ida Lupino as a blond just a little side treat
How can there only be one beer left?
long live the queen
Crosby made two pictures with Mary Martin. Rhythm On The River and Birth Of The Blues.
One beer please

There’s only one Beer Left
What must Merman have thought of the way they filmed this number? They make her brilliant interpretation a mere background for the dramatic action involving Bing Crosby. Reno becomes just a sideshow for the other characters.
I was confused by that as well. Although most of the attention was on her, I've seen worse, but they weren't treating her as the star of the show. Vocally I think she's superb. She still has a honey-like sound in her breathy like register that was less pronounced as she age and all of the heavy belting. Especially in the introductory verse. Her voice at this point also seems mostly vibrato free, which I love. I love the trademark grace note she does on the word "me" at around 2:15. The recorded versions she did of this song here and before are my fave versions of this song. Thank you, Mr. Porter, for writing this with La La La La Merm in mind.
She cashed her check and waddled off to the seashore like some beached whale. What the hell is wrong with you?
@@templedrake6890 A whale, what’s wrong with you?
She hated it.
@@templedrake6890 What is your problem??? Must be a Hollywood reject?
One of the very few instances of Hollywood doing a good job with a stage musical of this era. Other than Kiss Me Kate, Porter's never had great librettos, as he cheerfully admitted, since he only wrote the songs. But they used the songs. Maybe cleaned them up a bit. People still knew what was going on. ;)
Ethel as Reno Sweeny. Perfect
Fabulous! Classic nightclub scene.
Love ❤️ the Merms...ICK to Bing.
Portal me to this gorgeous place and place a glass of wine or whiskey into my hand.I'll spend lots of my nights there
Or you could get a cocaine "kick."
@@Muttonchop_USA no, thanks.
Then fuck off lol
ONE BEER. DOOM.
Isn't that fabulous Ida Lupino sitting all alone at the watching Lupino belt out a Cole Porter?
This is the lady from the movie Airplane.
I get a kick out of brew
1:19 belted D4?
MF DOOM sampled this at 1:00

Oh, that's just Lieutenant Hurwitz. He thinks he's Ethel Merman. 🤔
The original.😅 Jack Michael Gilroy, Army OSS.
❤️
Wow, Bing was gorgeous then
Ethel merman the screamer.
So what's YOUR major skill and contribution to the world of entertainment El Fisho ? Sweet FA I'll bet !
Somehow your opinion doesn't really matter... But you're free to have it!
She couldn't sing even in 1936. Ger voice and vibrato were atrocious, and here her phrasing is nonexistent. She was singularly devoid of talent.
Pity they had to change "I get no kick from cocaine" to "Some like that perfume from Spain." I wonder how many people today know that the entire song is one big drug joke?"
Not really. The coke line is the only reference in the entire song.
@@videocat1366 Alcohol is also a drug. On the other hand, flying is not.
I was going to write that too. I was looking for the cocaine lyric
Nobody. Coz it ain't. The song goes on and on beyond that line.
And stop trying to be all in-the-know "Pity! harumph!" doesn't become you, dearie.
Really great! But today's music is better... :)
That voice was popular, got jobs, for decades?
Different strokes.
talent ? she had the mot obnoxios voice in holliwood back then, and a personaity to match
She certainly had a different singing-style, and that's what appealed to people.
Well obviously Michelle she got a lot further than you did
Michelle Regis, your spelling and sentence construction leave a lot to be desired.
Ms Merman was known as ' the First Lady of the musical comedy stage ' , what have you done in your life?
Michelle you need to learn to spell better . Merman laughed all the way to the bank and remains the top ever on Broadway . She must have sone something right. The composers wrote songs for her and “Hello Dolly” was written for her and she turned it down and gave the role to some woman named ……Carol Channing .
Ho ho ho, is that what you think Michelle? He he he, well the joke is on you! Harr harr
I love all those 30s outfits!
