I am a daughter of a Vietnam Vet and an Assistant Funeral Director. An important part of our job is to know how to properly fold our flag, present it to a family and say the correct speech. Today, I am showing a new AFD how to fold our flag. I take it as an honor. Thank you for this video. Thank you for your service.
Thanks, guys! I'd like to add that this is also the proper way to prepare an old worn-out flag that is going to be retired. After the worn-out flag is properly folded, you can take it to an American Legion or VFW Post. They can take the old flag for proper disposal and some have drop boxes for old flags. DO NOT put your old worn-out flags in the trash. Long Live the Republic!
Thank you for this video. I did a flag detail in Kuwait in 2012-2013 and this has been a good refresher. From one vet to another, thank you for your service 🇺🇸
I was handed a properly folded flag in 1968 at my father's funeral ... I was 4 years old. I am now a few months away from 60 years old and a dispatcher at a public transit company. I have been teaching my drivers, for many years, how to properly fold a flag after it is lowered each night. I still struggle sometimes to show no blood, but I am always amazed at how many people, even military veterans, have never seen a flag properly folded. Thank you for your service and your continued service in teaching how to properly fold Old Glory.
This is the best video I’ve seen on folding the flag. The detail at 35 seconds about making the blue edge longer contributes greatly to the final triangle, making sure there is no red or white visible. The precision and snap to the movements are very commendable and worth emulating, together with the respect demonstrated in the whole procedure.
Totally blew my mind that the reason for the triangle fold was so it would fit in a tricorn hat box. I was today years old when learning that fact. Awesome!
Well done! I’m a retired Army Infantry Senior NCO and in the 80’s-90’s I was on numerous funeral details where we had to fold the flag for the family. The brand new flags the funeral homes use are stiff and tough to fold. If ANY amount of red is seen after the flag is folded, reject the flag and demand it to be re-folded properly. I see at the last tuck, the man folds the hoist end to easily tuck it into the folded flag, this is correct. The most important step in folding the flag is the very first fold, you must lower the red field about 2”-3” to ensure that no red will show towards the end. If you’ve never folded a lag before, get one of the same flags and practice. Out of around 50 funeral services I’ve only given the order to refill the flag once. We had a man lock his knees while holding the flag above the grave and he passed out and fell into the hole, we just left him there and didn’t bat an eye, he soon recovered and was fine. We take funeral details very seriously and we don’t goof around as us Infantrymen are famous for. The idiot that passed out was PFC Conner and we all believe someone else took his ASVAB test because he was dumb as they came. We warned him to not lock his knees and make sure he was well hydrated for the length of the service but it was a hot day and we’re all in our Class A uniforms so it wasn’t fun. We spend hours practicing to do these burial details and often it’s with rifle squads firing 3 volleys as well and we have to get the timing perfect so it sounds like one rifle firing for each volley, if it sounds like popcorn going off, they’re not well trained.
What a great, non-stodgy, and VERY educational, video of an important task! Easily one of the best videos on UA-cam! Happy 4th of July, and God bless you sir! Thank you for your service!
I love the honor of our veterans but the class they exhibit (exceptions noted as exceptions) is something to which every military in the world seeks to ascend. Well done gentlemen and Godspeed.
It can be a little tricky when you have a brand new flag I’ve noticed. Not sure why but sometimes they’re not always the same size. An important thing to remember is the eighth fold. If you see you’re short by the sixth fold you need to extend and if you’re too deep you need to crunch it back. An inch into the stars makes an easier tuck for the holder in my opinion but outstanding demonstration of an older flag
I'm gotten older and can't remember some things so. I know with this phone. I can find it. Thank you vetterns for all you had to deal with. Thank you. Uncle. Lamar for service. 1967
I am french canadian and I wish we had that kind of respect for our symbols. But I am in a weird spot: 1- My french-speaking parents wanted to separate Québec from the rest of the country. 2- Historically, even if you were not a hardcore separatist, you had almost nothing in common with the rest of Canada. (unless you had the chance to have an older cousin who introduced you to american rock'n'roll, grunge or heavy metal music, but then again nobody would ever translate the lyrics to you) 3- Nobody has respect for our troops here. In the USA, people say: "Thank you for your service!" In Canada... Meh! It's a living... I wish we had respect for abstract things like a flag.
Thank you for clearly showing every part of the process of folding an American flag. I've never been shown or taught how to do so and i watched another video before yours and he did not show the beginning of the 3rd fold. That's frustrating. God bless and have an awesome day!
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
Thank you for this video I have a American flag in my room and wanted to exchange it with a better made flag and wanted to make sure I folded the flag right
I'm Navajo and I was born in 91 . But as a kid going to school and learning about our American history. And the pledge of allegiance to the united states of America. These Magas are the TRUE MODERN DAY CONFEDERACY.
They made us do this in school each day ,we took turns putting the flag up in morning, and then taking it down before the end of each day. If anyone got caught dropping the flag we had to stay in and forfeit one recess... If this was still done in schools today maybe kids would grow up with an ounce of respect.
I e heard, somewhere in an Iran, a girls school, put an image of the 🇺🇸to be steped on, and the girls refused to step on it. They may know something, we dont
I think they may have done that to get into a tricorn hat box. The British were still terrorizing them and the had to hide the flag in one of those boxes. Under the hat🇺🇸 This is also a grest way to store grocery bags..into little triangles to reuse
I just bought a new flag to fly in front of my house because my old flag has been flown long and proud. It’s now torn and can no longer be flown. I found this video because I wanted to know how to fold and properly fold and respectfully dispose the old flag. Very proud of what the flag represents and am forever grateful for our brave men and women who fought for our country to keep it free. ❤️🇺🇸🤍🇺🇸💙
