HHH will always be the definition of a “jack of all trades, master of none”. He’s no Rock, but he’s not god awful on the mic either (most of the time at least). He can’t wrestle like Shawn, but he can carry his weight in a main event capacity. He didn’t have much of a personality, but he always surrounded himself with people who did. Whether it was dumb luck or strategic, Paul certainly did play the game

Agreed. I think I almost entirely stopped watching RAW back in the early 2000s when he had his so-called 'reign of terror', and was just a Smackdown guy. To me, Triple H is on about the same level as Edge, i.e. a solid B+ player. Good to very good in most areas, but not great like Rock, Austin or Hogan.
Brian M I would put HHH at around an A-. Really all he was missing was a defining over-the-top personality trait that people can really latch on to. He’s kinda just Generic Badass Wrestling Man #63926

They don’t mention her cos they are a PG company & she did porn (mocking her ex employer btw), did drugs & grabbed Stephanie by the throat. She chose to do those things. Ok HHH shouldn’t have cheated but at the end of the day Chyna was an adult and was responsible for her actions. I think that Triple H's career without Stephanie would have been similar in success to Jericho in that he would have been a guy that would occasionally be in the main event and occasionally be champion, but he would not have been the constant presence at the very top without Stephanie. And then once he retired from the ring, he would have been an agent.
His entire career would have been different. He probably wouldn’t have even been at Jericho level.

He was only ever something before marrying steph because Shawn and nash where his buddies but he was mid card or upper mid card cause of shawn.If Shawn or nash never befriended him he would have never got far up the card and stayed there as long as he has . I like Triple h and he has skills,but he was looked over until he got some buddies that where tight with the boss and marrying steph made him. Happy for him though.

It's easy to shit on Triple H he's an easy target, but there is no denying the impact he has had on wrestling.
@TOMBSTONE SHADOW HHH would still be a hall of famer. the only thing that probably would've changed is the the evolution stuff and after. that's when he went off the deep end. he was already moving up the card with the DX stuff. he's still be a multi-time world champion and he probably would have a job in the back, but not as high up.
Still keeping the up and coming guys down, that's his legacy.

Funny thing about that match is that it was actually before the Madison Square Garden incident. Meaning it was before he got punished and was stripped of the opportunity to win King of The Ring. With that said, WWE did have plans for Triple H despite that. He won the intercontinental title that fall. Then the next year won the king of the ring. People like to say he got everything he had because of marrying Stephanie. Personally, I think he got everything he had hanging with Shawn Michaels. Think about it. Without DX, Triple H wouldn't have been able to form that edgier Triple H persona. What would he have been in 1998? Would he still be doing curtsies instead of crotch chops? DX propelled him into a guy that could conceivably be the top heel in 1999 and onward. I think we still would have gotten the Triple H that we got but like Cornette said, his front office influence would be non existent.

UFC was a horrible initial investment. Dana made it what it was and if it wasn’t for the casino backing it it would have folded and I don’t know if Vince would have had the patience to keep it running.

I think it's important to remember that had it not been for Triple H's close association with Nash and Hall, who got Vince to bring him up from WCW, and ultimately his later association with Shawn Michaels, because of Nash and Hall, that he never would have gotten his big push during the absence of The Rock and Steve Austin during the late 90's, eraly 00's.

Yes he was the top guy..... It's almost always the top face and the top heel. You need both and HHH was the top heel. There is almost never one top guy in wrestling. Only Hogan, Austin and Cena is arguably top guys with no heel opposition on their level. HHH was the top face when he returned from his knee injury and was the top heel most of his career. HHH was more over than the rock in there first big match on ppv at SummerSlam 98. The rock needed HHH to be on top and make things interesting just like how the batman story needs joker.

Alex Balin - I can’t see that, man. vince already wanted to can him for not being able to truly get over by HIMSELF. Throughout his entire career he has ALWAYS needed some type of cast of characters around him.
Being a lifelong tag wrestler and knowing your role in the business is one thing. But this dude ALWAYS needed something or someone to keep him hot, and couldn’t sustain it himself. That’s not a “star”. He was a place holder.

People forgot that Triple H was already a main eventer before he was married to Steph. If Hunter never married Stephanie, he wouldn't be as successful as he is now, but he still would have had a really good career and he would probably be an agent backstage.
One thing to remember, the push in Summer of 99 was going to Test (Andrew Martin). As Chyna herself said before she died, Triple H started cheating on her with Stephanie long before their relationship was public, because she found letters from Stephanie to him in his bag. The canceling of Test's push and endless Triple H push started AFTER he started secretly dating Stephanie, not before. It was ALL from Stephanie.
Triple H was already a main eventer at the time Test had angle with Steph.
Lets be fair here if Paul hadn’t married Stephanie he would’ve just been remembered as the guy who carried his best friends bags into the building if his best friend hadn’t had a severe back injury that nearly took him out indefinitely.
Not the guy that ended up in sack with the bosses daughter.
Jim said one time that he was a student of the game but he was with the guys (Austin, Rock) who were making the money.

But of course without marrying a Mcmahon, HHH probably would not have gotten the backstage role he enjoys now. But in ring wise, he would still have the same career, minus a few title reigns and big ppv wins.

LOTS of people got pushed before HHH started dating Stephanie, but none of them had the career he did after. Jericho, Big Show, Angle, Foley, Kane....the list of people who were in a similar spot to him prior is pretty big. And you can split hairs of "well so and so got fired, or had to retire", but that would have been the same case for Trips as well, without the relationship to fall back on.

The Undertaker is a prime example of never being fired because of his dedication and loyalty towards WWE, I’m not saying that Triple H would have been where he is if he didn’t marry Steph but he would have still been a top star and a very influential figure backstage 🔥

Hard as this is to believe, not much difference. With SCSA and the Rock out of the picture, he was the main guy, especially on Raw. It took a second for Cena to come into his own and HHH still had a little more pull than guys, like Benoit, Eddie, or JBL. He kept himself in good shape enough, not too many serious injuries.
If HHH hadn't gotten involved with Stephanie I'm not so sure he would've mowed over the other talent and been able to drone for so long on promos as he did in the 00s either.

Don’t really understand why everyone seems to think Triple H wouldn’t have been a major player without Stephanie. After HBK left, he was already being groomed to be a top guy. Leader of DX, feuding with Nation of domination and beating the rock for the IC title. Then winning his first world title in ‘99. All the motions were in place before he even got with Steph. Sure, he probably wouldn’t have the spot he has now and he may have won less world titles, but he would’ve been a long time main eventer without her as well. I feel like NXT was really stumped by the fact that it was initially supposed to be a beginners thing. You know, rookies trained by pros. Who wants to watch rookies when you have pros who are the best in the world? It kind of put a bad stigma on NXT and people aren't as interested as they could be if it weren't for that initial purpose for NXT. But I do agree Hunter has taken care of it well.

There was never a time when it wasn't a "friends and family" business. Would Vince have gotten to where he is if not for his dad? Or Bret without Stu? Or the Von Erich's? The list is endless.
Family connections help but talent and drive is still needed. David Flair is not a household name in wrestling, for example.
