I'll give it a go again but dye the tongue next time as that caused the main issues.

    Hi this is the first time I had seen your video. Where do you get soda ash and the other preparation stuff? They look really good. What do you sell them for?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому

      Welcome to my channel, I am glad you found it... as for the Soda ash... it is what activates the Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, another name for it is Sodium Carbonate. You can find it at one of the dye houses, or you can purchase locally from a pool supply store, or in the laundry isle under the name Washing Soda, just be sure to check the label says 100% Soda Ash.
      Here is how I mix or make soda ash: ua-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/v-deo.html
      and I do a prewash in a textile soap called Syntrapol which has been replaced by these two soaps at Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=synthrapol
      OR.... here are some other pH neutral soaps that some dyers use and can be found locally : Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner (I found this at Home Depot)
      I have not sold any shoes for a while, but I was selling them for around $100.00 ... basically I was charging $50.00 to dye them and then whatever the blanks cost... I was buy-in them from www.shoes.com ... they had discount codes all the time, plus you can sign up for their saving club and build points good toward more shoes
      the other place I found good deals on Cons and Vans was www.famousfootwear.com ... they had a club to join and gave discount now and then... some were just buy one pair , get another 50% off .... but when I was dyeing a lot of shoes, I would use the code to stock up
      anyways, I hope this helps you, but just in case, here is my Beginner's Playlist that has lots of tips and tricks to tie-dye :ua-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html

    1st time viewer. Those are beautiful! My son got ink stains on a brand new pink hoodie, I'm hoping to tie dye with black to blend it in. Fingers 🤞

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 роки тому +1

      That is a great way to save a tee or a hoodie that has a stain on it... one thing to consider... with Procion Dyes I use, they work on natural fibers and not at all on Poly ... so if the hoodie is mostly cotton then you should be fine.... if it is a 50/50 blend, then the hoodie may have a bit of a faded look to it, but I think it will still camouflage the ink stains 😉 ........ have fun and I wish you success!!....
      OH, and hoodie being thicker fabric do take some more work to get them tied up and dyed ... here is my hoodie playlist to give you some insight : ua-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuqU-VjaVYYOBOjvEFZgxFfj.html

    Getting ready to tie-dye a pair of my older pink converse that I've had for a couple years and have been a good pair of shoes for me. It's time for them to have a face lift and what better way to do that than to add some dye. Looks like I will have to go to the laundry mat since I have a new front loader and it doesn't allow me to just do a spin cycle without rinsing or washing them.

      I buy my synthrapol from dharma, the same place I buy my dyes from .... www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/synthrapol-detergent.html ........... and the soda ash can be purchased from there as well, but it can also be purchased from pool supply stores as it is the same chemical they use to adjust the pH .... ask for soda ash or Sodium Carbonate .... another place you can find soda ash is in the laundry isle at the store, it is called Washing Soda ... just check the label and it should say 100% soda ash or sodium carbonate .... and one more name I have heard it called by is pH Up ....
      have fun and be aware the dye spread quickly on the shoes, so I add the dye slowly and I put colors that will blend nicely next to each other, like orange for example, I make sure to surround it with yellow, red or fuchsia

      if you are going with one of those instead of Procion dye, I would choose the Tulip dyes, but make sure to have the shoes prepped and ready before you mix your dyes as they become active as soon as you add the water and will give the best colors right after they are mixed and must be used the same day... so have some other stuff ready to dye also

    So just curious how do you know what colors mix and which ones don’t?! My shoes turned out muddled. Also where do you find those tips you use on your bottles to make it so precise? And how do you know the ratio of dye powder to water? It’s all so confusing but looks so much fun! Sorry I know I asked a bunch of questions😅

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому +2

      Okay... for the first question... a color wheel will help with that... if the colors are close on the wheel, then they will , mix well, but opposites do not.... for example ... Orange/Yellow mixed with Purple will make brown ... orange/green will make brown .... so I tend to lay orange down and surround it with yellow, fuchsia or red

    I love, love your videos so does my 8 yr old granddaughter. We have made a few tshirts from your tutorial for her. I tie dyed some shoes but the colors are coming out dull, I'm using procion from dharma trading. I mixed the colors on room temperature water and soak them in soda ash for 25 mins prior to dying.
    Please can you help me I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Thank you in advance.
    Thank you for your videos.

