I met him at his dad's camp and he's also an extremely organized guy and a really hard worker. Really nice dude, just in case you didn't know his name's Matt Keown.
1) Dutting keeps the line in sync and makes sure everyone comes in on time. 2) Marking time with legs is not a crutch, if anything it takes more skill to keep time with the legs while playing complex polyrhythmic phrases with the hands. 3) The instructor is there more as a musical guide than a time guide. 4) If you don't practice with a met. you'll never play in time. All these things are a part of practice and rehearsal, not performance (except dutting) and every line does these as standard.
That particular tick didn't look like a left thumb problem. He just used the wrong sticking, broke, and recovered. It's live music, it happens sometimes.
I know this comment is from a while ago, but I knew someone was going to say this haha. But he, Chris Bright, had problems with his left thumb, as it was unnatural (I can't remember the cause). If you look at his left thumb, it's bandaged. He was telling me over the season that his thumb was giving him lots of trouble. He made it on the 2012 line, but had to get out because of his thumb. And now you know! haha
@beastdrummer555 Indeed center tenor for 2009. Look up Bluecoats 2009 semi-finals and find the indoor one and his the spot light sometimes on the dots.
To all the people hating on the center snare or on the drumline: Stop trying to cover up your own insecurity because you either didn't make the line yourself or know that you never could. These guys are the best of the best and have all more than proven themselves on the field. So instead of leaving hate comments about top DCI drumlines based off of your own ignorant bias or jealousy, why don't you get off your computer and go practice.
i agree with you bro. he may have big teeth? who cares! he can play like a beast, and waaay better than a majority of the people who left bad comments.
thats like asking if a rock band can keep in time without a drummer. a drumline is a source of tempo, but those are tools to keep the unit as a whole at a singular tempo.
@spursfan4life yeah dude this is early season. any line, even the cavaliers, are gonna have dirt. listen to their finals tape and tell me if you think otherwise
@Wowurgaylol Haha, yeah I know no one breaks on purpose. But I meant its better to break and stay out, than to try and jump back in mid phrase and make it even dirtier. I was watching another Blue devil lot video where Andrew Odello, the guy to the left of the center, broke during this same section of the show, almost seemingly on purpose because he slowed down or sped up or something on a roll and decided to just stay out until the last muffled shot.
the issue isn't the thumb problem man. He can obviously play anything written in that book. And the thumb thing has nothing to do with using the wrong sticking. Watch closely and you can see ...
@StarCorpsProductions Honestly, I don't think the majority of those comments are hate comments. I think that most, if not all, people making comments like that realize that the BD drumline is sick and that they could probably never make it. They are simply joking around, not out of disrespect, but for the purpose of "trolling." Those people that always comment on youtube videos saying, "shut the fuck up" simply don't understand that...
@mbarker181 Just look at their hands. BD must have the easiest book to transcribe. Some lines I have to look at parts a few times to get the sticking or whatever but BD's beats seem simple. I'm not saying I'm better by the way cause I definitely don't have those chops
i tryed to dut like matt keown(center snare) the other day and i got light headed and almost passed out!! then i tryed to tell the football players at school drumline is harder then they think..... they said i was a pussy
...because he has (or had) problems with his thumb, like it didn't develop properly (instead of it being straight, it's bent IN, like at a right angle) his problem wasn't minor
not trying to hate as i know they are all great players and much better than i am and mabey its the camera but shit theres just no clarity. most noticable in the snareline especially in that opening feature.
I'm not trying to be mean, but the snare drummer with "buck-teeth" is hilarious. He's all serious but it is extremely difficult to take him seriously. He is awesome. lol.
I've never understood how people play like the snare left of center snare. It looks super uncomfortable to play with you left hand like that and looks like you would loose volume. Not saying people who play like that are bad just weird to me
the center snare doesnt kill the swag of the line, the dirt kills the swag. btw it's fucked up for yall to make fun of his looks he's just a kid who likes to drum like you
I met him at his dad's camp and he's also an extremely organized guy and a really hard worker. Really nice dude, just in case you didn't know his name's Matt Keown.
Abraham Im lol I’m going to his dads camp this summer, Alan was my drum coach’s drum coach.
Whoa! PC Principal was BD's center snare?!?!
?/
What?
@@TM-_-J I think he’s being a smart ass talking about the toothy guy playing center snare
1:10 "center snare looks like baraka from mortal kombat" hahahahaha
i dont know what i expected omfg
LOL

Scott Nelson looks so chill, and Nick Arce looks like he's gonna kill somebody.
Even though the center looks incredibly weird, he's a beast at playing AND dutting.
@drewdrummer7 No way! You're the guy with all the WGI/ DCI golds. Holy crap, you're my hero dude.
and these guys actually have a handful of flams in their licks
@beastdrummer555 Yup, he sure did. His name is Scott Nelson. Him and Nick Arce are childhood friends and played in RCC together on the quad line.
I know this comment is from a while ago, but I knew someone was going to say this haha. But he, Chris Bright, had problems with his left thumb, as it was unnatural (I can't remember the cause). I went to this show. It was soo sick.

