I've only actually been to a handful of distilleries, but I can tell you that not only does being at a distillery change your perspective, I think it's essential to get the full experience. Even more so for a dram that you don't like that much. It's often a stark reminder that, despite marketing departments, whisky is made by people
I found the distillery visit pretty enjoyable too. I was early in my whisky journey at the time though, so I’d love to go back knowing what I know now.
That's a great call, Jeff. Jean and I went to one this last weekend. Their intro bottle was trash BUT after trying it out of the barrel in their rick house, it was quite impressive. Gotta love those barrel pours! Cheers to ya.
Really know what you mean regarding patisserie and can see the Glenmorangie 10 connection. Feel like it replaces that orange zesty parts from the Glenmorangie with more creamy chewy caramel and butter. I will crack open a sample of the Morangie 10 and do a compare tonight! Cheers.
I like the idea! I did plan on doing more filming however it was all just too exciting and as the kids say: "was living in the moment". Hope to do some videos like this in the future though! Cheers.
Hi Jeff, this is sold OVER 73 € here, so I'm shocked by the price you mentioned there !!! I tried it twice & liked it (I own 3 Penderyn so far, the old core range when the Port one was bottled at a weak 41 % abv) but I'll struggle to buy a recent one if not exceptional, price wise....I really hate that squarrish rebranding, really, cold as ice compared to the old one....Yeah a distillery visit can influence the review at a certain extent I think, but maybe not much more ? who knows... Anyway I'm looking forward to see this distillery's evolution in the following years...Cheers !
Wasn't expecting it to be that pricey to be honest! It seems quite reasonable in USA as well so strange it is so expensive in your market, granted some shops do sell this at £55. I think the cold as ice comparison is a compliment as it is the impression I got from them, modern slick and all that. Think some exciting things will be coming in the future! Cheers.
Yeah I have seen a lot of praise around Maderia finish or maturation lately, based on my experience with it though, I am yet to be convinced. Cheers Mitch!
Not familiar with the Rich Oak, but I do have the Madeira finished. I was not blown away by it, but of the international whiskies I do have it ranks up at the top. It's interesting enough to make me want to explore more from them.
I live near to the Penderyn Llandudno distillery which only makes peated spirit but they have a great shop which has their full range. I have a few of theirs, LEGEND, MADEIRA FINISH, HTFW EXCLUSIVE RUBY PORT SINGLE CASK STRENGTH, ICONS OF WALES RHIANNON, their tour there is great and they give you dram after dram after dram very generous. But like you said not the cheapest place to buy a bottle though.
That is awesome, I would love to visit the Llandudno one! I am a big fan of the Legend and think it punches a lot better than the low abv would suggest and I bet that Port Single cask is amazing! Is it as amazing as it sounds? Cheers Anthony!
Nice one Jeff! Yeah Penderyn makes some mid level good whisky in general but their single cask bottlings are absolutely delicious. I recently had a 9 year old first fill Tawny Port matured one and that was one hell of a tasty dram! I'll be visiting the distillery in December so any tips are welcome :) Cheers my friend 🥃
I have heard amazing things of the 9yo Tawny port! bet is the best in the range! The only tip is, let me know when you are going and I will meet you there buddy! Cheers
Thanks for yet another enjoyable review, Mr. Slapper. Been to several distilleries and only the first one or two -not being a huge whisky fan at that time- got me exited about the specific spirit... or maybe about whisky in general. as for me it kinda opens my eyes for all kinds of new expressions. Regarding the Penderyn ... been in the visitor center, but not a real fan of the whisky itself. Slàinte mhath
Cheers for watching Mr Peathead! As a wise whisky adventurer, what has been your favourite distillery? Circumstance and Ankle in Bristol maybe? It is also nice seeing you with that Jazzy light blue shirt emoji next to your name!
@@JeffWhisky Difficult question. I assume you mean the distillery and not the whisky that they produce. Several distilleries are great to visit, among them Springbank, Edradour, Glen Moray, Glen Scotia, Kilchoman, Arbeg, Bunnahabhain ... each in their own right
I've been to the one in Llandudno, all the whisky in the core releases is 4yo because they distil the spirit off the Faraday still at 92% so they don't need to chill filter (according to them). I would have thought that might limit the flavour somewhat, although the new make was still pretty pungent. However only maturing for 4 years I thought it was spirity and after a nice nose, the Madeira one's pallet, was fairly average blend like in quality at best.
I was so Desperado to find the code I actually found it 😂😉

"whisky is made by people" that is a great thing to remember when caught up in the reviewing world. Cheers to more Distillery visits buddy!

Distilleries really can turn your perceptions around! What distillery did you visit and lick the barrel from?
I gave the Rich Oak a try based on what you said about it before, and it was like a patisserie. Reminded me of Glenmorangie 10

We can get Penderyn here and all has been pretty good so far. Maderia seems popular at the moment!

We get Penderyn in Japan. I like what they are doing, and I like what you are doing. Kanpai!
That is great to hear it makes its way over to you! Can you remember which ones you have tried? Cheers for the kind words Mac! Kanpai!
I really like this Rich Oak expression, so much so I may have to get another (on offer, of course). Another great review - cheers Jeff 🥃
