Scarborough RT derailment highlights need for better TTC maintenance

- Ten years past its due date and four months before being decommissioned, the Scarborough RT is being used to highlight bigger problems with the transit agency's state of good repair. Mark McAllister has more.
TTC could learn from Vancouver's Skytrain on maintaining the system.
That what a ttc employee told me
my uncle (operating Engineers) who had every welding ticket known had to weld the large nuts on the tracks in Vancouver: they were cracking. Original install, bad torque, or just not paying attention.
I'm no expert, but the system wasn't ever designed to operate in heavy winterized or heavy rainfall climates (despite Toronto being the demo city, and Vancouver being the first operational city - only Detroit and Kuala Lumpur bought the technology from Ontario) I'm willing to bet the conditions of the Vancouver sea air had a part to play in the cracking nuts or track.
Glad I never take the RT anymore
Why didn't Doug Ford push his new subway into Scarborough rather than downtown? Is the Corktown station going to have more traffic than a station that replaces the LRT?
Cause it's more justifiable for a subway downtown. Scarborough's infrastructure sadly isn't good enough for investing in a subway line. There is an LRT line being proposed for Scarborough though... just pitching in my 2 cents.
This answer makes no sense. Why do you say that Scarborough's infrastructure isn't good enough? What infrastructure isn't good enough? And if it isn't good enough, then all the more reason to build infrastructure like a subway to bring Scarborough up to standard. The downtown has plenty of transit infrastructure. It is the people of Scarborough who need more transit, not downtown. People who live in Scarborough have a lot further to go to get downtown than people who already live downtown. Who wants to take an LRT which will take forever to get you downtown when you can take a subways instead?
@@ElliottDusterPOV: You’ve never visited Scarborough
@@thestorm6256 I literally live in Scarborough 🤣
@PixCel12 tines are changing geographically Scarborough sits at an strategic point in the city for property investment. Two GO lines, the englinton LRT ( if it ever opens) , development and increase in population will make it more attractive with its proximity to downtown compared to other regions, hence why he supported the extension to STC of line 2.
This is what happens when government can't make a decision.
More like widespread incompetency.
A. Crosstown Eglinton subway line should’ve been built 40 years ago, when we had the money and it was cheaper to build than today and when builders weren’t in the habit of stealing billions in funds and delaying the job a decade. After about the 80’s Toronto went into a free fall and a free-for-all; no one took civic pride in planning and infrastructure in this city.
Bingo.
State of Good Repair died when David Gunn left the TTC. It was, and always remains a management decision to continue State of Good Repair, fuelled by commissioners, who are all city councillors.
And as someone else pointed out earlier: the Russell Hill Crash wasn't primarily caused by faulty equipment (the trip arm), but by human error. This is why I stopped watching the news, and only found out about this today. The reporting on this derailment is pure garbage.
Now they can’t fund new trains for line two? Oh that just another accident waiting to happen
I took Line 3 for fun once recently... and boy was it the sketchiest thing I've ever ridden. The whole time the train is shuffling side to side, the train was barely full, and only 2 stations were relevant: Kennedy and Scarborough City Centre, it's time for a Line 2 extension to replace it
please in london weve got the dlr and central line which shake worse than line 3 and are louder and hey at least your trains didnt derail because the trains motor fell off the wheels whilst moving less than 10 years after the train was made
@@ahuman9143 Hey at least you have like 10 lines and can go literally everywhere in the city by train
Those linear induction motors really are flawed, they don't tolerate snow very well and they bring out the poor track condition with all the noise
Replacing subway with buses???World class city? Insanity at the highest level.
So what are they suppose to do ? Offer helicopter shuttles ?
I don't know. There is are people who get lucrative compensation to plan for future public transportation development.
I think the "Scarborough RT" ends the journey here.
gotcha!
2:01 bro that crash happened from humam error not equipment 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Media? Gaslighting? Say it ain't so.
