Me to mate. love Duke. I'm close to regaining the actual experience, I've assembled two old pc's. A Pentium 166 and a Pentium II 350 with a Voodoo 2 card in it.
Me and my dad who grew up playing Duke are building a windows 95 pc to relive his memories and he sure is and I feel like I am cuz EVERYTHING IS GOING WRONG in the true retro pc kinda way. It’s a intel pentium 3 & 866 MHz and 256 megs of ram and the mother board has 4 megs of built it vram and built in sound blaster 16 support so YEAH. It’s amazing even today
00:01 - Dosbox OPL Emulation (SB16, auto) 01:03 - Soundblaster 16 ASP (Yamaha OPL3) 02:06 - Soundblaster AWE64 FM (3D off, Reverb and Chorus off) 03:10 - Soundblaster AWE64 (native GM, GS needs Windows 9x and GS.SBK, 3D off) 04:12 - MS Synth (based on Roland GS without effects) 05:15 - EMU 2MB GS (bundled with many Soundblaster cards, dry) 06:18 - EMU 4MB GS (bundled with many Soundblaster cards, dry) 07:20 - EMU 8MB GS drums (bundled with many Soundblaster cards, dry) 08:22 - EMU 28MB GM (bundled with some Soundblaster cards, dry) 09:25 - Roland SC-55 (Roland SC-88 in SC-55 mode) 10:27 - Roland SC-88 (probably the native version) 11:30 - Yamaha MU80 (TG300 mode, GS emulation, very similar to DB50XG) 12:32 - Gravis Ultrasound (MAX version, unfortunately distorted for some reason...:( 13:35 - Roland MT-32 (BONUS, not officially supported, GM patched MT-32old) 1995 - Lee Jackson
+Wolfycrash Well it's certainly the one I remember when I started playing Duke Nukem 3D again in 2003/2004 and from then on. Though 0:00 is the one I mind from the 90's. :)
Yes indeed. The MT32 sounds *super* realistic compared to the Sound Canvas. Although it is older than the SC line, and they both use MIDI, the MT32 uses some different technology. The only instrument that sounds more realistic on the Sound Canvas than the MT32 is the piano. Everything else sounds more realistic on the MT32.
Yamaha MU80 11:30 wow, incredible that some people were enjoying Duke Nukem on this level while most of us were on 01:03 Soundblaster 16s (if we were lucky)
Hi, the original Yamaha MU80 tone generator was used in this video. Connected to modern PC via usb to midi cable and played trough dosbox. There are several software solutions like XG-lite but I think Yamaha stopped the support during Windows XP era. If you have some older machine you can grab the waveblaster connector compatible addon for soundcards - e.g. the NEC XG385 (which is compatible with DB50XG) on ebay.
I don't have the expansion for my AWE64 so I used the X-Fi Ti and the official Creative soundfonts. Those soundfonts shoud work with many Soundblaster cards.
When I played games on PC first time, I even did not know that it supports sound (maybe except internal PC speaker) because PCs I had access did not sound cards. After then when parents bought me my first private PC... I get it but it was with SB pro compatible card... Now in 2021 I decided build retro PC and yes I bought awe 64 and it sounds like I visit concert hall. It is beautiful
+Tamás Versitz Because the AWE64 works in the same principle as a SNES' SPC700- you provide it with samples and it manipulate the samples' pitch to produce music. The Gravis Ultrasound is supposed to work the same way, but for some reason it's glitching in this video.
Nope! Not even close! MT32 predates General MIDI, this game doesn’t support it, and so a GM patch is needed. This is *exactly* how it would sound if officially supported. I love it, it’s my favorite version of this excellent song.
I played this on an AWE 64, but I remember it frequently alternating between a more subdued music emulation, and the more 'badass' sound from 3:10 (except this excerp sounds like it's not firing on all cylinders). The 'normal' AWE sound isn't in this list. Anyone knows why Soundblasters did that? All I can think of is the discrepancy between the setup menu allowing only the selection of Soundblaster AWE 32, despite having a 64.
The Soundblaster AWE64 native GM is the one I love the most. Mainly due to my preferences of reverb. Granted I don't remember mine losing voices like that....
well I don't think emulator existed back then or did it? 00:01. 01:03 alright the Soundblaster still actually works. 02:06 there goes that soundblaster awe32/64 fm holy cow. 3:10 and there goes SoundBlaster awe32/64.
@@sfurta its alright oh by the way if you see that's lit up blue you can try to find any sound cards in exact way as I remembered I hope you remembered too. but very good comparison by the way.
Problems with certain samples I noticed in the video: AWE64: The guitars keep randomly cutting out and making choppy sound. Gravis Ultrasound: A certain synth instrument is replaced with another guitar.
Yamaha's S-YXG50 and S-YXG100 (no longer sold) can produce the same result as the MU80 and a lot of other Yamaha hardware. The final version of S-YXG50 was released for Windows XP so I don't know about getting it to work on any newer version of Windows except Windows 7 using it's XP virtual machine.
cinosxued Unfortunately, Yamaha discontinued it. :/ The only way to get it now is from warez links. Just search S-YXG50 invision in Google. I got the one from ulozto . net. Be careful, some warez links might contain malware. The file I got from ulozto is safe according to avast.
The reason is its Identical Patch set. MT-32 Standard is made very much prior to the General MIDI Mappings, and it had much more instruments in a totally different order. And of course it is driving me nuts while matching the GM Instruments with MT-32. I gave up😇
You could try to listen to the Macintosh version - they did not include a .MID, but instead an .AIFF - AIFF is like an MP3 and sounds the same across all machines, so it should sound a lot different to any of those.
The lead guitars on the MT-32 sound like NESes lol. Also, is it just me or does the 2MB EMU sound better than the other EMUs simply because it actually has a decent distorted guitar patch whereas the 4MB and upward sound like they just sampled the mediocre SC-55 dist guitar in crap quality and distorted it some more?
odd, for me, it sounds like the music is playing twice, the second instance on a slight delay, causing the audio to sound absolutely horrible... >.< my ears... ow... EDIT: nevermind, my browser just glitched on me, considering the audio still played AFTER I paused the video itself. A quick refresh fixed it.
How did I miss this after all of these years??? ;)
oh my gosh, the man himself. nice job on both this game and rott.
Hey there Lee, love the music your did for Duke3D.
Thank you for the gift of this soundtrack!
Surprised this only had 10 Likes. Hi Lee, love this song, gets stuck in my head constantly.
Thank you for this masterpiece 😊

