Kerry king is awesome but he is very methodical in his playing. Eddie van Van Halen is like that too. They are both very good at what they do but it has to be something that they have written themselves.
Well he just posted on his Instagram the other day that skynyrd are the greatest American Rock band of all time. So its probably safe to assume he knows quite a few of them.
@@90s267 now who’s the pissed off one? It’s not easy, it’s just not hard. It has all of the tricks of the trade when it comes to pentatonic. So it’s not hard to lock in on the phrases.

MIDDLEFINGER to those that don't like this . away from slayer at home in his car he listens to LYNYRD SKYNYRD that's why he played this song so a big MIDDLEFINGER to the ones that dislike this
What some people don't know is when Slayer formed they met with Jeff and Jeff was playing in a band that did Southern rock and covers by Molly Hatchet, etc. So even though Jeff has been gone, this doesn't surprise me. Who doesn't know Free Bird??
Gary Holt, Tom Araya, Alex Skolnick, and what I assume to be Paul Bostaph. That's a crazy fuckin' line up right there. (Exodus, Slayer, Testament, Forbidden all in one, playing Free Bird!!!!)
Paul Bostaph is such a cool & humble guy… and he holds down a damn tight rhythm section.. sure, his double kick isn’t as solid as it used to be in the 90s.. but probably neither is Lombardo or any other drummer for that matter.
He knows his instrument, Ill give him that, and Ive been a Testament fan for years and have seen him play in his other projects live. But feeling /soul lacks in his sound ,its all technical, almost like someone who can copy, and that’s fine. Read his book too, kind of up his own ass. He’s still attractive though and an odd cat. It is what it is.
Back in the day, while been already a thrash kid, I got into bands like ZZTop, Allman Bros, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and stuff, that's when Lynyrd Skynyrd became one of my favorite bands ever. This jam is like experiecing one of those strange but satisfying dreams.
Thing is, most people can't just stick with one genre. Life would be boring then. I was a kid in the 70's, turning 13 in 1980. Was raised by my young parents who listened to, what is now, classic rock. Grew up a headbanger through my teens, loved new wave and even whatever dance music was called back then. Still a heavy duty headbanger, and the only music I don't really like is the "manufactured" pop garbage with the auto tune voices that are so BLAHHHHH! Still lots of great music coming out!
I saw Lynrd Skynd play Free Bird live and it was mind blowing. One of the coolest concert performances I've EVER f--cking seen. I've seen Slayer shows too and their right up there with Free Bird.
i give slayer 100 percent i always crank this song up slayer has always been one of my favorite hard rock heavy metal thrash metal bands rest in peace jeff
Oh man this is too funny! It is cool to see these guys just jamming’ out. I am a huge fan of both of these bands and love this song as well. On their last tour these guys would always jam out for sound check. Rock on thanks for the upload 🤟🤟🤟
I was expecting from Tom something more like a "won't you fly hiiiiigggghh FREEEE BIIIIRRRRDDDDD AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"
I had a friend that worked one of their shows tell me they played a crazy selection of old radio hits, including some R&B stuff during their soundcheck but I can't remember any song names other than it sounded weird that Slayer would play them but only during their soundcheck.
+Ishbu 101 You say 30 years ago Slayer would never do a Skynyrd cover! Well 39 years ago they did a Iron Butterfly cover of in-a-gadda-da-vida. Which totally rocked!
Gary Holt is a class act. You can see how he loves playing music, regardless of what it is, he just loves being up there playing guitar and having an amazing time. Holt, is King - no he owns King! Haha.
Simonize41 yes he does the old guitar battles between Mr Style ( Gary Holt ) and Mr. Speed( Rick Hunolt ) in Exodus were classics, Hunolt was and is much faster than Gary , Gary had more solos but we're much slower compared to Rick's
I yell SLAYER at Country concerts when I work security.
Tom Araya sings country songs. He lives on a ranch in Buffalo, Texas.
Tom and his wife were very nice to me when I met them years ago.
That sounds like something I would do 😂😂😂😂
thank you for being that guy. we need more like you
You'd be suprized how many country musicians know some SLAYER.
Kerry King: "Ya'll have fun, I aint playing that shit on camera."
He said that lol?
No, that is the response "I" would expect. As well as Alex chiming in, " I'll do it!" As he waves his hand in the air frantically.
So why Kerry did not participate?
awhahahahahahahaha
Kerry king is awesome but he is very methodical in his playing. Eddie van Van Halen is like that too. They are both very good at what they do but it has to be something that they have written themselves.
Holt and Skolnick!! What a monster guitar duo!!
If they recorded this in the studio and released it as a single would be a hit.
This is cool, now I want to see Lynyrd Skynyrd do Angel of Death!
Considering they're all dead, the angel of death would need to introduce them.
thank you internet..you never let me down.
Brilliant! Never did I imagine that one day I'd hear Slayer, or actually Tom Araya and friends, play Lynyrd Synyrd's 'Freebird'. Love it!
LOL and you still haven't heard them play it. You've just heard them TRY.
Sounds like this 👉💩 this is what happens when bands get old
Can we just appreciate that Tom still has fabulous hair
Not to mention the beard🤘
You realize this video is from 2016 yes?
@@douchymcdouche169 I can barely tie my shoes
5 years later. This is is still one of my favorite Slayer video. Wish there's more.
That was cool. Funny how Gary knew the solo cold. Obviously has learned it. 2 Great guitar players.
The solo itself isn't difficult. Just iconic

