You can also get that shimmer by putting a small fan at one end, and adjust it so that the breeze it generates blows across the top of it, rather than directly at it. I have a tank which I'm running that way. I have and FX6 on my turtle's tank, and it keeps it sparkling clean, which is amazing since he's a bit boy and likes to dig. I rinse it out once a month, and replace some of the pads every six months, and yes, it stinks to heaven on high when I open it up, but the fact that the turtle tank doesn't smell is a testament to how well the ting works. I also have a tank which I built to replicate a mountain stream environment. On it, I run two FX8's with both intakes at one end and the outflows at the other. One of the tanks has filter media in it, and the other only has ceramic media in it. They both run full open to create the flow. I'm using the one which has only ceramic media in it mostly just to pump the water through faster. I have river cobbles placed in it to create the illusion of white water, with the usual pour overs, eddies, and slack water. My hillstream loaches just love it, and they readily breed in it. I also have Rainbow Shiners in it, which like hanging out in the slack water, and darting out from time to time to grab any food which comes washing down. I have lemon grass along the back of it to represent tussocks of grass which grow around mountain streams. I also have a little vals waving in the current. I have to be selective about what fish I put in it, because fish which come from slow moving water, or lake and ponds will not be able to deal with the flow. It's really fun watching the hillstream loaches run the rapids, and try to climb the aquarium glass where I have the spray bars pointed at the glass to create a waterfall of sorts. The best thing about it is that you really don't need to tilt the tank if you have a strong enough flow going. If it needs help, it's not hard to hide a power head concealed in the rocks of a pour over, once again keeping it cranked up to its maximum. I have yet to have a fish get sucked into the filter, or to have one get buffeted to strongly by the power heads. Again though, you have to be very selective about which fish you choose to put into it. It's also a good idea to put the rocks on sand bags, both to create the illusion of a slight drop, and to protect the bottom of the aquarium from scratches. You definitely would not want to use loose sand, as it would all wash away and end up at the intake end of the tank. If it were legal to keep trout and char, I'd put a few of their fry in. Perfect tank for it, but I don't have any desire to get in trouble. Your tank is looking fabulous! I don't know if I'd put the power head in or not. I can definitely see why you'd want to make more of that shimmer. I'd try the power head, and if it doesn't yield the results you want, then you can just take it out. Putting a small fan or two at one end just above the surface of the water and having it blow across with give a realistic look since it will be generating ripples in the same way as it does outdoors. Something like the small fans from a computer would probably do the job. If you keep it on a timer, you'll be able to emulate the stillness of the evening, night, and dawn. As always, I'll be eager to see what you come up with. You always come up with absolute beauty no matter what you do. I guess that's why I'm addicted to your channel.

The amount of shimmer is really nice. Perhaps leave it without the power head, unless it would increase the enrichment of the fish. At the end of the day it is your creation to enjoy so if you want to put a power head, go for it. Really a beautiful scape!

I would definitely recommend using an adjustable magnetic WaveMaker which can simulate the flow of a river and I use it on my Chaotic River Scape (220cm aquarium) ✨️🌿🐠🐟 Which will give you that shimmering effect, prevent waste from collecting and create gas exchange as well 💯

Definite vote for power head to ramp up the shimmer! The negative space is so conducive to highlighting the dynamics of shimmering light. Like your African Cichlid tanks. The fish are gonna love playing in the current and align with the direction of the flow.
Have you ever thought about recording a longer "fish stream" of one of your aquariums? Just leaving a camera there for like eight hours or how long you have the lights on? I love having things like that on in the background when I write, and I feel it might be a nice way of getting to know your aquariums and fish a bit better.
Amazing as always. Maybe in the future you could do a tank build for freshwater fire or peacock eels? I love them and I’d love to see what you could make for them.
I did the exact same thing in my 65 gal 4 ft tank, my canister output pushing around the back and then a separate internal filter basically as a power head for the front side. The fish seem to enjoy it.
So gorgeous. I could sit and just watch for hours. I wish I had more room for a much larger tank. I'll have to deal with my 37 community tank for now. Great job on this one!!

