“I’d like to talk about crowdfunding. Just kidding, here’s 12 more secret books.”
12? That's just absurd. It'd be 16. Obviously.
Have you seen "Brandon Sanderson Announces 120 more secret novels"? Hilarious video
I'm only 90% sure this is a joke.
I hate you. I was actually expecting more BRANDO BOOKS.

I don’t want to be a bother, but are we still expecting a video tour of the Sanderson secret lair?
It’s ok if not, but I’ve been eagerly waiting :)

The transparancy behind Brandon and his team is why I will continue to advocate for everything he does and continue to be a patron for his work, bravo sir! May you be a beacon of what it means to an advocate and example of what it means to be an artist and content creator moving forward. Prase be to yourself and your team and as always... Life before Death. Strength before Weakness. Journey before Destination.
Content Creator is one of the worst fucking things I have ever heard someone call someone else
@@shiven513I agree
It’s why I don’t have a problem buying multiple copies of his book
Transparent... Except for all those Secret Projects!😂
Crowdfunding is not always about the Funds, but about the Crowd! It gives a way for a company to engage with their community in a fun, transparent and structured way.
And expensive
Exactly. Some organizations need to learn that bureaucracy is not the same a structure.
And how is that different from your own web portal? A discord server? Twitter? Live feeds? Facebook? IG? Brandon doesn’t need to crowd fund… preorders on his dragon steel platform would work equally well without having to pay hefty fees in service!
Something about bearded Brandon with a brown blazer on a leather couch is just so comforting
He looks so professorial
The difference between pre-ordering say video games now a days and Sanderson's work is we have not been tarnished with Sanderson's work. His case makes it entirely appropriate to crowd-fund/pre-order. He deserves the trust he's given by his audience.
Exactly! With video games, I've always had the mentality that I would never pre-order a game unless I knew for a certainty it was going to be good. Which is very rare these days unfortunately. But for instance, if a Mario Odyssey 2 was going to be released by Nintendo. And my pre-ordering of it actually had a benefit. Then I would pre-order for that scenario. But if Bethesda says next week that they're going to come out with Fallout 5, I'd wait until release, look at a bunch of review, gameplay, the whole shebang. Because they don't have my confidence.
Sanderson does.
0:10: "The kind of original spirit for crowdfunding campaigns was people who couldn't afford to print the things or make the things, getting money up-front to make it."
I remember those days. They didn't last long, though. I was talking with a friend of mine who's run multiple successful Kickstarters and he said that there are just so many projects out there now that it's impossible for "the little guy" to have any hope of success anymore. If you don't have a sizeable advertising budget, people are just not going to find your Kickstarter in any real numbers no matter how good the project is.
basically, crowdfunding got "gentrified." The money people swooped in and took it over from those who truly need it.
@@spaceknight793the downside of supporting those who truly need it is that many of them aren't able to deliver due to their inexperience making them unable to accurately gauge a project's viability.
Honestly I love the idea behind crowd-funding just as a principle. Consumers should be in charge of choosing and supporting projects/creators they like, not some random exec who only sees the product as a spreadsheet that might make the company money. This is awesome
I want express how good this style fits on you Brandon.
The glow up is real.
It's also a great "free" marketing tool, especially if you don't need the money.
You set a goal you know you will hit in under 24h, and watch all the media outlets jump on the story about how this project was crowdfunded in 24h. It gets shared around by your core audience, then the casual audience hears about it, which snowballs into the mainstream audience being curious and wondering what the fuss is all about (in the best case scenario)
that's pretty close to a scam
@@leogtt1627 a scam is only when the premise of the kickstarter isn’t fulfilled, which reminds me of the air umbrella kickstarter campaign
I don't care why or what you crowdfund. You are a very talented writer and I thoroughly enjoy almost all of your books. I am an audio book junkie and your books feed my addiction.
So keep up the good work!
How long until they crowdfund their interstellar, generation ship?
HAHAH IS this a reference to the expanse?
Moroni!
Hell yes! As somebody who backed the full Year of Sanderson, it was So much fun!
