My Mother was Patty Andrews. (Of The Andrews Sisters) She did the original recording of this song in 1949, brought it to #1, and it became her only solo gold record without her sisters. I'm looking at that gold record right now, and listening to Karen sing it. That is how amazing I think Karen Carpenter is.
Yes dear your mom most definitely did. I admired your mom and your sisters. They gave us clean memorable music. Yes Karen does a fine job but your mom owns this song.
+Pam DuBois Have been totally in love with Patty forever. What a voice/singer. Carpenter does as fabulous job with this song, as did whoever wrote the arrangement. Love the fact that she sings the intro -- all too rarely done.
+Pam DuBois You have great ears Pam. As a big fan of Judy, Ella, Frank, and Vikki Carr, I enjoy Karen's singing equally. The Carpenters image and genre of music still seems to bother people, and if they only close their eyes and listen, they will find a beautiful treasure in Karen's voice. No one before her or since comes close to sounding like her.
I was given the album, "Horizon", for my birthday back in 1976. It had 2-3 pop hits that were good but some of the so called filler material was even better. IMO, this is the most beautiful ballad they ever recorded. The nostalgic orchestration (thanks to their collaboration with the great Billy May), vintage chorus, and torch song feel are simply magical. The Andrews sisters were legends and American icons. Not just anybody could do this song with such flawless excellence as Karen did.
The depth her voice and the perfect clarity is unmatched...best version I've heard and there are a lot of great covers of this. RIP Karen you were a legend!!
I've listened to this recording for many years but never realized how many people have been mesmerized by Karen's beautiful voice. I can just imagine how many other masterpieces she would have created if she had lived a full life. Sometimes dying so young makes a person a legend (like Marilyn) but Karen was one when she recorded for the first time. The sadness in this song tears your heart out. Thank you beautiful lady for the memories!
This is a devastatingly beautiful and heartbreaking song that it always brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear Karen sing this. Undoubtedly my favorite of all Karen's songs although I love all her songs. No other singer can sing this song with such anguish, longing and pain. I feel like I want to tell Karen, yes you can dream and everything will be alright.
+Brih Mendiola You say it brings tears to your eyes Brith. Well your heartfelt sincere reaction to this song brings tears to my eyes.. Yes everything turns out alright in the end, you just have to have a vision of the bigger picture.
Yeah I'd love to tell her the same thing. When I feel the tears coming (because of the way she sang this great song) I think of The Carpenters 1st t.v. special where she has a long wig and feathered coat on.She sings part of this song then takes off the coat and says " It's only me.Besides you don't need feathers when you introduce a guy like John Denver."Haaa!!! That line comes to mind when I hear Karen sing this song. She could make us laugh, cry and smile.Really miss her.
A song that proves she could have been a great jazz singer had she lived. This song shows her beautiful and smooth bass quality on the bottom range all the way to her clear angelic highs. A range very few(if any)singer can produce today.
Richard & Karen came out with a lot of great stuff, but for me, I love this song much more than any other - even if it wasn't written by them. (It was written by Sammy Fain in 1938). The way Karen sings this song is like warm caramel dripping over chocolate. BEAUTIFUL!
Voice of an Angel, Eyes of God. The most Angelic & beautiful person I have ever seen. Richard as always with great arraging- no one compares to his talent. Your right Rich a marvolous soul Karen was. The Best female vocalist of all time without a doubt!
This song was originally recorded beautifully by The Andrews Sisters, Patty doing the solo with the Laverne and Maxene coming in at the end. This is beautiful too .and Barbra Streisand Has an Incredible voice ! It's really O.K to like all of these things without comparing or putting down other artists!
Beautiful tune from the end of 30's. I have loved it since 1975, when I was a 16 year old boy. I t is extremely romantic and glamorous. In her tender voice the music is velvet and silk. Thanks for the pleasure you gave to me. I love Lady GAGA but I will never forget Karen Carpenter. Antonio Augusto from Brazil
What a gorgeous voice! Clear as a bell...and perfect pitch. Although I love many of her songs, I wish that she had sung more classic standards, such as this. So tragic that she died at such a young age.
You are right. And the reason is simple: the tonalities of hi and low, are unique and unmatched by any other female singer in history. The background voices have the stlye of the times, and of course the fantastic musicalization makes this song a masterpiece.
If you watch The Carpenters 1st t.v. special she sings a few lines of this song wearing a long wig and feathered coat.Ha!! It's a comedy bit but Karen sings the song seriously then takes off the coat and says "It's only me"( she was introducing John Denver.).
I always will be mad at Karen. I feel still so sorry because her early lost. But wherever you are, know this: you never will be forget! But no discussion at all: her voice was a gift that it has no parallel and with softness she reached the top the world that an artist can reach: an unmatched place in our memories.
An interesting fact about this recording is that the background vocals were not sung by Karen and Richard (as they are on nearly every, but not all, Carpenter records). Jackie Ward, John Bahler, Tom Bahler and Ron Hicklin are performing them. This quartet is also the actual vocal group on all of the Partridge Family records, backing David Cassidy. I've read that Richard felt that they would add a unique and nostalgic quality to the sound of the recording. He was right!
Proof positive that Karen could sing th 'ballads' from the 'Big Band' days pst - she'd of done a remarkable job of performing the 'Standards' - thanks so much for posting this - it 'tugs' at my heartstrings!
So hard to believe she left us over 30 years ago but her voice is timeless and eternal. Along with this rendition, Timi Yuro's interpretation, produced by Quincy Jones, from the mid-60's are the best version of this song that I've been seduced by 💞
Robert, I did watch this again and again. I'm very familiar with this song but, never liked it until Karen. Now, and have been for many years have played this on piano and organ. iIt has become a signature ballad for me. When the lyrics, drunk with mine are spoke, I change key and go up three half steps. Very dramatic and unexpected. Your video coincides with her performance beautifully. Still haven't cried yet, but I'm working on it. Thank you, Jerry

