Lots of folks have asked me about when to root cuttings. Propagate your blackberry cuttings in the fall or winter when the plant is dormant!! That is when you will have the most success!
It is early Spring right now where I am, we have growth coming through the fence that I figured I could cut and propagate but would propagating still work right now, maybe less chances? Worth trying since we have to cut that branch anyways. 💚🫶🏼
@@GetSchwifty_94it will work, I have done it , you will have probably 30% less succeed but they will root
@@GetSchwifty_94 you can definitely try!! You also do tip layering in the spring/summer. That’s where you bury the tip of a large cane in the ground
I just bend my cane over to the ground and set some kind of light but heavy enough weight (normally a small rock ) to keep it on the ground. I do my rosemary and raspberries the same way.
That’s a great way to do it as well
Thanks!
That is my preferred way.
Same!
You can boil willow branch cuttings to make your own rooting agent. There are youtube videos on making willow water
Or use aspirin and aloe vera. Works too.
Makes even me want to plant blackberries! I do love them!
They are so easy
I have only done tip layering before to multiply my blackberries as I was told it was more reliable. I made 9 new plants from this and made a short video but taking cuttings like this has the potential to get way more. Cuttings in the past have been slow and not successful but I will try again with your tips and the rooting powder. just subscribed, thanks.
I’ve never experimented with tip layering but I’ll have to try it out. Thanks for commenting!
Thank you brother your video was actually very helpful. You did way better than the vast majority of people uploading videos on here. I mean youexplained each part of the process clearly, quickly, & effectively without moving at a snails pace or doing little stupid skits or jokes wasting anyone's time but u also didnt go too fast where we'd have to keep rewinding just to hear what you say & God forbid if we want to take notes. I always have to skip through a bunch of b.s., rewind, or pause a million times with other people's videos not that I don't like long videos/podcasts/documentaries about all of this or people throwing jokes & what not in the mix of explaining but sometimes I just need the information so I can go do it really quick. Also f.y.i. since you didn't make it a big deal or say it over & over but just politely an casually asked on top of the good video I actually did like, share, & subscribe which trust me I quite literally almost never do even just 1 of those but I went ahead & did all 3 for u brother. All I say & ask is keep up the good work & content & maybe return the favor thinking about starting my own channel on here and sharing my "journey" of next years grow season which I'm starting to get everything set up that I can at the moment before winter does officially get here( I live in middle Tennessee about 45mins to 1 hour north of the Alabama border)
My blackberries are doing their best efforts to take over my entire yard they’re fighting with the kudzu for and winning 😂
Thank you!! I love my blackberry bushes!
Never worked with blackberries but you have given me the confidence to try!
You can have some of these cuttings once they root! Y’all can plant a couple of em at your new home once it’s complete :)
Awesome I can’t wait to try it! Thanks for the tips
Mine are taking over my little garden, going to move them to a better spot on the property. Thanks!
About to be my problem too. I’m gonna move to along a chain linked fence. Hopefully the neighbors on the other side love blackberries
Thank you, Mr. Dirk, thank you.
Good work I love all the propagating videos and love gardening so the videos u make help many people along their journey. Thanks
Thank you!!
Thank you! You were concise and informative. I subscribed so I can learn some more!
Thank you for the encouraging comment!!
I cut several inches off the top of two of my canes, trimmed the leaves off and then stuck them in buckets of potting soil. I did not have any of that rooting agent, so not sure what to expect. I’m as dumb as dirt but sure have enjoyed working with my blackberries. Thanks for the info!!
That’s great! It’s always worth trying to experiment with things! Keep me updated on them
@@tannerfarmstead Naw. It didn’t work. I got no new growth on either pot. But you should see the new growth on the canes where I took the cuttings. Both of the original canes have exploded with new growth that would be my flora canes, I guess. Lots of new blooms. Looking like a fall crop.
Thank you for this! Especially the part at the end about the freedom BlackBerry. I posted a video of mine on my channel and I completely forgot that the one I had was a prime ark freedom! Thank you so much!
Will try some next winter. Thanks.
Thank you for the simple propagation video
You are welcome
Going to give this a try
Beat video I've found so far ! Thanks so much been having trouble propagating wild Bush's .. this will help I hope !
Thanks Ryan! So glad I could be helpful!! Let me know how it goes!
@@tannerfarmstead I liked the white table top and the close up camera so we could see what you were talking about.
I luv the name pure American luv it 🇺🇲🍀💚🤍🧡🍀 🇮🇪
Your channel is growing bro. Watching from Asia. Thank u for your information. I have a BlackBerry plant and will propagate soon.