We should crowdfund an animated mistborn film. There's surely enough fans to do so. Especially since hollywood is stupid
I'd prefer stormlight, but you know
@@BlackHand531 stormlight would work great as a longform television series imo and that would require more money up front. I'd prefer stormlight as well, but realistically that probably won't be the first cosmere story to be adapted, but you never know :)
Yeah, follow in the steps of critical role with Legend of Vox Machina. Highly recommended if you haven't watched it
Sora!
He’s spoken about this in the past. Because he wants more than just Mistborn to be funded, he would rather build strong relationships with Hollywood through Mistborn (which will hopefully make getting other projects greenlit easier) than ask fans for their money every time they want to make a movie/show
I don't check my email daily or even weekly anymore. Following up months later about the shipping is truly annoying because I usually don't catch those emails until much later.
But I agree about every other thing pointed out.
I always wanted to know how much extra are ordered to cover ones that are damaged or lost.
Have you considered a layaway option for people in Europe so that we can spread the cost if the shipping is going to be so expensive? Michael J Sullivan did it through backerkit for his Riyria Revelations books.
I think he talked a little about the shipping in a video last week, but I’m not sure if this specifically was addressed
I find something funny about "why crowdfunding" as the title and the thumbnail just shows an absolutely outrageous sum of money.
For limit run items crowd sourcing makes total sense especially the admin side
Thank you Brandon for creating the Cosmere ❤
Will we get to know the tiers and prices before it goes live?
I'd like to get the leatherbounds, the "prime" (Dragonsteel?), but not any swag. Just books.
Will it be possible?
Dont ever trust anyone on internet. But if I was going to break that rule, Brandon would be top of the list on people who I would say will deliver on what he says. He has a proven track record of delivering, often more than what was promised, to fans. I hope Dragonsteel continues to grow and I love and support anyone taking on big publishing. However, the last kickstarter they also sold to some bigger publishers and, if i remember right, some of the kickstarter supporters were receiving their books about the same time the third party published books were coming out. I thought this was kind of a money grab and defeated the purpose of a kickstarter if your just going to do the normal publishing thing along side of it.
Communication level 100000
Still very expensive in a crumbling USA economy. Sadly I can not afford it for my partner who loves your books. I am happy though that you have such a loving and yes, intense community that do support this. Best of luck to all. May the world stop burning and the radiance break through for all.
Hey Brandon! I bought mistborn leatherbound! It is amazing. I usually read on digital and I was wondering if you are willing to make a digital premium version: an EPUB with all the swag (images and such) that are present in leather abound edition!
It's gun for us as a community as well. It's sort of an event, the way waiting in line for a movie used to be.
2:01 We chose?
Is Tor Publishing still accepting works from Prospective Authors? Asking for a friend who would like to publish a fantasy novel, and he's not sure if they are still accepting since COVID happened.
I like when he says "swag"
Crowdfunding is the only way to bring out B money. Something none of us knew we needed
I wish you'd disclose prices and tiers a month or so before going live with the crowdfunding
tbf its probably extremely similar to the WoK kickstarter tiers
I am curious what the benefit it for that. Crowdfunding campaigns usually last atleast 30 days. That should be more than enough time for someone to decide if they want to or are able to support it.
@@dericplummer9272 because most of the tiers like signed books will be limited/more expensive and you have to be fast

Great info. I've been looking into crowdfunding my novel as well and have been looking for a great printer... hopefully in the USA.
I wonder if Odium crowdfunds
cool to hear!will look into them for future projects
I haven't participated in on of these before. Is there a tier for people who aren't interested in the book but who would like the schwag?
So I’m mostly making an education guess based on past Kickstarters here, but in the past there’s been a ‘back without reward’ tier where you can fling as little money as you like at the project (so $1 is an option) and can then add swag on as an extra.
Yes, there will absolutely be ways to get whichever swag you want without getting any books.
Source: I’ve participated in every Kickstarter Dragonsteel has done so far and all of them have had methods for that. (and they have indicated across several mediums that this one will include similar, if not more, options)
Assuming Dragonsteel follows a similar tier structure as what they’ve done with previous projects, yes.