Lol, it's entirely possible the dude just looked like a dweeb in this video.
that center snare totally kills the swag for the entire line
dont ever speak on matt keown
i agree with you bro. he may have big teeth? who cares! he can play like a beast, and waaay better than a majority of the people who left bad comments.
thats like asking if a rock band can keep in time without a drummer. a drumline is a source of tempo, but those are tools to keep the unit as a whole at a singular tempo.
0:40 you'll never make Nick flinch.
What ever happened to center snare dotting loud? Like finals and semi finals i heard nothing out of him.
@InnovativeKid
...hense the reason why the Cavies didn't wear sunglasses, yet took first in drums.
@spursfan4life yeah dude this is early season. any line, even the cavaliers, are gonna have dirt. listen to their finals tape and tell me if you think otherwise
At about :42 the q5 are the 4 most badass people in the entire universe
did the quad on the far left march bluecoats?
No more Dynasty?
that's way cleaner than the Cavilier clip uploaded by this same youtube user
When is this in the season? The basses had white drums at finals.
is that a 2010 bluecoats snare in there?
did keelan get cut?
@Wowurgaylol Haha, yeah I know no one breaks on purpose. But I meant its better to break and stay out, than to try and jump back in mid phrase and make it even dirtier. @fchguy a lot of people have marched more than one corps. she likes both of them. so she marched both of em :P
@1sikpup look at the "BLING" on his neck..... looks heavy...
Whoa whoa whoa! When did BD play lots!? How long before shows was this?
Where is Keelan??
@StarCorpsProductions Honestly, I don't think the majority of those comments are hate comments. @1sikpup at least it makes his "dut, dut, dut..." look more aggressive!!
@duke2757 I had to keep rewinding that, like it was so suttle, i didn't think anyone noticed that besides me haha like he stopped playing for a second
@duke2757 I was just watching for the visual at :10, but none the less it was a rather discrete mistake, and a good recovery.
Oh Great !!
AND his dad own offworld drumpads
center snare is cheesin so hard
@forzaitalia5910 How?
@fchguy
yeah i cant believe she left..
Damn...center snare has some chompers...
LOL his dad doesn't own offworld. It's a very tight knit family here in the NW though and I'm sure him and his dad give input.
i love a good drumline pokerface
maybe slightly tighten or loosen the bottom snares... he wouldnt do much while they were playing like that
@mbarker181 Just look at their hands. BD must have the easiest book to transcribe. Some lines I have to look at parts a few times to get the sticking or whatever but BD's beats seem simple. I'm not saying I'm better by the way cause I definitely don't have those chops
those tenors
@StarCorpsProductions Oh, okay. It seemed like you were scolding people for joking around about that guy's teeth.
@theCultureShockband Oh, my bad. But i still love him. lmao
nothin can touch bd quads
You're a great american.
@Superunknownful haha I know.
Anyone else notice left of center break at :09 before the shot. '_' poker face

Do you have eyes dumbass
That dirty ass snare line.. in a bad way.
That a dirty ass quad line in a good way.
Napoleon dynamite is their center?
i tryed to dut like matt keown(center snare) the other day and i got light headed and almost passed out!! then i tryed to tell the football players at school drumline is harder then they think..... they said i was a pussy
pause after :15 proof that even the best in the world aren't perfect
I don't see anything what
Asuna yuuki i think hes referring to :09 where the dude next to center broke
Ohhh now I see, Thanks
swear spit came out the screen when he said the duts
...because he has (or had) problems with his thumb, like it didn't develop properly (instead of it being straight, it's bent IN, like at a right angle) his problem wasn't minor
Oh wow i thought he did lol but i think his dad works there i think
@fchguy i love you too
I can't be the only one who shits his pants at 0:19

does the center snare have a mouth guard on, or just has the worst over-bite ever?
I've never understood how people play like the snare left of center snare. It looks super uncomfortable to play with you left hand like that and looks like you would loose volume. Not saying people who play like that are bad just weird to me
@Wowurgaylol Its better to break and keep the solo clean than to stay in and make it dirty. Just saying.
the center snare doesnt kill the swag of the line, the dirt kills the swag. btw it's fucked up for yall to make fun of his looks he's just a kid who likes to drum like you
when the hell did gary busey make snare line?
@MilkMuscles lol ikr

@ppgray22 I'm DYING.
You could literally b*tch slap Nick and he wouldn't flinch.
@forzaitalia5910 yet you'll never be as good as him.
@forzaitalia5910 Lmao your right, thats hilarious.
Seriously though, looks don't matter when it comes to performing, besides stick heights
snare line looks like robots...
@reddishmango nope

center snare has a mouth guard? lmao
@Percnumber1 Dut.
