  • For Veterans Day, 60 Minutes looks back to our report on the brotherhood of the Marines who served in Afghanistan's most lethal battles. The veterans told Scott Pelley in 2015 about their struggle transitioning back to civilian life.
"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

It's unbelievable how such men sacrifice so much for the sake of the nation and in the end they feel so forgotten by the very ones who needed them so much to fight our battles ,but when they need the nation to help them get through their struggles, we simply count them as another one on the list to face depression, unemployment and unfortunately suicide.

True that, all you wrote. while the bond (and scars) shared among those who gave is truly Special, unique. Sacred, the cornerstone & bedrock of any civilization & culture that has not been conquered by another. We're down to about 4% doing multiple tours vs WWII where nearly every able bodied male served.

My advice to today's veterans: When you return from combat and are discharged, you still are on a mission. your goal is to live life the best you can, your country and family are depending on your strength - still. Don't do it, don't do it - that is go the route of suicide. If you do, you are like a loss in battle, given up to the enemy! Don't ever give up to the enemy!!

tough mission, another tough mission. not easy no matter how prepared, takes years. many years to get past scars. the reward of, see & recognize. the best way to serve your buddies waxed is to live the life they wished for. They'd hate to see you not.

Yes my little country sent in our finest SAS and others. Yes little New Zealand was there as we were in Vietnam, Korea, WW2 etc. We were also fighting the Commies in places the US wasn't like Singapore, Borneo, Malaysia plus others.
My question is after 9/11 there is no doubt that we had to be there with our Buddies from the USA; but virtually all of the 9/11 Suicide Bombers were Saudis. So why didn't we attack Saudi?
GW Bush started so many wars! Why did he attack Afghanistan? History had proven that the Greeks couldn't do it, and the Romans couldn't do it, even the mighty British Empire could only do it for a short time, and then the mighty Soviet Empire couldn't do it so what the F was GW trying to prove....he had got all this global support after 9/11 and he had to find a war because that is what retribution looks like! Daah! Even the Russians helped us and the US.
And then Iraq and the WOMD?
This is what the GOP does to the US and us. And its next guy is Donald J Dump, an insurrectionist, a terrorist, it saddens me greatly to see what has happened to the US as it impacts us here in New Zealand. Donald Trump/Dump would betray the US and us all in a flash. Just listen to the lies out of his mouth!
The last great Republican President was Ronald Raegan. Donald Dump is amorally bankrupt human being living off his own excrement! Please USA its not just about your US its about our us.

Why so much suicide? 6:00 - you send soldiers into a foreign land as an invader first, an occupier second. The cognitive dissonance of kicking in doors and shooting at people while they're defending their own homeland, then coming back stateside and being called a hero for those deeds while the images of your deeds flash before you nightly, keeping truth front and center. There is one script, just a changing cast of characters: MIC wants $, it needs young souls to grind up in exchange for $, those brave souls serve to protect their country yet then get sent to the other side of the world to liberate (invade) and do battle with insurgents (homeland defenders) for years and years with no victory in sight, all in exchange for platitudes and a quick erasure from history, dropped from cable news and speeches, to forget the losses, on to the next conflict (money pit). Number of U.S. soldiers killed in combat since 2001: 7,057. Number of U.S. soldiers who've committed suicide since 2001: 30,177. All the leadership has to say, during every mis-adventure to hell, (6:09) "You are going to change history." A few trillion $ down the tube, a few thousand U.S. dead, and the Taliban are richer and more powerful than ever before. MIC got theirs.

I did two tours in Iraq as a USMC infantryman. I knew many guys that did more tours in afghanistan. I personally did not lose any friends in combat, however, Ive lost at least five since then, if not more. I lost track. The last one was not long after the collapse of afghan in 2020. I will always wonder if its downfall caused him to take a fatal dose of drugs. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were truly a massive waste. We were all so eager to join after 9/11 and in retrospect it was all for nothing. You will find guys that try to justify it like in this video, but deep down inside they all know. Whatever helps them sleep at night I guess. I have considered, and still consider burning my uniforms and covering my USMC tattoo.

And the greatest loss that a person loses in this life is that he lives while he does not know God who created him, knowing the Messenger of Muhammad, the last of the messengers, and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions. The great intelligence, before you believe in something or not, is to read it, study it, and understand it well, and then you have the choice to believe in it or not. I advise you on this now before you do not have time to do that.

I unfortunately disagree. In this country right now, the attitude seems to be that we gloss over the war of the last 20 years and sweep a lot of it under the rug. And I don't think that the legislature of our home really cares about vets, they just post on occasion and say what is deemd acceptable and expected. I encourage everyone to go back to Rory's interview and really take a look. Because that is a man that was fighting for his life, and ask yourselves if you can see it in his face or not. Please take care of yourselves. We are all Americans and this is a collective burden.

22 vet take their own lives each day. I can tell you from firsthand experience that in the vet groups I’m in, it’s not uncommon to hear from at least one vet a day who isn’t in distress. This is the week before Thanksgiving 2023. It will only get worse in the next several weeks. Stay in touch with father’s, son’s, wives and daughters who have served.