Ah yes, that sweet SB16 (how I remember Duke 3D when I first played).
The first time I played duke nukem it was with a 66MHz 486DX2 cpu, 16mb of ram, and a soundblaster pro 2.

duke nukem was made by 3d realms not ID software also its nukem
Actually, the one most people remember is the Sound Blaster 16 one. At least us who played this when it first came out.
3:55 Bells? Unexpected. "|You know the soundtrack's getting serious when they start adding things like bells.

F_A_B123 I only use Sounblaster to play this
F_A_B123 Sound Blaster 16 for life
F_A_B123 16, 32, AWE64, or AWE32

Thank you so much for posting this! It was so hard to find the version with the true authentic sound! Great job, man!
The Dosbox OPL emulation is how I remember it, even though I had an ISA Soundblaster, one of they foot long things.
One of the most epic opening tracks out there.
Indeed.
Sounds like an anime intro to me as well, and a better one, no cap
This music takes me back to very happy times.
Just so you all know, the track was originally written for the SC-88 which is why it sounds so natural there

My Duke Nukem 3D plays the SC-55 version. Pretty sick in my opinion. Any one agree?
I like the echo of the drums and guitars.
Gene Gustice I still like the Soundblaster 16 better
and the sc-88 is cool too
wow, the transition from 02:06 to 03:10 makes a massive difference in spite of both being AWE64
