For those “defending” the movie and the actors from the movie: it’s not a competition. The musical is not aiming to ‘outdo’ the movie. Nor the actors. One thing is the movie and another completely different thing will be the musical. It’s not a race, guys, calm down. Ewan is Christian in the movie and Aaron will be Christian for the play. And that’s about it.

Also remember that all these views are being based on a filmed promo. for a stage musical which is hardly fair to start with. When you see the musical in person, then by all means have your critic.

I don't know if you were ever able to hear him sing Roxanne, but what you expect it to sound like is a thousand times better than what you could imagine. Like, he did things with his voice I never thought he could do.

I don’t get why people say this lacks passion. I completely disagree. And to those that will be fortunate enough to see it onstage? Aaron performing live is the epitome of passion!
Heather Marie I have seen him live, I am aware that he is a good singer/actor, the part that some of us somehow found it lack of passion, was mostly, at least for me, due to the key and the arrangement of the song. Ewan McGregor did this song, in the movie, with all his heart, and you can tell by his voice specially when he was doing it with Satine(Nicole Kidman). Aaron did what most broadway actors can do, the voice is pretty, but honestly, did it hit you as much as when the end scene of Moulin Rouge when Ewan did that song? I doubt it
It seems to me like this is perhaps an intentionally polished performance, which may not be Aaron's fault, or really anyone's fault. Might be simply a choice in direction. Keep in mind we also don't have the context of the rest of the stage performance and the live atmosphere to really help set the tone.
Heather Marie literally was blown away by the stunning performance he and Karen Olivo and the entire cast did when I saw it in late November this past year. They’re incredibly talented and how they can get their voices to get such rich tones is honestly breathtaking
@@rogerview9866 It’s a song after Satine has died and he’s remembering and writing their story. Hard to be passionate about losing the love of your life while writing about it. The live performance will have far more passion than the movie

Alright. Don't get me wrong, Aaron has a beautiful voice and I'm sure he'll be a good Christian for the Broadway musical; but no one and I mean no one will ever replace Ewan in my heart.

Trying to understand the comments that this isn’t evoking the same emotions the song does mid movie. This is a teaser for a musical. It will be totally different live. But, Aaron’s voice is like silk for your ear drums. Gorgeous. Gah, why do I live in California?
Jodie Hughes it is simple. Cause we all know Aaron can do better than this. I have seen him live, I have seen plenty musicals and specially musicals that are adapted from a movie. I agree it is just a clip, but from the look of it, Aaron is missing the gut wrenching power which Ewan did in the movie , it was the moment he declared his love to Satine. It does need more emotions and power to deliver this song, which Aaron is totally capable of, but this arrangement is just off

ever since i fell for this man in les miz, ive always wanted to see him play christian in a stage adaptation of moulin rouge and now its actually happening and i feel like ive lived my life to the fullest and i’m ready to retire.
To everyone who is questioning the genuineness and emotion of this performance, trust me you will change your mind when seeing this performed live. I just saw Moulin Rouge in Boston this past weekend and Aaron Tveit in this role was absolutely incredible. Aaron and Karen Olivo perform this song towards the beginning of act 2 and then after what happens at the end, (I don't want to spoil too much), Aaron then closes out the show singing this song by himself at the end of the runway with a single spot on him with ensemble voices accompanying him. It is GORGEOUS and there was not a single dry eye in the audience. I highly recommend seeing this show at the Colonial Theatre before it leaves Boston later this month.
Aaron wins the Broadway best, Ewan wins the movie Best. Both are best for different reasons. I have watched Ewan sing this maybe 100 times and still get chilly bumps up in my guts when he hits the high notes. I hope the Broadway play is a smash.

I saw the show last week and there is no recording equipment on earth that does justice to his voice. Take how amazing you think he'll sound, times it by at least 100 and that might be slightly closer to how amazing he actually sounds

I've seen the show and honestly, it's absolutely incredible. Easily the best show I've ever seen. I love Aaron's voice, and his Roxanne and Crazy Rolling were even better. Due to the context of the show, I felt like those two songs were allowed to be much more passionate, and Aaron gives his all every time.

This movie holds a close place in my heart, always has and always will, and seeing a beloved movie come to life as a musical is amazing! Just listening to the soundtrack reduces me to tears because it is so powerful! I am hoping to save up money to be able to see it once everything opens up again, but for now, I have been listening to the album on repeat.
I kind of love all the people commenting saying how underwhelming his performance in this video is. Y'all really need to see it live and then tell me that Aaron Tveit is underwhelming in this role because he blew me away.

Aaron also is a very powerful Christian! Great voice, interpretation and presence. Just lacks that innocence of Ewan's eyes and expressions that were so unique and compelling!

After exhaustively reading all comments about this video, I can at least say "thank goodness we're all different". Being a fellow Aussie like Baz Lurhmann I totally understand the quirkiness he injects into his movies. Was a great fan of his 'Romeo & Juliet' but not as impressed - please don't hate me yet - with Moulin Rouge. It's just I'm not the really gushy romantic type. Many of you wanted Aaron to sing a carbon copy of Ewan McGregor's version but they are not the same actors/vocalists & Aaron has a far more experienced voice than Ewan could ever accomplish due to being a professional vocalist with extensive vocal training. That being said I agree it didn't have the emotional impact of the movie BUT we have not seen the musical yet & it will probably be a duet. This is a promotional video so don't jump the gun just yet let's wait & see first. I would still like to see Aaron play the role his own way, I don't like copies. As to those who were remarking on his hair I personally like the look & think it suits his role instead of the 'pretty boy' look he would want to escape & be out of place. Addressing the issue of orchestral arrangements it will be totally different to hearing it live than on a promo. video on UA-cam. Congratulations to all those who will be lucky enough to see this & hope you'll keep the rest of us updated.

This musical is incredible- saw it yesterday and was blown away. Forever thankful that I was able to see Aaron in this part before he leaves in a week.
This is gonna be hard to comment on. It will be like I Dream A Dream (Les Miserables) rendition of Anne Hathaway in the movie vs the legends of Broadway version. Ewan McGregor's version was really moving in the movie but I am also expecting the musical version will be different. I just hope that it will move the audience just the same.
Aaron Tveit made an excellent Enjolras and knocked that music out of the ballpark. He does the same thing for this song. 'Nuff said.
