Oh this movie was terrible and yes, even back then. Even as fans we were embarrassed by how lousy this one was. All the big franchise horror movies that year were bad; this one, Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (tried to watch again recently and could not get through it.) Halloween 5 was extremely bad; I mean there’s a shot in that where a guy is shining his car and you can blatantly see a movie lamp in the reflection on the car.) Anyway, the lousy entries of horror in 1989 led to the horror slump that with a few exceptions really lasted until the original Scream came out in 1996. Scream really brought horror back.

@@house1203 - I think it was because of the role of the politicians in getting rid of the crime that has infected New York City, such as drugs, prostitution and too much homelessness as well. Then the new wave of businesses took over and replaced the old ones that were considered "sleazy." That all happened in the 1990's and it continues perhaps even today. For anyone who preferred the old, sleazy days of NYC, have NO understanding the devastating effects of the old period on the lives of the people who felt unsafe.

I never got that opening monologue thing in the movie…. was it supposed to be a radio DJ doing a lead-in for the song? What was written for him is such contrived horse shit… why was he being directed to do an almost Johnny Cash speaking voice? None of it makes any sense or works well.
Why not just leave that shit out and have the song by itself?
It’s not a very good Friday the 13th sequel much less a good movie in general, but this song is great. A perfect send off to the 80’s… it sounds like it could’ve been from anywhere from ‘85-89 and you’d never hear anything quite so 80’s in a movie ever again.

    • @JaybayJay

@@RunLikeAVillain Read the irony. They're trapped by a city that they love to hate. That scares them but it makes them feel alive at the same time. There is no escape, except there is. They just don't want to. You can't get the adrenaline pumping without the terror. Basically saying, "We wouldn't live anywhere else, or have it any other way.."
Yes. This was the first Jason to leave Crystal Lake so they wanted to reminde people of a simple fact. NY in the 80's was worse than Crystal Lake, and that was for real. There were more murders in NY in one day than in all of a FF13th Movie. And what says NY. Radio dj's.. And there was nothing more 80's than the trailers and the guy doing that voice..
Remember the trailer? They had Jason standing on the docks staring up at NY playing the NY NY Music.. Saxaphone playing great Jazz.

I saw an interview with director Rob Hedden and he said that since he was on a limited budget the amount of scenes actually shot in New York City had to be drastically reduced. The scenes in the alley and on the street were shot in Vancouver, I think only the part where Jason chases the main characters through Times Square was actually shot in NYC.

In my eyes, even Julius got his head chopped off by Jason, Julius is still my hero because he was stranded on the top of the building with Jason chasing him, he had to conquered his fears and have no choice but to boxed Jason in order to stay alive, so he kept boxing Jason continued to pound him in the face and was giving everything he got to try to knock out Jason until he run out of energy than Jason took control of him and killed Julius. Julius is one of my inspiration and should be an inspiration to others that when things get tough, never give up and try your best of all your abilities to defeat your biggest fear, even if you can't take it anymore.

Having grown up with the series I've seen the franchise evolve with the times, reflecting then modern culture and music. This song was used in the opening and it and the DJ's line, "A city of bright lights casts many dark shadows," perfectly sums up the pessimism and cynicism of late-Eighties America. It's a bittersweet time for me and others who lived through it.

It's like this, we live in claustrophobia, a land of steel and concrete trapped by the dark waters, there is no escape, nor do we want it. We've come to thrive on it and each other. You cant get the adrenaline pumping without the terror, good people. I love this town.