There’s usually a $1 tier for those who want to pick and choose the different stuff you may want as “add-ons”.
Cause FOMO marketing is best marketing. (even if you super duper fingers crossed promise it's not FOMO marketing)
Will we see a full Brando gandalf in December?
It is time for Brandalf.
I will have to disagree just a little bit about backerkit....I did the Storm light miniatures campaign which was handled by backerkit and still haven't received the missing items from my purchase
😮😮😮
Do you think massive projects like this make it harder for smaller businesses that need the crowd funding to succeed at all?
Big publishers and authors absolutely overcrowd and dilute a space originally intended for independent creators.
Soo what about our live action news?
thumnail is funny as hell
Enough talk Brandon, just take all my money, i am ok with it. For me it's already gone from the moment the kickstarter was announced.
WoR is subleme.
I see Brandon has achieved his final form
Serious question: How much of the crowd funded money ends up tithed to the Mormon church?
👍🏻
Did he say swag?
What is that black thing on the white blanket?
wow, glorious beard
The beard looks better and you're losing weight, good for you!
"Oh, and uh, the money."
And how is that different from your own web portal? A discord server? Twitter? Live feeds? Facebook? IG? Brandon doesn’t need to crowd fund… preorders on his dragon steel platform would work equally well without having to pay hefty fees in service!
Why? You’d be paying so much in service fee. Why not just do your own pre-order web site. 41,000,000 with 100,000 backers is $458,000 + 3% transaction fee…
backerkit work?
Crowdfunding also shows smaller authors that it’s possible and they don’t need to go through a publisher for their printing.
Looks like Brandon has been losing weight? If so, great job!
He better be he needs to keep working for a long time
"Why do we continue to crowdfund? Because I like money and don't want publishers getting a cut." It's okay to admit the truth, Brandon.
But he's still using publishers, these are mainly special editions which publishers are not much fan of doing. Then there's the merchandising.
Crowdfund a mistborn movie!
I have no money, and I must back.
Another reason for Crowdfunding is more money :)
I'll never financially recover from this.
Just putting it out there. Broken Lizard. Super troopers 2. Entirely Crowd funded
🤑🤑🤑
Why crowdfunding? Brandon’s got 41 million reasons why.
Why is the most obvious reason ‘we made stupid amounts of money and then got to sell everything again so made more money’ not reason number 1?

You are one of if not the largest name in fantasy right now, you HAVE a publisher that would take anything you throw at them. You using crowdfunding just feels like you bullying those smaller creators out of the space meant for them when you simply dont need it.
Except people backing Brandon's campaigns, doesn't mean they are taking that away from smaller campaigns. If anything, having big campaigns from big names can also drive traffic to smaller campaigns by people that wouldn't have went to the website otherwise.
Publishers aren't interested in doing the super expensive leatherbounds, that's a niche audience they pretty much need to print to demand because they're so expensive to produce they can't over-print by much... and having the middleman of retail would skyrocket their price to the point no one would buy them. Directly from Brandon is the only realistic way to get the leatherbounds done at the quality level and price point they have.
And having a big draw gets people to the website in the first place, at which point they might see "other things you might be interested in" that they never would have otherwise. How often do you randomly stop by kickstarter when you weren't sent there by something you were already interested in?
Fanboy logic. Justify the money grab. The are plenty of pleather bound books for sale from publishers.
Did you read the last turds that he crowd funded? They were awful. I find it hard to believe he wrote those, they were 3rd grade reading level at Best.. I trusted the first ones... And $60 for four 6hr audio book with no character to them, the short stories had characters the you never connect with, the kid who was a rat, and his girl friend.. was anyone surprised with that ending? Even the magic scheme was uninteresting.
The last crowd funding was a money grab, and hey if he needed money to get through the pandemic and get the 5th storm light book out, fine.. but instead we got 5 short stories in the spaceship book for kids series.