Thanks for your encouragement! Happy to help!
See this video, took me ages to find you again lol.. thanks for the tips
Thanks for sharing! We are about to do some cutting! Still have a foot of snow on the ground so it wont be for a few weeks. 😀
My pleasure!! Hopefully that snow will melt soon!
Glad I found you from SE Oklahoma! Good video
Thank you!! Glad I could help
Thanks!!!
We have a few wild black berry bushes on the farm that I have found, but I’m going to try to mix up some varieties. Me and my pops wants to start growing more things so going to give some berry’s a go
That’s awesome. Just make sure to wait until late fall after the plant has gone into dormancy to take and root the cuttings
Thanks
Thank you for sharing
My pleasure
Trying this. Thx yo!
Great video. Appreciate it.
Glad it was helpful!
Well it's high summer so I'll have to wait, but I came to this video as I found a great early growth shrub just thirty seconds from my house I hadn't noticed in the three years I've lived here! Gonna get snipping in the autumn.
Perfect!
@@tannerfarmstead do you have a similar video on doing this with woody tree branch ends? There's a mulberry tree in town I want to take a cutting of, but unsure of what do with it when I get home.
Thank you sir very helpful
Most welcome
Thanks bro
Man really helpful video!! Thank You so much man!
P.s. with all due respect, You’re exceptionally beautiful man.
Excellent video-new sub!
I just got some cuttings -it’s 4/11/22 in 5b growing zone and was wondering if they can be outside or if it’s something where they need to be inside?
Thanks!
Thanks! I would put them under grow lights in a warm environment or a southern facing window seal
Great
Thanks!
Great info. Keep in mind that if you are propagating plants for sale you need to check the parent plant for patents. Prime Ark freedom is a great variety but it is patented as APF-153T from the University of Arkansas. So anyone following along feel free to propagate it but dont sell unless you have the license from the patent holder. You can sell the fruit and leaves tho.
Yea you are right. So anyone reading this- you can’t sell them because it’s patented
Maybe I missed something here. What is the best time of year to do these cuttings? From the look of the plants and the cloths, I'm guessing it is in the middle of the growing season.
🌻
Does it have to be at the base or can it be a bit further up cause we have these grown wild reel close to a very busy road and we where thinking of taking cuttings and growing them somewhere that their is less pollution
Aloe Vera also works as a good rooting compound.
😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you for sharing ideas which time/season is best to propagate then?
Winter time is best for propagation. You want to take cuttings and propagate when the plant is in dormancy
Great video! I live in MO zone 5, and I recently took some blackberry stem cuttings as you suggested, but I can't seem to find whether or not these cuttings require a stratification period. Can I just pot up the cuttings as you suggested and wait until spring to plant them outdoors (they would quickly freeze if I put them in the ground now)? Thanks for hour help.
Yes pot up and keep indoors until spring
They don't necessarily need a stratification period, but berries (such as blackberries and raspberries) do work on a 2 year cycle. First year the canes grow, second year they produce fruit. So the first year, into the second that you plant a cutting it will just grow. Cuttings can be a little less hardy too, so keeping them indoors or using mulch is a good idea.
Keep in mind the growing cycle of these plants and be prepared for it to take a few years to be productive
A new experiment. The root harmone is more for causing calluses so roots can form from the bud so I may try this
I’m going to try this with my blackberry plants. Questions: I’m in Kansas City - zone 6. So if I am doing the trimming and planting in the fall do I keep them in a south windo, keep them under gro lights or what until I plant them in the spring? Also, will they bear fruit year 1. Thanks. Great video.
Yes that’s perfect
Damn. Wish my dog would clean up brush for me.
Hello from Scotland ! I’m def going to try this, what about watering? I’ve never had any luck repotting but never did it this way. How much water would be good to know too as I think I’ve drowned mine🙈 in past. Thanks 🙏 ( subscribed)
I just typically mulch really heavy and I don’t water very often unless it’s super hot and dry out
Dog also trimming bushes
Please advice if they can grow in north Canada where temp drop to -45 c
Thank you
They won’t unless you are growing in a heated greenhouse or GAHT greenhouse system that stays somewhat warm
After they have roots and a leaf or 2 do you put them in the ground and mulch for winter since you propagate cuttings in fall?