@mbblover Boy, do I ever agree with you. Karen was born to sing the standards, in my opinion. She was a torch singer, a throwback to The Big Band Era. Of course, she could sing any other genre and style at a high level, too. Simply the best.
@mbblover This was the one track from Horizon I would never listen to. But you know, in the 70's albums were so expensive and I had just a few. Then one day I gave it a chance and fell in love with it. Karen's interpretation and pronunciation - yeah, for I was starting to learn English at the time. Nowadays, I don't have any prejudice against music from any age whatsoever.

Always thought it a terrible injustice that Karen Carpenter did not have the chance to record one or more standards albums. If you hunt around, though, and if you're a bit liberal about your definition of a standard, there's actually enough of that style among Carpenters recordings to assemble one such album. I cobbled together a cassette that way years ago. It includes Leon Russell's "This Masquerade", which is more recently-written than most big band pieces, and also two genuinely old songs--"When I Fall In Love" (1950) and "Little Girl Blue" (ca.1939)--that were recorded for one of their TV specials in the 70s. Also, there are two versions of the 1920s-era "From This Moment On", one studio and the other live, in both of which the Cole Porter tune is set amid Bach's Prelude #1 from The Well-Tempered Clavier! But "I Can Dream, Can't I" utterly bowled me over when I first heard it on Horizon (note that it's actually the album's title track, BTW), and still does. Wish I could get the ear of Richard Carpenter and suggest such a compilation of standards be issued for real...perhaps with the addition of some of his own sumptuous piano work and orchestration on some period instrumentals...and even a Chet Bakeresque vocal or two of his own...
Yes! I have all of the songs you mentioned on a Playlist that I listen to daily.I'm so glad they recorded such classics. At times I almost rather hear Karen sing the really old songs because she just raised those greats to another level with her mind blowing voice.