Human error of the driver who passed 3 red lights before crashing into the parked train at another red light sorta near Dupont Station and mechanical malfunction of a signal light that the driver pass through and Triparm not working that didn’t trip the train’s breaks
the ttc's 'solution' to line 3 (line 2 extention) isnt going to be ready until 2030 at least and their 'temporary' solution is shuttle buses until then which seems like a really horrible thing to do, seen as the ttc knows that line 3 is bad, why didnt they do something about it 10 years ago? or extend the late running line 5 to scarborough over line 3 which a short closure is better than a 7+ year one
Rob Ford wanted a subway, so we're getting a subway. Hopefully the BRT gets funded, and red painted lanes + transit signal priority get added to Midland, Kennedy, and Ellesmere in the mean time.
This is an embarrassment for the city of Toronto and the province. It speaks volumes of Canadian infrastructure and how we have fall behind. WHERE IS the attorney general STOP CUTTING and maintain infrastructure. City hall and the Toronto electorate IS at fault for the failure of maintaining infrastructure all just to keep a few suburbanites happy
Canadian railway system is equivalent with third world countries. This RT fiasco,it is just the proof.
I have long believed that our region (GTHA) should have an amalgamated transit agency run by the province. Just like every other major metropolitan area I know of in Europe and Asia. The TTC is not a poorly run organization but it is chronically under funded by city council. I would support whole heartily the province amalgamating all the transit services together.
The province used to help fund municipal transit services but that ended after Mike Harris
Our transit is a joke, and there's no wonder why we are considered one of the worst transits
City has an unlimited amount of money. No credit limit. Just spend the money. Easy. Cheaper than all the liability lawsuits are happening. Increase fares 4.00 one way. 4.50 cash
They make a point about Line 2, but if you look at the numbers, the trains on line 3 were almost 40 years old, being built in 1985 and were constantly running exposed to the elements at much higher speeds. The trains on line 2 however, are only 27-25 years old (being built in the late 90s and early 2000s), and run primarily underground. They are also kept in much better condition than the trains on Line 3 were, since the yard on Line 3 could only really handle light maintenance and cleaning, which meant that they had to be trucked away for repairs, which wildly inflated the poor state of the line.
I don't really have any concerns about the safety of line 2, and I ride on it pretty frequently. Rather than replacing the old trains in my opinion all they need is a midlife overhaul.
They never should have built the Scarboro RT in the first place. If they had built a subway out to the Scarboro Town Center in the first place then none of this would be an issue and we would not have to be building the subway anyway many years later. If you are going to do something, do it right the first time. Going cheap sometimes ends up costing you more money.
Yeah blame Conservatives like Mike Harris and Rob Ford😂.
They can just upgrade the train cars??? Vancouver skytrain is the exact same thing.
Rob Ford wanted a subway
NO. Kennedy and Ellesmere station tunnel turn are too narrow.
New generation train Does not fit Turing radius. Platform Kennedy need 20 - 30 Cm Minimum Clearance order to Fit New Train. Rail are worn-out. Materials made was lower grade.
Main st Science world Turn is 2.5 Times Generous Turing ratio including WaterFront Station to Burrard Station 5 time generous Turning Ratio.
Vancouver Skytrain recently Re - done track Single Track for whole summer night time. 2021 and 2022. Expo line.
Oliva Chow better get to work..
RIP SRT
just dont hire the folks who did the light rail in Ottawa lol. hire someone with pedigree and pay good money
What a cool train crash I would I could have seen it happen.
What happened?
RT train derailed.
Doc Ock and Spider man had a showdown
The world's 5th worst transit system is TTC
Honestly, It's the number 1 worst system imo
@@eliotticard8604 Check out New York City's system, some parts are over 80 years old.
Try to take a bus in Chicago after 10 PM 😂
Bus way! Another failing idea and a waste of the money
I'm sorry and car infrastructure isn't a waste of money?
