The Blue Giant Anime Might Change Your Life (Review)

  • I randomly decided to watch this anime movie last week and it blew my mind with how engaging it was so I decided to review it, because I want to talk about it. Blue Giant is a simple, yet very compelling story about 3 dudes in a band trying to make a name for themselves as musicians in the Tokyo jazz scene. It has some easy to like characters, some stunning visuals and an amazing soundtrack. I rate it a 9/10 that everyone should watch, even the people that say they "don't watch anime." #anime #bluegiant #manga #animemovie

I stopped this video at about the 2:00 mark and just went to watch this because I heard good things about the manga but didn't know it was adapted as a movie. Not sure if my words will do this justice but I regret doing that, and I mean that in the best way possible. I didn't feel like getting attached to a story I've never heard of or tearing up today and I'm not looking forward to wondering if this will receive a sequel film or series (with a better budget or budget at all). Or researching everything about it. I'm a manga reader so I'm perfectly ok picking it up were the film left of or even restarting it but I must say absolutely feel like the music Hiromi composed matched the story, or at least the film in a perfect way (LOVE HER MUSIC) and I just learned she is married to one of my favorite designers after seeing this (you see...) I already have the soundtrack added to my Spotify. Everything you said about it rings true, this is a great video, thank you for recommending Blue Giant. I wish my algorithm always worked this well lol, just subbed and looking forward to your other stuff.

This might be one of my favorite comments ever. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video and the movie. I added the soundtrack on my Spotify as soon as I finished the movie and I am a big Hiromi fan now. When I was researching for this video I also looked into her husband as well and he is so sick. Thanks for watching!

@@TheLostCrsuader21anytime man, I loved it - would love to see a sequel or a 12ep remake from a studio like WIT after how good Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song was because that music really deserves better animation lol
Also I've seen your Why Black Characters Use Electricity video - no wonder you sounded familiar lol

I took the cgi scenes “standing out” as, at least partially, a creative choice, those cg scenes specifically happen every single time they play and get into the zone, then for like a close up it’ll be 2d again but the cg scenes are to throw that difference in your face. These people playing are into the music, apart of it, and since they’re apart of the music they are separate from everything else
Edit after coming back to this, every time they cg out it’s because they are “jazzing”

it probably wasn't a creative choice but it didn't affect the movie's quality. I like the positivity though

    • @MrHyperion555
      @MrHyperion555 5 місяців тому

      Not a creative choice ?
Like how do you do camera rotation, traveling and movement in general, while keeping the musician physically playing, without CGI
They wanted to add camera movements so they added CGI
      It was a choice

I always wanted to read the Blue Giant manga. I was told that the art is so great, you can or actually hear the music and emotions. Though still haven’t gotten my hands on it. Don’t know why. I guess looking at and observing a passionate guy trying to become better and make it big while I’m trying to do the same by preparing to move to another country would just be too much anxiety for me. Though, I will probably read it someday.
And I do recommend you download the minimum of three jazz tracks whenever you decide to pick it up. A casual one for regular moments, a somber one for sad scenes and one that you REALLY like, that’s intense and that just works for whenever there’s a big musical scene going on

    • @TheLostCrsuader21

If you live in the US, ask your local library to order some physical copies! Shipping may take while, but it’s free, and when your done it’ll give others the opportunity to experience the story. Though if you can’t wait, online scans are good enough. It’s just that the physical manga has some real page turner moments

Blue giant is the second music based manga I’ve read. The first being Soul Catcher(s) which is more big band/orchestra music and that’s where I learned the secret to enjoying music based manga. Listen to every song they mention when you can. Blue Giant also help by putting a lot of emotion into the art when they play so it’s easy to imagine what it sounds like.

My local Alamo Drafthouse theater showed this today and I went in with no prior knowledge and, with the exception of moments with obvious CGI and, I believe, rotoscoping, it was an excellent watch that will probably have me seeking out more Jazz music(I've always been a saxophone fan).

Fantastic video. Such an incredible movie. I had the opportunity to see hiromi perform live last year, and I felt like I was so back in that concert hall during the performance scenes in the movie. 2023 was such a good year for movies!!!
    my top #5 would be:
#1 The Boy And The Heron (Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki)
    #2 Perfect Days (Wim Wenders)
    #3 Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan)
    #4 Poor Things (Giorgos Lanthimos)
    #5 Blue Note (Yuzuru Tachikawa)
But there were so many more good movies: Napoleon, Flowers of the Killermoon, Past Lives, Air, Spider-Man Across the Universe, Godzilla Minus One, Sun & Concrete, The Teachers' Lounge, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, ...

This movie was really great. It reminded me of Slam Dunk with how it makes the beauty of the genre/sport in question really easy to get even if you're not too familiar with its deeper nuances.
Hope more people give it a try and don't dismiss it due to the CGI scenes.

    • @TheLostCrsuader21

I love the movie too and yeah sure. I feel like Dai doesn’t change throughout the film. I love how both Yukinori and Shunji overcome obstacles to become better artists, but Dai is virtually perfect from the beginning and stays that way. I don’t even think anyone gives him a piece of negative criticism about his music. I do know he starts out pretty terrible in the manga and trains with a teacher and by himself, but viewers should be able to watch the film as a self contained story. His arc is basically just breezed by in several montages. He doesn’t even have any character flaws that he has to work through. I appreciate how supportive he is as a friend, but as a protagonist, I would have liked to see him do more.