@No1KCfan6 Do you mean pitch, or volume? I assume pitch. To me, the most endearing, and at times spine chilling vocals are when Karen sings low. In fact, in my view, her best vocals were behind her after the Horizon album (save for Ave Maria). I prefer songs such as Crescent Noon, & most anything from Offering/Ticket to Ride in terms of vocal tone. Her voice was much lighter/higher on the last few albums.
@greenwich1754 i mean volume. i adore the deep part of karen's voice. however, some of her early work, especially "crescent noon" is a little *too* deep for me. Some of her vocal performances that are among my favorites include "merry christmas, darling" (and much of their christmas music, actually; her voice seems especially warm), "rainy days and mondays," "top of the world," "for all we know," "a song for you," "eventide," "solitaire," "one love," and more.
omg can you imagine CD after CD with karen singing the classic pop melodies of the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's 70's and 80's! move over rod stewart (LOL!) being released now. wow and double wow! seems its' been the thing from stewart to tom jones to streisand and others putting out these type of cd's in the past few years. @edwardjames50 Yes, I did emphasize the word "those", but how else is one to interpret your comment to mbblover "so don't lump her in with the rest of those people"? "Those people" automatically implies a condescending attitude to anyone who associates a vocal caliber to that of Streisand. As to Barbara vs Barbra, yes, I screwed that one up - I thought most people with that name spell it "Barbara", but obviously not.
Cierto o no? Por ende, la Musica en su vertiente comercial DEJO DE EXISITIR! Pobre de nuestros hijos, verdad?
Streisand??? Great voice, great actress, great stage persona, but strictly speaking, as a songstress. . . she was/is awful. She mutilated every classic song she sang. Karen C is brilliant.
@mbblover ~ Oh, please, Streisand has been recording the standards from the beginning of her career, fifty years ago, so don't lump her in with the rest of those people.
Karen sang this slow and mello song so well. She is my all -time favorite.

Love this, Thank You. Never forgot, when found out Karen had passed. A Sad day that was..

Nostalgie de la musique des années '40 ! La voix de Karen est de toutes les époques ! C'est MAGNIFIQUE !!! Mon père adorerait !!!!!

Annie does a brilliant job of this magnificent song, so please enjoy

I fell in love with her the first time I heard "Close To You", back in '70....I'm still bewitched.
i got goose bumps as soon as the song started, she really had it. i hope she realized how much happiness she brought to her listeners.
One of the best vocals Karen ever recorded. Beautiful and Haunting.
A song that proves she could have been a great jazz singer had she lived. This song shows her beautiful and smooth bass quality on the bottom range all the way to her clear angelic highs. A range very few(if any)singer can produce today.
昔懐かしい風情を出してのカレンの歌声ですね。この良いムードに包まれた歌を聴くのも、人を良い気持ちにさせますね。カレンのこの低音の拡がりが素晴らしく、思わず引き込まれそうになりますね。
Best voice ever!!!! My favorite song!
Richard & Karen came out with a lot of great stuff, but for me, I love this song much more than any other - even if it wasn't written by them. (It was written by Sammy Fain in 1938). The way Karen sings this song is like warm caramel dripping over chocolate. BEAUTIFUL!
Carpenters的歌曲永遠這麼動聽,百聽不厭
感謝這裡分享的你(妳) :)
My favorite Carpenters song together with Close to You and We've Only Just Begun . Hearing Karen's voice can be so relaxing.
Voice of an Angel, Eyes of God. The most Angelic & beautiful person I have ever seen. Richard as always with great arraging- no one compares to his talent. Your right Rich a marvolous soul Karen was. The Best female vocalist of all time without a doubt!
Karen did an absolutely beautiful version of this song...never heard it sung this well..

This is beautiful too .and Barbra Streisand Has an Incredible voice ! It's really O.K to like all of these things without comparing or putting down other artists!
Nobody does this song like Patty Andrews does!❤🙌👏
This whole album from start to finish IMO their best work.

