ThriftyAV has reviewed quite a few video capture devices. Here is the link to the full playlist:

Nice video! Just curious, did you ever get a real USB 3.0 cable, and retest the quality of 1080p @ 60fps?

  • @Skallabjorn

Got one of these myself now. A note on the "usb 3.0" cable that comes with it. Have a closer look at it. I did. it is actually just a USB 2.0 with blue plastic. I purchased a quality USB 3.0 A to A cable from a reputable 3rd party and used it and my read outs flipped from showing USB 2.0 speeds to full USB 3.0 speeds. Cheers.

Thanks for replying with the cable issue.

I was just about to go searching for a solution/explanation for this, but you beat me to it! I was puzzled, since I doubted that they would be so foolish as to *blatantly* misrepresent a spec like this, but this makes perfect sense, just a cost-cutting thing to include only a USB 2.0 cable. Thanks!

so does this mean now you can capture videos at 1080p 60fps? not 30fps? Please help I just bought this and I'm going crazy over here

Great video 👍 There are so many similar capture devices like this one that it’s easy to buy something that you find doesn’t work for what you bought it for. With tests like this for specific devices you get a good idea of what someone else has found to be compatible or not before you buy one yourself. Having just bought a capture device that doesn’t record something that I bought it for, if I had seen a video where someone had already tested it for what I want to do and they found it didn’t work, I wouldn’t have bought it. That’s why videos like this one are very important. Cheers, Dave.

Thank you, @David Harry. If there any tests that I didn't run that may be helpful in your decision making process, let me know, and I will do my best to include it in a future video.

Sooooooooooo Cool, that's my capture Card! I haven't tried to set it up yet, but now I have hope.
I bought a VHS Upscaler and am going to try to stream my videos with a private setting onto UA-cam.
Orrrrrrr at least that is the plan. Not sure exactly how yet.
I thought it would be cool to have a long distance, Family Movie Night. No matter where you
are you can join the laughs. Wish I still had Blazing Saddles and Caddy Shack!
Thanks so much for this review. Loving it!

@@ThriftyAV This is going to be great.
First movie? Close encounters of the third kind!
Hey, the VCR Upscaler works great on the 2013 Smart TV all by itself. It really gives a boost of colour/color.
      Love from Canada!

Very good review, Thanks for posting this. I don t seem to have a USB 3.0 on my computer so I was wondering if i can still connect the cable to a 2.0 USB port. But I see that my question was already answered in the comments by another viewer saying that the USB cable is actually a 2.0. So thank you all. Great video.

If you are a streamer or record on UA-cam, I would avoid getting no-name capture devices and get at least the EVGA XR1 lite instead which is cheap at $50. I don't have the lite, but I do have the regular XR1 which is a good cheap capture device for 1080p 60fps capture.
I would like to give some warnings about these Amazon capture devices which are false advertising/claims. The first is the devices say 4K and claim to capture 60 fps but actually capture in 1080p at 30 fps (I don't know why. They also claim to be USB 3.0 but actually uses USB 2.0. Lastly, they're reported to use MJPEG which explains why the quality is worse. It may be hard to notice but you can tell if a USB-A cable is actually 3.0 is by looking at the male connector and checking for the 5 pins, a USB 3.0 connector has those pins while a USB 2.0 connector will not include them.
It's interesting that it can capture HDCP since name brand capture devices won't work with it. My EVGA XR1 oddly works with HDCP but HDCP video shows up as a black screen on OBS although it shows up on the HDMI passthrough. It does work fine for capturing my Xbox Series X.

Thank you for the video, very informative. 2 questions for you… what software would you recommend to record with on a Mac? Also, have you tried using a cell phone instead of dslr? Would that work?

  • @douglash.8640

What capture card/device would you recommend as best overall of those you have reviewed (has to be an external device connected by USB or HDMI as my computer will not take an internal card). I would like the price range under $50 or as close as possible. I would also like stereo versus mono. Like you, I would like to avoid the HDCP error. I am trying to record live streaming video/audio from my local college channel (through a Roku) to my PC. All recording would be direct to a PC using any recommended software or the OBS software. Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks so much for making these videos. These devices are called "capture cards", but it seems like they are adapters to stream the video to my computer and I need to use video software on my computer to record it. Is that right? It's a capture card, not a recorder card? Thanks again!

So if I have a 1440p monitor for gaming and want use my 2nd pc for streaming while using OBS on my 2nd PC will my Gaming monitor keep it’s native resolution at 1440p instead of changing it to 1080p for streaming/ recording.

It's not 1080p 60fps, well technically it is... It is capturing 30fps then converts it to 60 by duplicating frames.

i have a question, my current capture card cost $10 and the quality is so bad, sometime the video just becomes pixelated. does the video quality vary with the capture card? or are they all the same? just saw this Mirabox capture card and i trust vour review. hope my question gets answered

Thanks for the video. Will this work with my cable box? If so, will I need a splitter for it to work with the HDMI? I need a splitter for the Hauppauge 1512 HD-PVR 2 that I use, but lately I've been getting an error, so I'm looking for something to replace it. Thank you in advance

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  3 роки тому +1

Usually, if you need a splitter, it means that your capture device respects HDCP copy protection. I have not tested the Mirabox with a cable box, but I have tested it with a Blu-ray player and a Roku, both HDCP compliant devices, and it works with both of those.

Don’t get the miraBox, it’s not worth it. I Just got one and it wasn’t recognized in my win10 pc. Rig was just built last yr, my specs aren’t the issue. Usually you can get the drivers online right? No, makers of miraBox, get this, don’t even have a website. Its 2022… I have a website. This is a Chinese knockoff and if even one issue occurs, and it will. There is no support. That’s says a lot about a company that they can’t host $200-400 a year price tag to run a site. Just get the Elgato. Even if you have to go in on one of there lower end or older products.

Thanks for the latest video and sorry your having to do it in this sweltering heat-wave. Pricepoint on this capture device via Amazon isn't that bad and to record without the HDCP is always good.

I've decided my comfort level is more important than the viewer's S/N ratio! As far as this device, like you said, the 1080p30 performance isn't bad. And bonus that HDCP isn't a problem. I just wish the USB 3 and 1080p60 worked for me. Also, I prefer stereo audio.