You could try that or just let me grow indoors through winter until early spring and then transplant. Use a grow light or the window seal through the winter
I have two mature thornless blackberry bushes (now). To prune yearly what is your advise? I have plenty of berries each year but I don't usually prune them except for the vines that get too high too reach. I will re-structure my t-posts like in your video to make it stronger. My yard is very small compares to yours.
Here’s a great article on pruning blackberries from Stark Bro’s: www.starkbros.com/growing-guide/how-to-grow/berry-plants/blackberry-plants/pruning#:~:text=Prune%20trailing%20blackberries%20in%20the,3%2D4'%20in%20midsummer.
This is a great video,
where can I get more Natchez tips?
Thank you! I’m not sure on the Natchez tips
I learn better hands on. Can u host a propagation class! 🤣🤪
Thanks for the video man!
Yes that’s a great idea!
Send me the sign up list!
First request was…50% off... or so I heard. 😜 😂
I haven’t had luck with propagating from cuttings but tip cuttings work amazingly well. Did you have decent results?
Yes we have great results. The tips do root better than the older parts of the canes but still will root. We probably get 80% that take root
Just April now. I'll try in Sept. If it works I'll tell you,& keep subscribed. You say in a few weeks leaves start growing. If you'd put that stage in the video it would have gone viral with the folks.
It will definitely form leaves in several weeks if done properly. Hope it goes well this fall when you try!
@@tannerfarmstead Now I'm sunk. The two freedoms were going like crazy. there was a spraying nearby of roundup. I was not informed. My two freedoms caught some. Now the new growth is chlorosis, & slow. Any ideas?
I have many canes that are on the ground that seem to be trying to root. If some do root when do you cut the cane from the main plant? Im so new to blackberries and i am unsure when to cut them
As they have starting setting some good roots then cut from main stem and dig up and pot up or plant
Oh and our temp at moment is around 18 degrees…… soon to drop 😵💫
Have you tried this with wild blackberries, thorned ones?
I have not
Hey Dirk thanks for your tips! I don’t have root powder on me but I’ll probably try this anyways!
You got any blueberries?
Glad I could help! I don’t have any blueberries
Aloe Vera works well as a rooting compound
It is possible to do in the spring when the bush is already starting to flower?
I’ve never had success doing it in spring once plant is out of dormancy, but you can try another method called tip layering. A lot of folks have success with that when the plant is out of dormancy
When do you replant them after you get the roots on them
Anytime from spring through the early fall
Do you have latest video on the propagated blackberries?
I do not. I ended up neglecting these blackberries while working on other project. I’m going to start some more tho soon and will do a follow up video
Can you trim in fall and then keep inside over winter ? I’m in zone 6
Yes! That’s best way to do it
When is the right time of the year to plant them and where to keep them? Inside or outside since we live in Chicago area as one of the coldest place in the nation?
Thank you in advance
Keep inside in window seal or under grow lights until spring. You can plant out in early spring but make sure to harden off the plant before transplanting it into the ground
How tall does each cutting grow in one year?
sản phẩm kích rễ là gì vậy bạn?
Ok I’m going to give it a go in March
I’m zone 5b
Does that still work? We still ate in freezing condition
Yes that should be good. How did it go?
Good video. When do you transplant the blackberry plants?
The following spring or once the plant has developed a good root ball and some foliage
Use honey for rooting
Hmm Fall leads to winter here in Ohio and snow.. it sounds logical but where are you suppose to put these plants during the winter months? Anna In Ohio
You will need to put them inside under grow lights in a climate controlled environment. Or a sunroom or heated greenhouse
Since this was done 8 months ago, how do your propagation turn out? How many rooted and made it through the summer?
I neglected them during a winter storm so I don’t have an update for you unfortunately
@@tannerfarmstead So, you kept them outside? I thought so, but I wondered if they would make it.
@@watermelonlalala I accidentally left that batch outside. I have a new batch indoors right now and most all of them rooted under grow lights
Is that a green primocane, that grew this year and would fruit next year?
Yes
What about winter. Do ya keep them inside or out in the cold ?
Indoors under grow lights or in a window seal
Why does it need to be in the dormant phase? Can this still work in spring/summer? 🙏 many thanks
I’m no expert on the subject but all I know is that I’ve never had success with propagating blackberry cuttings when the plant is actively growing. The most success I’ve had is prior to the plant budding in the spring or in the fall/winter after the plant has gone into dormancy
I’m just learning propagation so I have a lot of questions. You said late fall-early winter is the time to take the cuttings. I have a source for cuttings but
I thought I needed to wait till dormancy - late winter. Dec-Jan). Could you clarify. I can get them now (Oct 17), but is it better to wait? So much to learn. Thank you.