Hey MD for those background house plants I saw this great idea from a channel called KeepingFishSimple. He integrated egg crate light diffuser into his lid and stuck the stems of the house plants through the little holes it has.
MD, how about sturdy stem grasses, rushes, that sort of thing that grows by the river edges instead of the vines and monstera? A good grid system sounds good, you'd have to figure how to pop the plants in to stand, nothing massive, just dwarf grasses?
Love the build as usual! Would you ever consider doing a video comprised of footage from each of your tanks? Similar to the last two mins of this video just much longer. I like to watch when I'm working on homework and a video like that would be perfect! Keep up the great work MD
So many people get a large tank and go to large fish. But I like the looks of the small fish more you can have a lot more variety in quantities lso they can feel more comfortable. It gives a more natural vibe to the aquarium. The simmer gives it the appeal of overhead branches and leaves blocking the sun light and the wind action upon them. Looking forward to the other fish going in to this environment. Still hoping you get some glass catfish they are great in a large schools of ten to twenty. And they are so investing because the heads are black with long barbels and see through bodies with a visible black skelton. I have always enjoyed having them in my tanks. And the are peaceful and are mid to upper range fish, however will migrate to the lower range of the tank sometimes. I think if you get some you will appreciate their beauty. And in larger quantities a lot more interaction between them. Nevertheless this tank looks great and looking forward to its future beauty and growth of the plants as well as the fish. Good job aquascaping it.
I don’t know what that background music was during the filling of the co2 bottle, but I thought it was an ice cream truck outside, so there I go. Hauling ass down the stairs only to find out that there was not only no ice cream truck, but also the 87 year old man that has been asking me to play bridge with him for a month. So now, instead of eating a pleasant ice cream and watching the new MD video, I’m in a house that smells of moth balls and menthol cream playing bridge.
If you already own a powerhead pop it on in and do some side by side footage :) If not, it's quite beautiful as-is. When you released them it was a rainbow haha. Really cool shot.
(1) *Beautiful tank - love the two islands* (2) I like the *no powerhead* look (my preference); however if powerheads win please spend the extra money and get a second identical powerhead and set them up like the filter outlets so you get a full water cycle on both ends (with good powerheads you can control the outflow and lower the speed to whatever you want so things are not blown everywhere). (3) You have done so in previous tanks... with the small floating sticks *glue a small stone to the floating sticks to get them to sink.* (4) *Water Hyacinths* are larger, typically pond, floating plants with *beautiful blue-purple flowers* - which might suit your need for roots in the water (e.g., as to natural habitat - " native to the lowlands of South America, most notably the Amazon basin of Brazil, Venezuela, and Peru"). So, they are traditional Amazon plants. While they can get quite large; however, with your aquarium size, it is doable Water hyacinths can grow up to 1m (3ft) above the waterline with another 15cm (1ft) of roots lurking below the surface. With their size, they can either float, be restricted to float in specific areas with hidden rope or chord, and/or be tied to specific locations. (5) *Mosaic Plant (Ludwigia Sedioides)* should do fine in 24 inches of water (not sure how deep your tank is). While they make beautiful ornamental garden pond plants, they obstructed few created by your canopy will limit your view as ponds are top-down (not from the side), however, they will have direct exposure to air (floating) and provide surface shade. Natural Habitat: The Mosaic Plant is native to South America, specifically regions like Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. It typically thrives in freshwater habitats, such as slow-moving rivers, ponds, and marshes. In its natural habitat, it often grows in shallow water, with its stems and leaves floating on the surface.
I would love to see the powerhead! As you said, depending on how you install it, you could have areas with significant flow and others with basically none. In such a big tank it would be like an underwater gym for the big swimmers
Pretty please do a Channa Pulchra set up! They love planted tanks which suits you and they hate water changes which also suits you! You can keep a bunch until they pair off and I keep them and there’s not much on them UK based! You’ll be a legend if you do and get 1000 more followers 😂 I’ll eat my hat if you don’t!
Love it but at the moment the shimmer is going in two different directions so doesn’t look like a river flowing right to left (based on wood placement)

You should definitely do a long video of close up shots of the tank for relaxation viewing. Like an hour of just sat in diff spots for ~15 mins

I had to rewind this to see the first fish drop multiple time. That tetra drop was magical. Those colours pop!