I'm just guessing but that song may be one of their soundcheck songs. It's dynamic and tests multiple instruments in different tempos.

Alex Skolnick is such a beast guitarists
he couldn't string allen Collins guitar. nobody and I mean nobody can play the bird like allen collins
@@bisp2581 bet Collins can't play Skolnicks stuff either. Why compare them?
Skolnick definitely one of the most underrated guitar players of the last couple decades

Tom is an amazing singer...
I saw in another interview that Tom was talking about doing some very non Slayer style solo stuff. Should be interesting.
Evil D I can see him doing some Metal Country music which would be cool
you know these guys grew up listening to this song and it was a great soundcheck
I will slay like a bird now✨🤘🏻
You know something great is happening when everyone stops and starts filming.
slayer wow i love the way they do this song ronnie would be so proud slayer always gets 100 percent
Freakin awsome meeting of the Guitar god's, they cut the best bit out at the end when the old Bay area shredders were about to hug.
So adorable how these kids played this for their high school. I applaud their effort
Happy thing is that you have probably seen Araya slapping his bass live after a long time
Side project called Slay-Her
Just awesome really ,very well done
awesome slayer makes this song sound so heavy great job guys
Not bad at all... I think they should consider doing this in the studio.
Too late
I was expecting from Tom something more like a "won't you fly hiiiiigggghh FREEEE BIIIIRRRRDDDDD AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"
yea that doesnt sound like Tom at all
Like the high-pitched shriek in "Angel of Death"? LOL
absolutely! lol
He doesn't do any screaming during soundcheck.
WE LOVE IT IN OUR UKRAINE WHILE FIGHTING FOR OUR NATIONAL FREEDOM !!!
Awesome! gave me goosebumps
This is just....AWESOME!!!!!!!
Did i just witness Araya thumb slappin' and finger poppin'?!
Voitcu what happened to Kerry king man did he quit slay?
Slayer did he quit?
Thumb slapping, he didn't pop
This performance gives everything: Tom singing with clean vocal, using sunglasses, playing with fingers and even with slap in the end.

that was awesome!
alex is into wayyyyyy more than anyone else.

Please cover this on the next album.

Slayer did not cover Iron Butterfly in the 70s.
Holt and Skolnick together... DAMN!
This might be the greatest thing that ever happened.
Finally Tom has come back to his roots!!! Finger picking the strings like the early days!!!!
This is so cool.i never heard tom araya play like this.it is awesome..now.i don't feel so bad when I try something out of my comfort zone

GUITAR GOD. ALEX SKOLNICK
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
the reason he's singing so "badly" is because this is a sound check.
he probably doesn't care too much to hit the right notes.
Slayer could cover Justin Beiber and make it sound awesome. That's how amazing Slayer is.
They don't cover many songs (which is fine) but when they cover, it's amazing. But the best covers are Motörhead covers 🤘🏻
When I was playing in bands back in the day someone would yell either Free Bird or Slayer at every single one of our shows. Sometimes both lol
The crew is walking around not realizing how epic this is. Just another day on the job. haha
Wish this could be cleaned up. Such a good version.
