When Simon died, the narrator describes the ocean waves, the seaweed, and the moonlight in incredible detail as it carries his body out to sea, symbolizing the angels carrying Jesus to Heaven. With Piggy's death, the narration seems to symbolize that the ocean just sorta swallowed him. Piggy never got any love.
this guy is so underrated. he not only used sound effects to convey understanding in the story but also different voices for the characters. spot on with the music. this guy has helped us all in countless way. thanks so much dude.
This is like the first book I've ever been assigned in school that I have actually cared about, piggy deserved better, I even feel terrible calling him that. He was so dehumanized we never even learned his real name. The sweetest characters always have it the worst.
At 20:10, regarding Roger looking down at Ralph and Piggy: "Below him Ralph was a shock of hair and Piggy was a bag of fat." Shows how inhuman and emotionless Roger was, completely devoid of empathy towards others. He didn't recognize Ralph and Piggy as living, breathing people; he saw them as just things, namely their most prominent feature: Ralph = hair and Piggy = fat. When you dehumanize others and do not acknowledge their personhood, it's easy to hurt or even kill them.
Piggy was one of the people involved in Simons's killing and tried to deny it and tried to push the blame on the others. He also called Simon “batty” which means crazy and said he had it coming🫣.
I know like seven people have said this already, but I'm dreading trying to do chapter twelve justice after my students got so used to your reading. Its a shame you weren't done in time because they've really enjoyed it. Anyway, thank you for this treasure!
Alicia Sakers Wow, I REALLY appreciate those kind words. My original schedule had me slated to get all chapters done and posted before the fall semester started but some unexpected technical difficulties prevented me from doing so. Then, I just got too busy teaching myself. But chapter 12 is engaging all on its own! You got this! And thank you once again.
I'm about to finish the book and this chapter it's just amazing, especially with the background music at such a moment of tension btw Jack and Ralph, and later Piggy's :'( ...however it built such an EPIC scene in my mind. Thank u so much for this!
Hi, your probably never going to see this but I just wanted to say thank you. Unlike others, I always loved this book, and your re-reading of this story puts it in a new perspective for me. From the music, to the sound effects, to the dialogue, it all blew me away. Thank you man, for this amazing audiobook.
These words really mean a lot to me, thank you. This is my all-time favorite novel. But that wasn't always the case. I hated it in high school because my teacher just didn't make it interesting. I read it in college with an amazing professor and ended up loving it - I made the audiobook mostly to help high school kids see why the book itself is so amazing. I'm glad that you were able to have such a positive experience with it!
I think that the other than besides piggy being fat, the author gave him that name to symbolize that he was like a mother pig watching over her children. Or in this case his peers. Also this relates to the mother pig incident in chapter 7 I believe. The mother pig died while protecting her children from spears thrown by Jack, and Piggy died trying to protect his friend's honor.
Just discovered this recording today. It's SO GOOD. The production value is top-notch, and all of the sound effects, musical choices, accents, and even the cadence of the delivery are just brilliant. My eighth-grade classes loved it...and they don't love anything but lunch and their phones. ;-) Thanks for a GREAT reading! You've got another fan.
So likeee I'm a ninth grader and my english teacher uses this audiobook recording for when we read the chapters in class. I think this recording is the main reason I enjoyed it. Whenever we had to do independent reading for a chapter I would always end up being confused (mind you, im a bookworm of sorts), but when I heard you reading all the words with each character's distinct voice and the sound effects and musical choices, I understood so much easier. You do this wonderful book so much justice and I thank you for making my first experience with this book a positive one. Definitely one of my favs now
thank you so much, i have a really hard time reading because of my adhd and audiobooks are the easiest way for me to consume books. between the outstanding production quality and the captivating story, it really does feel like im rediscovering my absolute love for books and reading in a way that is more suitable to my attention. thank you (:
Hello! Thank you so much for this read-aloud, it helps so much beyond belief. This book is hard to follow and can be a pain to understand, so with these videos I have been able to get better grades, and I appreciate the book quite a bit more.
What I like about the audio when the person is reading is the background noise to give an explanation of what is going on in the chapter when he is reading it is such an amazing detail that explains what happens
jedmond you are the goat for this im supposed to read this in english honors but i didnt start it until like two days ago despite having all winter break to read and im almost done with it now
Few people are commenting on this but it's worth mentioning, this man used stereo to add 3 dimensions to an audio book scene! While it's not the most effective for me since I'm using a phone in an asymmetrical environment, I can certainly respect the effort. Stereo! In an audio book! So we can understand it more!
It always makes my day when someone appreciates this aspect. It definitely required more work but I wanted to make it have as much atmosphere as possible. Thank you for acknowledging this!
An interesting detail that probably wasnt intentional is when the death of Piggy is described. Throughout the story Piggy is the "rational" and "logical" person that serves as the voice of reason that looks at things with a scientific output. Ironically enough, when his body twitches like a pig it is actually rigormortis. The SCIENTIFIC term for twitches like that after death. Simons death seems like a fever dreamish event as all the boys are in a frenzy during the dance while Piggy has a much more descriptive and logcial death, similar to his scientific outlook on things. TLDR; Scientific/Smart Character goes through a scientific death process and is discarded of.

yea, it's a common criticism of this book that Golding overwrite WAY too much. Your probably done with the book by now with your 3 week old comment, but if you go back, there are far too many pages just wasted on describing "the island is foresty and has a mountain"

Roger will get his karma and it will be more painful than piggys, rip piggy
i disagree. i think piggy was sensible but i dont necessarily think he was kind. simon was kind. piggy was nice at most
Nobody gonna talk about Ralph taking a spear to the chest?
Didnt he catch Jack's arm with his own spear and push it away before he could get hit?
It might have only grazed him
They used the back of the spear. They didnt use the spear head in the battle. Atleast at that part
I imagine that wound killing Ralph later on, because of it being left untreated and later having an infection,
He’s just that guy.
I love that this guy, even though all these being recorded from 2-3 year ago, they still replies to comments :)