The problem is and Brandon pay attention. You need to collect yourself, your spread too thin, you've been smelling your own farts and yelling yourself they smell great. The prime series... There's a reason they aren't canon... You rewrote them for a reason. Let them go to the land of unpublished books. WOT does not need a reboot, Jordan wife asked you to finish the series, so why is Amazon version nothing like the books, don't fix what's not broken. It's insulting, and arrogant of you to think you can do a better job with the wot then the Creator of the wot.
If your going to do alamancy TV show. Finish your other projects first so you can focus. Being so scattered writing 4 books, and publishing the turds known as prime, crowd funding the junk your publisher won't touch, and re writing WOT for Amazon... Let's say it isn't a good look... I was a huge fan, I've read everything you put out to date.. and I have to say the last 3 years your quality has dropped too far.
You went from writing good stories and charging for your good completed product. To writing for the paycheck, stack it high, and sell it low, quantity over quality. It's going to start to hurt your sales. Once your fan boys read dune if your older stuff and remember what a good book is like and then they get their crowd funded turds, your gonna have a problem selling anything, and the storm light archives book 5, I have a bad feeling about this book. You know why people liked words of radiance so much? Because it was one of the last books you did that was genuinely good, oathkeeper was good, but not words of radiance good, and rhythm of war. You started to slip and got lazy on kaliden chapters. Go back to doing what you were doing before. I won't be paying your bills anymore, at least not until you put out something worth reading. As far as I'm concerned, you still owe me 4 books from the last crowd funding... Cuz those shouldn't even have your name on them.. picking the 4 best stories from a group of 3rd graders isn't quality writing.
I hope you figure out how to get back to where you were. Open a window, light a match. Write quality, not quantity.
So to say it another way, You are able to eliminate the risks of operating a normal business by taking customer money upfront with no set date nor even a guarantee of delivery. Yeah smart guy, every business would like to put all of the risk of running a business onto the customer.
This is just like the story of him selling his grandpas corn. The man has no idea of ethical business practices.
???
What story of selling his grandpa's corn?? Brandon has never talked about that, I don't think
He's not some nobody scammer trying to steal people's money on Kickstarter. He's successfully run the largest Kickstarter campaign in history, delivering a novel to people every 4 months. I've had kickstarters take literal years to fulfill.
@@borealwood It was on intentionally blank. He told a story about selling his grandpas corn for a 1.50 or something like that. He said he realized he could raise the price 50 cents and still sell the same amount. His grandpa found out and got mad.
From the haha way the story was told it was pretty clear that he didn't even consider the moral implication of raising the price of food just because you can. No judgement on teenage Brandon who sold the corn he was a kid, but fifty year old Brandon telling the story with a complete lack of awareness threw me a little.
@@RobinClower I agree that it is lower risk that other kickstarters. That is one of the reasons why it makes more sense for him and his company to assume the risk for the product launch. The main reason why they should assume the risk is because they are taking all of the profits.
This isn't some amateur with a dream and few resources. He and his company can afford to take on all of the risk. They will be taking all of the profits after all.
Yes they take all the profit, and I'm not mad about that. The reasons are simple, he's producing a product that I want. I know I will get it. He reinvests a great deal of the profit back into the company and the Dragonsteel team (who are second to none by the way) to be able to better serve US. The loyal fanbase that enables him to keep writing like an AI. So essentially, this plan is ideal for us and them both as we all benefit greatly. The quality of the product we consistently receive keeps us coming back for more, but for that, Dragonsteel would be a slave to the few big guys left.
Doesn't make sense but ok 😂
I’ve quoted for a software company for equivalent ordering systems before, and it would cost approx $300k-$500k to build their own system and there’s no way it would be as good as backerkit
He has a publisher! The system is built. This is how he pushes the junk the publisher wouldn't publish. Or re releases his good books in a different format. At an exaggerated price. Crowd funding makes sense. If you have a book your publisher made you rewrite like day the prime series, well now you can sell the junk the publisher won't take also and take advantage of your fan base while it lasts, collect as much money as you can in hopes that you collect enough to live on once your fans won't buy any more junk.
Please rewrite Rhythms of Bore, Make Stormlight Great Again!