I’ve seen people root blackberry cuttings out of dormancy successfully however I lean towards dormancy to gather the cuttings and root them. I’m definitely not an expert with propagation but I do know best time is during dormancy
@@tannerfarmstead Thanks! That’s all I need to know now. 🙏🏻👍🏼
Glad to help!! Keep me updated on how it goes with the roofing
Rooting**
What to do if they cannot grow do to soil type..... northern mn
You can amend the soil
do you have to use the rooting powder?
You don’t have to. Some folks say they use honey. I’d recommend something tho
Give us an update on those cuttings.
I neglected them last year during an ice storm
Do you have to use the rooting powder ?
Yes
Can you cut at any time of year? My question being can you do this with a flowering blackberry bush or while it’s fruiting? Thanks
I’ve just seen you reply to someone else that winter is best. I’ll wait till then, thanks
You can try but it needs to be during winter when the plant is in dormancy. Cuttings won’t do well being propagated in middle of summer. You can try tip layering tho as another method this time of year to start more plants
In the video you said the links to the rooting powder and cutter were in the description but I couldn't find them there. Can we get those links or the product name?
If you go to my Amazon store front the links will be under gardening supplies
I have a question? You say you are doing this at the end of the growing season. These new
Cutting will just be taking hole, when it is starting to get cold. Will the cold kill them if there
Planted outside???
Correct, I’ve found most success taking cuttings when the plant is in dormancy (late fall/winter) and then rooting the cuttings inside. Or else yes they will not make it left outside
Hello, do you use a cane that has had berries on it yet? Thanks!
You can use either cane but don’t use a cane that has already fruited and is dead wood
@@tannerfarmstead Thank you!
My pleasure!!
Can you do it without rooting powder?
You can try!
I found a small blackberry plant growing wild in my yard. It has thorns, so I know it's not they type sold in stores. I replanted it in a different spot and it grew a bit bigger this summer, but still no fruit. I'm wonder if I could use your technique to get some more plants. After you cut and replanted those stems, do you leave them outside in the winter or bring them indoors?
Some blackberries don’t fruit on first year vines so that may be the case. No I left them inside to get establishing but I then put them outside when it was nice out during the winter and then neglected them during a winter storm
Will raw honey do the same thing as rooting powder? I have honey already.
I have no clue but give it a try!!
Aloe Vera works as a rooting compound.
Went by the local home depot, they just got a shipment of BlackBerry healthy vines in and i was looking at the 2 varieties. One was suitable for my area but when i got to looking, every single one was rooted upside down. Wth?
Went back today, about 10 days later, now that variety the stalks are all turning brown and dying off. Bummer. Other variety had leaves and was sprouting out. Just not premium for my area. Musta been a new hire. Idk.
what time of year do you propagate these?
Fall/winter
does it matter what time of the year you start blackberry cuttings? also, does it matter which branches you use- flowering branches or new growth?
@@tannerfarmstead Thank you! I am about to prune my blackberries, so I will give it a try. I appreciate your answer :)
Let me know how it goes!
Your goat was behind you eating your plants
Do you have to soak them in water right away or can you wait a few days?
I’m not sure on that. We immediately get them dipped in rolling powder and stuck into moist soil
@@tannerfarmstead thank you so much that was very nice of you to answer me. I have another question I’m using regular sticks to mount my cucumber bushes. The leaves are poisonous. With the branches be the same and would that be a bad decision to mount use that would to mount my vegetables
Don't forget... Water the pots FROM THE BOTTOM. Don't water-log, just less than an inch every week poured into the trench container that holds them all
How are these doing for you? How have you over wintered them?
They are doing great. I pruned back any old dead wood
@@tannerfarmstead how are you over wintering the cuttings you propagated?
I’m sorry I thought you were referring to a different video. I’ve kept them inside to plant out this spring
@@tannerfarmstead are you just keeping them moist? Grow light?
Yes keeping soil moist and under grow lights and I’ll put them outside some on warm days
So, you said do it in the fall. What about us northern boys?
Do it in fall or winter. Just do it when the plant is dormant
Can you answer questions on this?
Yes I’ve answered most all questions on here
Where you located ?
Arkansas
Mine have thorns why doesnt yours?
It’s a thornless variety
If the plant has a patent , you can legally propagate for yourself , but selling the propagated plants is illegal and considered patent infringement by the Courts , I am not a Lawyer just words to the wise !
Much Blessings to you, is this only in America?