The Killifish need some floating plants. They like to stay near surface of water but will be more comfortable with cover there.

There are some echinodorus species, e.g. Parviflorus, Horemanii, Martii, that grow very tall and would look cool breaking through the surface
You could get a bunch of egg crate light diffuser and put it across the top in the back to poke houseplants through!
Keeping fish simple just did a scape where he used that for the lid for the purpose of inserting houseplants

And they are so investing because the heads are black with long barbels and see through bodies with a visible black skelton. I have always enjoyed having them in my tanks. And the are peaceful and are mid to upper range fish, however will migrate to the lower range of the tank sometimes. I think if you get some you will appreciate their beauty. And in larger quantities a lot more interaction between them.
Nevertheless this tank looks great and looking forward to its future beauty and growth of the plants as well as the fish. Good job aquascaping it.

Don’t be afraid to use more flow. Even Angels and Discus often live in strong flow in nature unlike what some people may say.
No power head looks good with the filter outlet
I don’t know what that background music was during the filling of the co2 bottle, but I thought it was an ice cream truck outside, so there I go. Hauling ass down the stairs only to find out that there was not only no ice cream truck, but also the 87 year old man that has been asking me to play bridge with him for a month. So now, instead of eating a pleasant ice cream and watching the new MD video, I’m in a house that smells of moth balls and menthol cream playing bridge.
If you already own a powerhead pop it on in and do some side by side footage :) If not, it's quite beautiful as-is. When you released them it was a rainbow haha. Really cool shot.

(1) *Beautiful tank - love the two islands*
(2) I like the *no powerhead* look (my preference); however if powerheads win please spend the extra money and get a second identical powerhead and set them up like the filter outlets so you get a full water cycle on both ends (with good powerheads you can control the outflow and lower the speed to whatever you want so things are not blown everywhere).
(3) You have done so in previous tanks... with the small floating sticks *glue a small stone to the floating sticks to get them to sink.*
(4) *Water Hyacinths* are larger, typically pond, floating plants with *beautiful blue-purple flowers* - which might suit your need for roots in the water (e.g., as to natural habitat - " native to the lowlands of South America, most notably the Amazon basin of Brazil, Venezuela, and Peru"). So, they are traditional Amazon plants. While they can get quite large; however, with your aquarium size, it is doable Water hyacinths can grow up to 1m (3ft) above the waterline with another 15cm (1ft) of roots lurking below the surface. With their size, they can either float, be restricted to float in specific areas with hidden rope or chord, and/or be tied to specific locations.
(5) *Mosaic Plant (Ludwigia Sedioides)* should do fine in 24 inches of water (not sure how deep your tank is). While they make beautiful ornamental garden pond plants, they obstructed few created by your canopy will limit your view as ponds are top-down (not from the side), however, they will have direct exposure to air (floating) and provide surface shade. Natural Habitat: The Mosaic Plant is native to South America, specifically regions like Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. It typically thrives in freshwater habitats, such as slow-moving rivers, ponds, and marshes. In its natural habitat, it often grows in shallow water, with its stems and leaves floating on the surface.
Another vote here for the powerhead. As others have said, I've also noticed that many little fish like to play in and around Flow.

I would love to see the powerhead! As you said, depending on how you install it, you could have areas with significant flow and others with basically none. In such a big tank it would be like an underwater gym for the big swimmers

Pretty please do a Channa Pulchra set up! They love planted tanks which suits you and they hate water changes which also suits you! You can keep a bunch until they pair off and I keep them and there’s not much on them UK based! You’ll be a legend if you do and get 1000 more followers 😂 I’ll eat my hat if you don’t!

I'd do a spray bar angled up towards the surface at an angle. You'll get good flow and shimmer without blowing the fish around.
You can get a spray bar for the FX6 that should give you the shimmer effect if you have the spray right at the water line
Love it but at the moment the shimmer is going in two different directions so doesn’t look like a river flowing right to left (based on wood placement)
I use egg crating ,used to difuse overhead lights, i use it on th back wall to grow my epiphites and the roots from my house plants as well
