I have been watching your videos and sharing with my daughter. This will be her second year throwing discuss and shot. She is excited about eclipsing the 100' mark in the next couple of weeks. Right now her PR is 95'3" after throwing for just 3 months last year. Looking for a banner year this time! We will keep checking your website for upcoming camps and clinics!
I love your videos. they are so helpful. I'm 71 years old and throwing discus, shot and javelin in Senior games along with golf, pickle ball and other stuff. I played sports all my life and always loved track and field though I played football at Clemson in the day. I'm throwing a 75 % rim weight and only throwing 125-130 ft. I'm 6-1 250 and should be throwing 150 or more . Not sure what the problem is except speed and strength and technique. The internet is my only coach. My goal is to finish top three in nationals next May in all three disciplines. I need to be throwing 140 - 150 in both discus and javelin. I hold the state record in the javelin my best event. But have a lot of potential I am not realizing. I'm throwing 40 ft. in shot but need five more feet at least. I now have easy access to weight room so am excited about lifting for the first time in my life.. It is all doable. I'm devouring your video's so thanks a bunch. Can seniors go to throws camps?
Hello Don. Thanks for taking the time comment and provide all the info. Be sure to take a look at our Throwing chain reaction system. And yes. We have master that attend our camps. Be sure to visit our website for more info.
I’d be down for a disc. Currently throwing in the mid 140’s and really want to push my numbers to the next level. I go to a small school and we don’t have great discs, and one of these would be awesome. Great video!
Signed up, as a coach of Middle & High School throwers I am always looking for good info. We are a small school, with only a few athletes competing in the discus, this video is very helpful. Thanks, I am now looking to purchase a Nelco.
When I saw this link, I had a little nostalgia remembering the Saturn Pacer I had back in the early 90's after looking at a somewhat similar design in the video. I think Saturn was the first company to use the complete fiberglass (or whatever material) plates with no metal disk in the middle. The plates would literally invert 100% and you would have to step on it so it would re-invert pop back into place. It would eventually crack so bad at the screw hole that you could no longer use it. What a nightmare... I totally 100% assumed that the industry had certainly worked the bugs out after 30 years. I almost fell over when you started talking about plate damage. To quote the classic cliche: "We can put a man on the moon and we can't get the plate thingies worked out"? I am not poking fun at the quality of any of the brands, I just find this humorous 30 years later from my vantage point.
Hi Coach...I have signed up on the website and also shared the video on Facebook. I love my Nelco...best money I spent last year on my Nelco Olympia Superspin..got my PB with it. I hope I win a discus!!
Great instructional video. Keep up the great work. Im a father of three and am starting to get my two daughters and son into throwing. Would love a brand new disc to teach them with.
hello from a master class athlete from canada, learning discus and javelin for pentathalon. signed up for minicourse, using cheap practice implements for now...
I just signed up! I don't have my own discus, and I would really love to have my own! The ones I have been using belong to my school. Even over past summers when I went to camps I took the school's.
I threw a little BUT zero coaching, no weight room and just lime on dirt ring.managed only 145-150 foot.the Crouser dynasty was started then in Portland Oregon area.
Subscribed to your sight for my high school freshman son. Throwing in the 119 ft range without spinning before throw. Standing throw.. Just beginning . Trying to help all I can
I am not sure if Erik agrees, but for those of you who are saying you only have access to rubber discs I would find a way to get a metal one. My highschool had crappie ones so I just got my own via Christmas present requests from my parents. Even the generic cheapies would be better than using the rubber ones. I bought one a couple of years as a gift for $34 and It was decent. One issue was that quality tolerances was not great and there was a tiny gap between the plates and the rim and a little grass would get stuck there. I was going to fix this by getting a little tube of car bondo and run it around the seams using a putty knife, but he had to quit due to an injury so I never got around to it. I did use rubber ones in 8th and 9th grades, and they are certainly better than nothing at all. Later, the only thing I really kept a rubber one around for was to screw a strap onto it to use when I was doing dry throws. Now, when I got hit in the head in the 8th grade I certainly wish that disc had been rubber ;-)
High rim weight increases rotational inertia which minimizes nutation thus leading to a more stable flight. Of course, this is only possible if the thrower can put enough spin into the disc in the first place.
@@James-gq4tb yeah just got an 83% disc that I'm about to try out tomorrow. I might end up getting another one with a little lower rim weight and see what works out best (Because the 155-170 was hopeful thinking for this season because im really 150-160 on my best throws smh)
The best one is the best one you can afford. Buy what you can, keep an eye out for second hand, and train to maximize your ability to throw it effectively.
Just coming back to discus after 35 year break 😃 am now wealthy enough to buy real throw shoes but I have big wide size uk 12 feet. Where can I buy big man shoes as I’m about to go barefoot out of frastration. Please help. Surely all the big guys who throw don’t all have size 9 skinny feet. I would even consider having some made if I knew where. Thanks for your help 👍👍
You might want to check EBay. I could not find size 15s in any of the usual places but found some new Nike Zoom Rotationals size 15 on EBay from a seller in Lithuania. I’m getting back into it after 22 years away.
As a middle aged former youth discus thrower slowly getting interested again I love comparisons like this but I really feel the need to be a smartass about some of your explanations about the effects of rimweights and rpm (It's a characterflaw I really can't help myself). 1) higher rim weight will increase gyroscopic stability AND also make it harder to increase spin on the disc translating to less wobble on less than perfect releases as well as a more stable flight in choppy winds. 2) higher rim weight will NOT yield more rpm on the discus at launch but apart from the benefits mentioned previously the fact that we essentially "reverse" the spin on the discus from windup to release the stored energy in the discus with the higher rimweight essentially ends up "bracing" the discus slightly against our effort to "spin it" which "I imagine" allows for slightly more force to be directed into the throw itself.
if you can apply spin you’ll benefit from higher rim weight. if you can’t (as you indicated) you wont benefit. since we made this video (4years ago) we created an entire program “Flight School” dedicated to teaching how to hold, spin, and fly the discus. so yes. pretty good assessment from a former youth thrower💪
@@aretethrowsnation back in the day I had a decent pop at the end to put some spin on it but my footwork was garbage (mental image: "torso on stilts"). I took out my 2kg discus for the first time in 2 decades last weekend and to the surprise of absolutely no-one my footwork is still garbage but the "pop" at the end is long gone =). I'm counting the fact that all my throws were in the sector a big win.

Low spin.
Super spin

Just registered. Thanks for all the tips!
I may have missed it but what is the difference in the challenger disc
What type of disc do you recommend for a 103’ disc thrower?
probably 70-75% rim weight.
Our school has like 5 rubber discs that are completely chipped and like 20 throwers
thanks for the info, very informative.

Awesome advice, Thanks :)
What rim weight do you recommend I use if I'm a 155-170ft thrower?
OK SO use 70-high 80s in rim weight. Try them in that range and see what ones you throw farther with. It’s a preference