Timeless perfection never matched ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️! A heavenly gift taken way to soon . 😥😥😥
Very nicely made. Thank you 🌷
Karen Anne was an angel sent straight from heaven 💞🌹💖
Karen, simply the best ! I miss you Karem Carpenter !
FLAWLESS
Such beauty makes everything right with the world for a moment
What a gorgeous voice! Clear as a bell...and perfect pitch. Although I love many of her songs, I wish that she had sung more classic standards, such as this. So tragic that she died at such a young age.
i loved her i wish she was still here
The first time I heard Close To You on the radio in 1970 I fell in love with her. Have been ever since.
This song is a dream, just like her voice that you don't want to wake up from. 😴
In this song Karen explored the full potential of your amazing voice. I can't listen to it without crying.
You are right. And the reason is simple: the tonalities of hi and low, are unique and unmatched by any other female singer in history. The background voices have the stlye of the times, and of course the fantastic musicalization makes this song a masterpiece.
No words to define this. Simply wonderful.
I just love this song it is a pity she is not here to sing it live.
If you watch The Carpenters 1st t.v. special she sings a few lines of this song wearing a long wig and feathered coat.Ha!! It's a comedy bit but Karen sings the song seriously then takes off the coat and says "It's only me"( she was introducing John Denver.).
Amazing quality, sound and video. One of my favorites, then most all of them are. Thank you for uploading this. It's in my playlist.
Yes in my Playlist to!! Karen mastered this song!
I always will be mad at Karen. I feel still so sorry because her early lost. But wherever you are, know this: you never will be forget!
But no discussion at all: her voice was a gift that it has no parallel and with softness she reached the top the world that an artist can reach: an unmatched place in our memories.
Nobody can sing this music like Caren , i like very much your mother Pam, but Caren is superb .
excellent.
This great voice fell forever silent thirty years ago today, February 4, 1983.
That is, of course, thirty-one years!
SO sad, and so unnecessary!😥😭

How utterly, freakin' fabulous this is. What are the other classic songs that she did???? Anyone????
absolutely beautiful, Karen is so missed. never heard her sing this one, thank you so much for sharing!!!
I never tire of listening to Karen.
classics live on and on
Qué bellezaaaa,por Dioooossss!!!!!!!!!!!!!...Gracias amigo por subirlo...Hey Karen:te extrañamossss!!!!!!!!!!!!...Abrazo. Germán.

Dolcissima Karen. Grazie nero
This is so smooth...
@mbblover I couldn't agree more. She'd be queen of the classics hands down.
Robert, I did watch this again and again. I'm very familiar with this song but, never liked it until Karen. Sonnet 18
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
(…)
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest,
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Well said, Willie
Lindissima canção muito antiga e bem reinterpretada!
❤️
@mbblover Boy, do I ever agree with you. Karen was born to sing the standards, in my opinion. She was a torch singer, a throwback to The Big Band Era. Of course, she could sing any other genre and style at a high level, too. Simply the best.
en 15 ans de carrière Karen est devenue la plus grande chanteuse de la chanson...in the world .
Time to dream...🌘❤️🎶
She made Patty proud.
Nice video. Thanks for posting it.
3:08 OMG! This duet is simply fantastic! Karen & Richard?
@mbblover This was the one track from Horizon I would never listen to. But you know, in the 70's albums were so expensive and I had just a few. This song is awesome and the Karen's voice is... is... (I have no words).
I always dreamed I would marry Karen. Or at least her songs; her voice.
Driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles I was listening to the radio and heard the news: she had died.
With tears in my eyes I had to pull over and cry. My dream had died.
My dream is still dead and I still cry when I see her face and hear her voice.
Karen, I love you.
Sure! You are right, cause you are all reasons of the world !
IF she had done like Carly Simon, IE, had recorded a Torch album, she would have sold a billion copies. I Can Dream, Can't I? and Little Altar Boy are two examples of what she could do to US.
I feel that I have lost the love of my life xxx
Who cares about the ins and outs of who did what and when? We have Karens beautiful voice still to listen to.!
i can dream..can't I....
I used to ask Santa to leave Karen in my Xmas stocking but it never happened !
This happened to me, two years ago I got the Carpenters album, the one Richard did with the Royal Philharmonic.
The best cover of the fantastic original (1949) Pto68TqHxKg
1:50 She was so cute... :(
Yes you can, of course you can.
Karen had a velvet voice...

@greenwich1754 i don't like karen's voice in her later years, i.e., her solo work. she sings with absolutely no depth in her voice.
pretty song, but she should have kept her voice up a little.