      thank you and you are welcome.
      For shoes, the first thing, are they cotton shoes?? polyester does not take these kind of dyes?? I worked mostly with Converse, Vans, or Keds as I knew they were cotton.
      Then I did a prewash on them to make sure there is nothing the manufacturer sprayed on them as this could interfere with the dyes.
      Then after I soak in soda ash, I spin out the excess in the washer, too much soda ash in the shoes means extra liquid which can dilute the dyes, or it can cause them to run even more.
      Next, after I have applied the dye, I let them it for a few minutes and then I will go back and touch up any spots that look faded by adding a little extra dye... with converse being made from canvas, the dye can soak into the thicker fabric and the outer surface can then look faded
      Then I batch mine in tub with a lid so they stay damp while batching, if they dry out, then the dye bonding stops... also, I will toss a couple wet rags in the bin just to help keep the humidity up.
      and I batch mine for 24-48 hours before I do the rinsing and washing. I hope one of these tips help you... I wish you success on your next pair

    When I dye my shoes I pull out the soles before the SA soak, if the shoes let me...some are glued down better than others. I find that the shoes are easier to dye with them out, the washing is easier and they dry far faster. I also got tired of the soles getting ruined by the soaking, I think the SA is hard on the glue. When the dyeing process is all done, I simply glue them back in place.

    • @MrTieDye

    Hey Mr. Tie Dye!! I have more questions. I was getting ready to dye my shoes. Thought I had everything, and started reading about dye thickener. It makes sense doing shoes why you would want a thickener since you are dealing with a smaller area to dye. My question is this: What is in the thickener? Is it just the aginate or is it a combination of urea and the aginate?? Then, I am doing 2 pairs of shoes so is a small bag of aginate enough? So confused and ready to get tie dying!! Your answer will be much appreciated!! Thank you!!

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 роки тому

      most of the shoes I dyed, I did with just regular dyes, no thickener, but the dye spreads fast so I lay colors down that mix well... so like my orange, I make sure to surround it with yellow or fuchsia
      only when i wanted to 'dye paint' a detailed design did I use thickener ..... and for that I used sodium alginate, urea and salt in my mix ..... I do not seem to be able to post a link here for some reason, but I do have two videos on how to make thick water/dye .... so just search my channel for thick black dye .... and it is the older video .... with the shoes, you will need the urea if you are going to paint them with dye

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 роки тому +3

      I use synthrapol soap for my prewash .... www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/synthrapol-detergent.html .... some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap instead as it to is pH neutral soap.
      so the pre wash helps to remove any type of anti stain treatments on the shoes which may inhibit the dyes ... so even if you just soak them in warm water for a 20 minutes may help, but a prewash is better... then I rinse the good and then soak in soda ash then i sin out the excess in the washer, or let them sit for a while, I like them to be barely damp when I add the dyes... and I use the fine tip bottles so I can add the dye slowly.... and they have to be cotton shoes... I know Cons, Keds and Vans are good cotton shoes .... after the first coat of dye has soaked in, I do touch u some of the colors that look lighter with just a bit more dye... then i batch them for 48 hours, but they need to stay wet during this time, if they dry out the dye bonding stops ... ua-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/v-deo.html .... and they will always be lighter after they are washed and dry, so I stopped taking pics of wet shoes because they do look darker when wet

    • @MrTieDye

      I use Procion Dyes and they require soda ash to activate and bond with the cotton fibers... Soda Ash is also known as Sodium Carbonate ... it can be purchased where you buy your procion dyes (see links below)
      OR, you can buy locally... I get mine for a pool supply store, I buy a 50lb bag for $35.00 ....
      you can buy it in the stores... Laundry isle it is called 'Washing Soda' just check the label to make sure it says 100% Soda Ash or Sodium Carbonate ... and there is a product called pH Up for pools that is also soda ash ....
      and lastly, if you cannot find it, you can make it by heating Baking Soda also known as Sodium Bicarbonate ... I demo it in this video where I compare store bought soda ash, some bought from dharma where I get my dyes and some that I made : ua-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/v-deo.html

    Can you explain the orange turning brown when dyed with other colors bear it? I don't quite understand.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  Рік тому

      yeah it is the liquid dyes mixing or blending together when applied next to each other ... if you just add just a little bit of Purple, or Green to Orange, you get Brown ...
      So when dyeing shoes, I try to surround the Orange with colors that it blends better with like Yellow or Fuchsia
      Here is a video where I use purple and orange to tie-dye a tee, but tin this case I can control the blending some by applying the darker color first and letting it spread out some, then adding the orange to it ... a little bit of orange in the purple is not enough to show much change : ua-cam.com/video/TAo9BgtpZ2Q/v-deo.html
      One more side note on the mixing of colors, here is a video where I dye Spiral s in various ways, on the first one, I use just Primary Colors and mix them on the tee shirt to create a full rainbow spiral, it is the first tee I dye in this video : ua-cam.com/video/2UJkPKHvruk/v-deo.html

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 роки тому +1

      I think that comes down to personal choice, I will set mine outside where they may get a little bit of sun to speed the drying, but I also know that direct sun exposure for long periods of time can fade the fabric some.... so I prefer partial sun or shade when I dry my shoes ....
      really it is personal choice ..... this art was so secretive for so many years that many people just developed their own processes which is why you can get so many answers when asking what seems to be a simple question ... so I show how I do it and recommend people find what works best for them, be it my way, someone else's way, or a way you come up with yourself, or you blend a couple peoples ways.... I hope this helped more than confused you ✌🏻💚🙏
      and for me, I think putting in the dryer is too noisy, and I am not sure how the shoes would hold up to that.... I not saying you cannot do it that way, just that I have not so I cannot speak to it

    What adhesive spray do you use for the soles? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

      the only times I use adhesive for the shoes is when something comes apart ... sometimes the sole insert will come loose during the wash out cycle and I will use 'Shoe-Goo' (it is a name brand glue found in the shoe section of a store, comes in a red tube) to glue sole back int the shoe after everything has been washed and is completely dry... I use rubber gloves to apply some of the 'Shoe-Goo' to the inside bottom of the shoe, then carefully insert the sole back in and then I apply pressure to make sure it sticks good, then I let it dry completely for a day
      other times just the fabric from the sole will come off and this is a bit more of a pain to put it back on with the sole still in the shoe, so I will check to see if the sole is a bit loose and if so, then I will remove it from the shoe, this makes putting the fabric back onto the sole a bit easier... I found some spray adhesive at the hardware store, this one is called 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Adhesive ... I will lat the soles and the fabric part onto some cardboard and then I spray the sole and the back side of the fabric with the adhesive, I let it set for a couple minutes according to the instructions on the can and then I match them up and press them down good so the stick... I let it set for a few hours to dry, then I re-glue the sole back in as described above
      it is a pain when the shoes come apart, but this is how I fix them ...
      I hope this has answered your question , but just in case I misunderstood the question and you were just asking about the dyeing process and if I use something to cover the soles while I dye them... I do not apply anything to the soles while I am dyeing them I am just careful to wipe up any drips or dye as they happen, if the dye it left on the soles for too long, it will stain them ✌️

      Thank you so much. That is exactly what I was asking, and the answer I needed! I have a hard time with the glue for my soles, and the inserts coming loose recently. Years ago that never happened, now it feels like every pair I buy it's an issue. @MrTieDye

    Do you have to have SODA ASH and what was the product you soaked the shoes in on the first step?

      I did a prewash with Synthrapol Soap, it is a textile detergent from Dharma that is pH neutral .... and then the soda sh is what activate the Procion Dyes, so if you use these dyes, you will need soda ash ..... here is my Beginner's Playlist to give an overview of tie-dyeing with Procion dyes : ua-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html

    What is center fall? That stuff you are soaking the shoes in where do you find that at?

      I apologize, I should have written it out in the video... it is a textile soap called Synthrapol ... is is pH neutral and helps keep any loose dye particles suspended in the water .... but, since this video they have discontinued Syntrhapol and then Dharma made their own version of it, plus it looks like another company made a replacement... so you can choose which you prefer : www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=synthrapol
      OR.... here are some other pH neutral soaps that some dyers use and can be found locally : Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner (I found this at Home Depot)
